FYI, modern tape media, including all IBM 3592 series, have prerecorded
servo tracks. Degaussing such tape media will not only erase the data but
will also render the tapes unable to store any future data.

Tape cartridges are designed for mobility, and in my view (I'm not alone)
they are the highest priority for implementation of storage-level
encryption. All IBM 3592 family tape drives beginning with the IBM TS1120
support tape device-level encryption. You just have to configure it and
follow the implementation steps to use it. Then, when it comes time to
dispose media, you either destroy or retain the keys, and you're done --
and the tape media can be sold or donated, and reused.

If you haven't encrypted your tapes and need to protect data then please
consider overwriting the tapes so that they can be sold or donated. There
is often some value in the tape media. Degaussing, however, means the tape
cartridges are trashed, hopefully recycled for their materials in an
environmentally responsible way.

Hard drives are much the same and have been for many years. Degaussing
utterly destroys them.

Thanks ListServ listeners! A lot of good info. The people that provide the
the maintenance for the hardware is research how best to do what I need.

I'm pretty sure that the underlying operating system is AIX (IBM's version
of UNIX) and I have in house experts on that OS. I will ask them how to
format the disk drives from the operator console.

Again thanks so much for all the ideas.

I'll let you know the outcome!

Some VTL's (a.o. TS77xx) have a backend tapelibrary with physical tapes. They
need to be erased too.
When we dismissed our STK tapelibrary, we hired a degausser to erase the data
on the tapes.

Re: Yet Another Mainframe z10 Bites the Dust!

2018-09-14 Thread Brian Westerman
Depending on the VTL, you should be able to access the underlaying operating
system (normally some form of unix) via the command line or terminal access and
simply reformat the data partitions on the hard drive(s). I know this can be
done on Optica, and Luminex and IBM's TS77xx, I am assuming that all other
vendors allow the same process. They would be silly not to.

The tapes are actually just disk files on regular hard drives or partitions,
and they can be formatted just like any other hard drives. Typically, the
vendors have their OS on one drive (or partition) and your data is on one or
more other partitions (or completely other drives). You can securely format
them with the native (normally unix) format commands, and you can format them
to some other disk type if it makes you happy, then format them back to the
base type so they can be used by whoever you sell the box to.

The entire format process takes about 10 minutes per TB to do a complete format
that writes zeros multiple times to each byte. You can quick format if you
want but I don't think that will give you the security you are looking for.
So, it will run a while, so just start it and go home for a while.

Brian

Maybe I missed a post but, what ‘VTL’ are you running?
IBM has a feature code that a CE can order that will do a data erase on the
library, cache and disk. The physical backend tapes would need to be certified
destroyed. Iron Mountain can do that for you.
Just my 2 cents

Once all the tapes are deleted by writing to all 50K, you just have to
write as many volumes as needed to fill VTS. The large the dataset,
the fewer the volumes.

Not sure if this is an option for you but if the VTL encrypted the data on
disk, securely wiping the encryption keys would render all data wiped.

Depending on the connection technology of the disks, you might be able to
remove them from the VTL, connect them to a PC, then use some sort of
"disk
wipe" utility on the PC to overwrite the data on the disks. For example,
if
the disks are SATA, you could put them on a PC running Linux and simpy do
the command: "dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sd?" where "sd?" is the Linux
address of the attached disk. This would overwrite the entire disk with
random bits. If you are really paranoid:

for i in 1 2 3; do dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sd?;done

To do the overwrite 3 times. If the attachment is SCSI, there are SCSI
HBAs
for PC. Example:
https://smile.amazon.com/Dell-Non-RAID-Serial-Attached-External/dp/B0153IR6QY/

. That is a example, not a recommendation. Also, if SAS,
https://smile.amazon.com/SAS9211-8I-8PORT-Int-Sata-Pcie/dp/B002RL8I7M/
But erasing the entire drive is likely to make it unusable in the VTL.
Have
you asked the vendor if the software driving the VTL has a mass erase
function? I know that the old IBM Shark had that.

Overwrite each tape with a one track dataset of low values.
Then overwrite tapes with a very large dataset of low values until VTS is full.
Repeat one track / large datasets with high values and b'01010101'.

Repeat the 3 cycles until desired number of overwrites are accomplished.

There's a whole lot of datasets to go through to do the ERASE function.

Since the hardware maintenance was contracted out to SMS, yes I've asked
the question and they just notified me that they pushed the question up to
there support team.

Physical destruction was an option we considered, but the equipment might
be sold. I'm not sure about that statement, but it's what I've heard abound
the water cool! lol :-)

Thanks everyone for the help!

Not sure if turning on ERASE on SCRATCH in RACF - and then deleting the
datasets would work? Just a thought?

The School District of Palm Beach County is finally shutting down the IBM
z10 and all its components.

I was wondering if any member the listserve can help me with "wiping out"
out VTL. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
