Last Gasp For Hard Disk Drives; While solid state gains ground, vendors surprise the market with new hard disk drives. As IBM was going into the red ... it was the furthest along of the 13 baby blues as ADSTAR ... reorganization in preparation for breaking up the company. I've periodically commented that a senior disk engineer in the late 80s had got a talk scheduled for the communication group, annual, worldwide, internal conference supposedly on the subject of 3174 performance, but opened the talk with the statement that the communication group was going to be responsible for the demise of the disk division. The issue was the communication group had stranglehold on the datacenter and was fighting off distributed computing and client/server, attempting to preserve their dumb terminal paradigm and install base. The disk division was seeing the effects of data fleeing the datacenter to more distributed computing platforms with drop in disk sales. How typical. An article about new drive model or about a trend? No, it's about nothing. Just some truism. Yes, we know SSD gain the market. Yes, we know the future of classic HDD is not bright. Is it last gasp of HDD? Not so quick, not now. Check the prices and capacities in the nearest shop. BTW: Does anyone use SSD-only DASD attached to mainframe? We have some z/TPF Systems running purely on SSD. We have been using them for a couple of years.
