[fsug-tvm] activex in firefox/ubuntu

2010-06-06 Thread Visakh
Hi Junise,

On Jun 3, 6:23 pm, stranger in black. gnu...@gmail.com wrote:
How can I view the websites with activex controls in my ubuntu 10.04 system?

There seems to be no method to run ActiveX in Gnu/Linux other than
to run IE on wine.

Besides that, I wouldn't recommend running ActiveX on any system -
it is considered one of the worst and most insecure technology ever
developed for the web. Even IE often blocks it for security reasons. I
know that this is an inappropriate reply for a help request, but
consider this as a personal advice from a friend.

as a rule of thumb the centrino certified laptops are the easier ones
to install any kind of open source distro, since intel is more open
source friendly and release their hardware documention so that even
third party developers can write drivers.

purchased with it which does not work as there are no drivers.
 2) Which computer shops in Trivandrum are most friendly to customers who use

[fsug-tvm] How to use packages.debian or ubuntu.com?

2010-06-06 Thread Vyshakh
I dont have internet at home. I used to download packages from
ubuntu's or debian's package site.

All programs will have several DEPENDENCIES and RECOMENTs.
Each of these dependencies have their own dependency further. And this
goes on practically 'indefinite'.

How can i download an application from above said web sites with all
the necessery dependency? And i can install it in my offline system?

Hi vyshakh you can find details on this by searching for offline
installation of packages in ubuntu

Here is some info from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware :

Use the Synaptic package download script

Here's how: Synaptic/PackageDownloadScript

Short instructions:

Launch Synaptic on the offline computer
Mark the packages you wish to install

Select File-Generate package download script

Save the script to your USB key
Take the USB key to an online Linux computer and run the script there
from the USB key. It will download only the packages required by the
offline computer to the USB key.
Insert the USB key into the offline computer

Launch Synaptic and click on File-Add downloaded packages

Select the directory on your USB key containing the downloaded *.deb
files and press Open. The packages will be installed.

Note: If you don't have access to a PC with GNU/Linux or
emulating/virtualizing GNU/Linux (Cygwin, VMware, VirtualBox, Qemu,
etc), just open the script with a text editor and enter all the URLs
you see in your browser to download the corresponding packages.

understand that the latest version may crash frequently. So it may be

[fsug-tvm] Re: Hard ware monitor

2010-06-06 Thread prakreet
i faced ur same situation when i started using linux.. i had a dialup
modem which only worked in windows.. i used to download .deb packages
using my dialup modem from windows which i kept as a dual boot.. then
it would show some dependency.. again i will download that n again one
more dependency pops up.. same situation as urs.. i now has a
broadband connection n an external modem which works in linux..

Now for ur solution.. as u r a new user, i suggest that u don't go for
compiling n installing of packages.. its too hard. stick to .debs..
the link i gave u gives 2 methods to install software's on ubuntu
without internet connection.. i think keryx method will be most ideal
for u..

keryx can run on linux n windows OS.. when u run keryx on ur ubuntu
system it makes a list of what all packages u have on ur computer..
now u can copy keryx on a usb n take it to the cafe n run it there.. u
can use it to download softwares to install on ubuntu.. since it knows
what all packages u have on ur computer, it will download all the
dependencies as well..

try to buy an external modem if u can.. all external modems work with
linux..

2010-06-06 Thread David Shar
Hi,

Ubuntu disk utility is very comprehensive compared to that of the windows.
It wont install unlike windows that just ignore bad sectors. You need to
change the disk or install buntu on an external. May be your partition table
is corrupt. To find out more go to Ubuntu forums and check my post under
grumpy.biatch' for further action.

Best,

David

[fsug-tvm] Re: Harddisk problem...

2010-06-06 Thread prakreet
ur hard disk has bad clusters.. it cannot be corrected by softwares..
if u format a drive, ubuntu will mark all the clusters which has a
problem n will not write data onto it.. thus u can prevent data
corruption.. it will also check to see if the bad clusters can be
used, thus some bad clusters can be recovered..

unresponsiveness is caused when ubuntu is trying to access data
written on bad clusters.. format ur harddisk drive by drive n
reinstall ubuntu.. u can fix unresponsiveness..
