It is not really about one party or the other, I guess. There seems to be a
good level awareness among Government officials about need for open
standards.

Have a look at this tender document for developing and maintaining website
for Income Tax Department.
http://incometaxindia.gov.in/archive/TenderWebMaster.zip

It talks about Non-proprietory Document Formats, Accessibility Issues, CSS
based design and sets the eligibility criteria quite low (at Rs 50 lakh per
annum turnover for 3 years).

The requirements look designed for a open source solution provider to bid
low enough and win the contract. Any proprietary software based bid does not
stand a chance, if (a big IF) an open source bids goes through the first
rounds.

Whatever it is, I'm certain that political parties aren't trying to
woo us to vote for them! :)
Yes. It would be really wonderful to have a country up and running on FOSS..

I remember reading somewhere, ZDNet i think, that this will draw flak
from the proprietary software community and that there'll be lots of
obstacles and hindrances from 'enemies', Microsoft topping the list..
I won't be surprised of Microsoft agrees to develop a basic open
source OS for the smartphones which the BJP plans to distribute if
they come to power. :)

It is to be seen whether they earnestly implement their manifesto or
it is nothing but hot air and empty promises.

They are already using open source in their portal.. The company that
is handling their IT operation is Tetra (tetrain.com) which is doing
business on open source consulting.

Regarding their IT Vision, the following points are appreciated..

* 2 MBPS Internet connection at every village. (its possible,
considering the fact that EVDO provides up to 2.4 MBPS even in smaller
towns)..

* To standardise open standard and open source.
* Promotion of IT in Indian Languages.. -- i think, if they implement
this, its a boost for more penetration of open source to our people, who
dont know english..

any way.. if other political parties also follow this, then the open
source concept will spread to people through election.. (people will
atleast want know what open source is)

I found one reference to "open source" (page 3/40 )

"@ Government of India to standardise on 'open standard' and 'open source'
software. An IT standards-setting body would be spun out of BIS
(Bureau of Indian Standards)"

and another reference to "open-source" (with a hyphen on page 23/40)

"The dream of a Rs.10,000-laptop cannot be realised with pre-loaded costly
commercial software. Therefore, our Government will actively promote free
open-source software, including the operating system, which would also
introduce the habit of innovation ('tinkering') in the student community."

[Ilugc] Open Source now in political domain

2009-03-14 Thread senthilraja P
Hi,

http://news.rediff.com/report/2009/mar/14/loksabhapoll-bjp-to-promote-free-open-software.htm

While i do not want to bring politics here, i would like to highlight the
amount of awareness that the above news could bring in. If other political
parties follow the same announcement, then open source will get a boost.

Already some of the political leaders are using open source to great
extent. For example, in www.lkadvani.in joomla and wordpress is used. And
they are using phplist for the mailing list too.

Do any one have info on how other political leaders are using open source?
