If you have time, could you give us some examples of the interesting deployment
options?
Apart from the "embedded" DS8K you've mentioned.

Thank you!

I assume Enzo's point is that IBM hasn't offered a physical model mainframe in
less than a single frame form factor for many, many years. Until now. Prior to
the IBM z16 AGZ (and LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 AGL) the physically smallest
mainframe required a whole rack footprint, a rack that IBM supplied. Now it
doesn't; the physical dimensions are much smaller.

There was some significant progress in recent years to pave the way for these
rack mount models. One big change was between the IBM z13s/LinuxONE Rockhopper
I and the IBM z14 ZR1/LinuxONE Rockhopper II. In that model cycle IBM reduced
the frame size significantly, converging on the industry standard 19 inch rack
size. And those models (and the IBM z15/LinuxONE III LT2) also have some
optional internal mounting space for a few use cases. As a notable example, you
can equip those models with internal ECKD storage (IBM DS8910F).

But I agree with Enzo that these new rack mount models available in most
countries are attractive. They open up some interesting new deployment options.

Re: IBM z16 Model A02 Announcement

2023-04-15 Thread Radoslaw Skorupka

IMHO "back again" is not correct.
We have tenth generation of BC aka T02 aka A02 aka 800 machine
(z800-z890...z15T02-z16A02). Before z we had MP 3000. Before that we
had  MP 2000. But before that we had ES/9000 9221 and before that we had
"S370 compatible" 9370. That's over 30 years of small machines
existence. Not to mention model 20 of S/360 :-)
Of course every new generation is somehow better than old one. A big
change was with z800, which was "full featured small size" machine - you
could have everything as in z900, but not so much. That include OSA,
sysplex links, crypto HW, FICON, etc.

When we were looking at a DS8k, it was cheaper to buy it in the rack vs.
buying the model you could install into the gap in the new z 19-inch
rack CPU. I wonder if the same will be true for the z16?

The 19" racks sure look a lot nicer in a datacenter.  I was at one a few
weeks ago with nice neat lines of 19" racks heading off to the horizon,
but in the middle a few z14's were poking their big doors out into the
aisle.  One z14 was then replaced with a z16, which unfortunately left a
hole.  But hey, that can now be used as a shortcut between the long aisles.

But isn’t it the first time IBM is advertising “you can put it in

use the one from IBM that came with the system.
