It is great that you are trying to get into the Linux world.

There are basically two types of installs that people do in any PC. Single
boot and Multiboot.

Single Boooting involves using only one OS, like Windows only or Linux only.
Multibooting involves using two operating systems like Windows and Linux or
Two Linux systems in the same computer and choosing the operating system
when powering on the computer.

Choose your way first, do you want a Linux only or a Linux+Windows
combination. Then

use *Google* for that type of installation. There are a lot of tutorials
and help available online.

Thank you.

[Ilugc] Building RPMs in Ubuntu

2012-01-04 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
Hello all,

I have been using Ubuntu (debian) system all through the Linux life.
Recently I got into a situation where I am required to package a software
for a RPM system (CentOS). There are rpm build tools available in the
Ubuntu repos, but I my reading through the forums suggest that its always
better to build rpms in a rpm based system.

Considering we will be specifying the dependencies in the
packaging configuration file and we will be packaging compiled
binaries, How far does it hold good?.

Has anyone packaged RPM things on Ubuntu or any other debian system? What
are the issues you ran into? Is there really any compatibility issues?

P.S: I am asking all this to avoid another OS installation and dev
environment setup procedure. (Pardon my laziness here)

[Ilugc] Thamizha ILUGC Hackathon Report

2011-10-10 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
Hello all,

A Hackathon was organized by the ILUGC and Thamizha community members on 9th
October, Sunday at TalentSprint, Royapettai, Chennai. There were 16
participants in total.

The morning session started with Arunan demoing the setting up of git and
github accounts for the participants through Google Plus Hangout. Then an
introduction of the code version using git and how to commit to Thamizha
projects were given. There was a demo of Visaneri Project by Kishore Kumar
through Google Hangout screen sharing.

Then teams were divided based upon the personal fluency of programming
languages. The projects that the teams set on to work on are:

1. Drupal team: Creating a new Thamizha.com site with close integration to
the github and easy of use for the users to download software.

2. Python team: The python team started the work of moving an offline
wiktionary from the wxPython GUI framework to the PyQt framework.

3. JavaScript Team: This team members were working on developing a new
meaning lookup tool using the mediawiki API on the wiktionary site.

4. Content team: This team started to work on translating the
gitref.orgcontent to Tamil.

By evening Mugunthraj joined the rest of the team in the Hangout and demoed
the entire compilation e-Kalappai software.
I must confess we couldn't complete any of the projects by the evening, but
this hackathon provided a nice platform for the developers to get together
and get hooked into a project that they can work during their free time in
future.

A big thanks to Ashokan Pichai sir for offering the venue and the Kanchi LUG
members for taking their time to come down to Chennai.

Personally, I learned a number of lessons regarding event organizing and
Open Source Volunteering.

 Hi All,

We plan on having a workshop for entry level developers and enthusiasts, and
 anyone else who is interested.
It will be a day of learning/working and socialising.

The event will happen on the 9th of October (2011) from 1.00pm Brisbane time
 - which should be about 9am for those of you in .LK/.IN

For those who cannot attend it in person we will have google hangouts and a
skype channel open to join in on the fun! :)
We will also try to record screencasts of the event for those who are unable
to make it; but we really want you to join us for fun and socialising as
 well!
If your in Brisbane you do get free food and beverages (it's on me) -
Interested yet? :P (Sydney-siders grab that low fare flight, it will be
 worth it!)

The agenda is as follows (length of presentation may change):

 1. GitHub Introduction and Basics usage workshop (30mins).
 2. Qt Compiler Basics of Interface and Compiling e-kalappai project (30mins)

 Lunch Break

 3. Introduction to current status of some thamizha projects (30mins)
 4. Hackathon Start
 - Ideas and Brainstorming session
 - Forming working teams
 - Working on project

 Tea Break

 5. We will finish of with some more talks and socialising over dinner
 (unfortunately not available online :P).

Please join us for this event... and even if you are not able to be
physically there, maybe you can team up with local friends and have your own
 international event alongside us.
If there is demand for it... I will be happy to bring the event to Melbourne
and Sydney as well; or you can do it for your own city/town/place.

Please show us interest... so we can add more topics or features if you
 request it.

We are open to suggestions. Hopefully this will be first of many
 workshops+hackathons.

 Regards,
 Arunan

[Ilugc] Freelancing or Part Time Work in a Particular Company

2011-08-30 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
Hello all,

I am a student currently enrolled to my PG course in Anna University,
Chennai. I wanted to take up some sort of part time job (read as
programming) somewhere here in chennai, so I could work on my weekends and
gain a few notches in the career ladder. But a conversation on the IITM
Hackers list gave me a new perspective. The line read:

This might be beside the point - but if you are an RoR developer, you can
earn more than a google job just by freelancing.

Replacing ROR with anything suitable and considering the earning to be *not
only money*, I was made to think about freelancing. And freelancing ofcourse
had its own +and - like multiple clients, varied projects, flexible working
hours(not just weekends), also strict time constraints that might be bad
during those sem ends..etc.,

So I really wanted some expert advice on which way to go. Kindly state your
views, experiences so that I could learn a few things and decide on my path.

software and service, or is free software available and people charge for

3. And a dumb one. Suggest a package / service. Preferably free license, as

what you will end up getting is a supported hardware that is either
outdated or that lacks juice. If they have floated the tender for
home premium or professional edition I would have never helped
draft this letter.

I greatly welcome KG sir's way of drafting. But one reason i didn't
explicitly mention our role is I am not sure how it would work out.
Wouldn't it look like we are after a share of that 91.2 crores that we
say we are saving. Are we going to say we would pay unpaid support?
Whats the offer here. If the community could come to a consensus then
I would be glad to change the draft the way it needs to be.

And for the 'daunting thing', we are talking about school kids here
not college students alone. I have personally known students who think
a 30k laptop is 'duplicate' because someone has shown him a 50k one.
Try explaining windows file structure and linux file structure to him.

And at last to KG sir: Sir, please tell me why it shouldn't be bearing
the community name? Is what we are doing degrading the community in
any way.

I am sorry, I wasn't clear and that earned me a OT. Of course its glad that

they were negotiating for 500 rupees with MS for the OS, and offered a Linux

if you want to run all those packages, so why should the govt spend now?
Thats why I said buy your own or get a pirated one for your needs.

This produced a random thought in my mind. When Open Source is all about

injection/marketing whatever. Linux is the new Windows.

May be a dual boot is the real freedom from students view. Isn't it ?

Primarily i said it was a random thought, so I am welcoming your view. I am
just trying to remind people that most of us who are working now on Linux
started with Windows for learning computers (I know there wasn't a second
choice at that time), so know that windows isn't a bad thing, but that Linux
is a better thing.

Dual booting isn't going to harm anyone! I said we shouldn't force Linux on
people like Windows was once done (in above context), that way Linux would
become the new windows. I hope every linux user would accept that Linux
shouldn't be forced, but just be given as a choice and that is what FOSS is
all about Freedom to choose and use as we like to.

Please do some research on Microsoft the Windows operating system

What I meant here is: Nobody (children) would dream of playing games in a
Linux system and would surely try to get their systems Game Compatible
(Windows). Anyways, even if the govt adopts Linux, Will the children who use
it?

What are the rules here ? Can the kids just sell the laptop and buy a
 gaming system ??

IMO most of the given systems (not all, but most) would be either sold away
or be ** transformed ** into complete entertainment machines with partial
educational benefit.

So IMHO if LUG makes govt accept Linux only systems, it can be said a
technical win for FOSS, but there would be no real benefits in real world.
The migration to Windows would happen at any point.

One idea is to hardware lock (say via a custom BIOS ??) the system into
a single supported distro of Linux. They would have to carry the unit to
a service centre to unlock it and install anything else - at which point
they have to provide their student ID. Such checks are needed to
maximize benefits of tax payer money.

If such a thing happens, you will end up making a political mistake of
giving Useless systems to school children and cheating people. The
opposition would argue that why can't government give good systems by
spending just extra 1K for a 20-30K product and instead cheat people in
giving substandard and useless system. Believe me that is sure to be said.

#001 Why do you commit .swp and .pyc files? Git only tracks changes in
 content.

#002 Add a LICENSE file indicating the license under which the sources
 are released.

#003 Add a copyright, header notice in each source file.

#004 Run pylint on your *.py and fix the warning/error messages.

#005 Any reason to have not used json? You have commented its import

#006 Please follow PEP8 guidelines. For example: class names use the

2011-05-31 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
First, its great to hear the news. I wish I had this kind of support last
year when I was in final year..:(

We have 2 semesters.
We can use 1 semester for training and the next for project development.
Students will be available from 3.30 - 5.30 pm daily.

We have to plan for the following things.

 1. Trainers who can goto college in person to train the students
 2. List of open source projects to contribute
 3. Mentors for the students

If their availability can be guaranteed with internet connection, I think it
would be a good idea to create a dedicated IRC channel for initial training
periods. I have been seeing IITMHackers club organizing tutorial sessions
purely on IRC for things like VIM, Python ..etc. It also introduces them to
IRC channels which hosts highly technical discussions related to OpenSource
technologies.

We need a huge list of project as all the students have to do individual
 projects.

While individual projects can really help in improving a student's
capabilities and knowledge, I still feel a team of two can be permissible
(just an optional one), so that they can discuss and work better on the
projects.

We need more persons to participate in the huge project of turning students
 into contributors.

I am still a student by lot, and would be grateful to assist the Mentors in
any way possible. So kindly count me in, as a intermediate person.

2011-03-02 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
I don't really think there is any such classification in the real
world or at least not anything officially. What I am trying to put
forth is just a line of differentiation that would help us to see a
distinction between propertiery based languages and those languages
that are open source based.

As for the question of classifying c/c++, why go for such a high level
language? you can take up assembly language or BASIC FORTRAN for that
matter. The reason for them to not to be placed on either side is that
they were the ones on the first placed which ushered the development
of both open source and closed sourced systems. So there is nothing
like a strict protocol that defines the distinction of languages. But
rather the distinction is meant to help you chose between PHP and ASP
or between visual studio based languages and Qt based ones.

I hope I have justified the term open source languages.

[Ilugc] Making a Career in FOSS [New Business]

2011-02-28 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
Hello All,

I am a final year BE student. While most of my mates are sincerely
searching for a spot in the corporates, me and two of my friends
cherish a dream of creating a business for ourselves. We got something
like a few website development offers and that has motivated us
further. But we are not really going to stick to web development as
such and want to get into customized application development and
software deployment.

I recently saw a message in the NCR Python Users Group India
discussing Data Mining tool for collecting data from Excel Documents
and displaying them on web pages. I think these are some untapped
areas of software deployment, at least here in India.

So, now the questions in my mind are:
1. Can we really survive as a company creating application specific or
customized software for situations like the one I have mentioned
above?
2. Is there really market for such software and services in India?
Kindly keep in mind FOSS.
3. If there is a possibility to survive. Are we going to be judged by
the work we do or by the industry experience we have or supposed to
have? (Remember I am still at college)
4. At last, how much are we going to be paid for these kind of jobs?
Keeping in mind that depends on the quality of work we do and our
ability to negotiate, I would like to know the scale where I would be
starting.

I request whoever reading this mail to give your views and ideas.

P.S: If possible repost this mail in the mailing lists you prefer
appropriate. I do not know anyone in the field of software or startup

Re: [Ilugc] apt-get is not working

2011-02-28 Thread arunthe...@gmail.com
After seeing your output in the Paste I think the issue is not with
apt-get but something else.
I could only find out that far. I donot know what the exact problem
is. You are looking at the wrong place I think.
