I have Ubuntu 7.04 and Kubuntu 7.04 CDs (i386 versions), if anybody
wants to copy.

it requires a more thorough read and study to assimilate his vast
 array of ideas.

at the end of the talk a few people approached me for cds of ubuntu.
soon the outside desk was happily converted into 'cd-sharing'. ubuntu
 7.04 discs shared:

 1) 64-bit version
 2) standard version.
 3) alternate-iso. this is for systems that can't handle the graphic installer.
 4) ubuntustudio.

you may collect the following people for further requesting and sharing cds:

 01) karunakar, who copied a few to his laptop.
 02) anand shankar, on to his thumbdrive.
 03) Satyakam Goswami
  . . .

quite a few other people also copied cds to their laptops, and to some
i just gifted the extra copies i had. can't recall everyone's name at
this moment. could you all please share your names here if you wish
others to contact you for further copies? thanks.

all of us happy folks missed kenneth gonsalves. but am sure if anyone
contacts him, he would be happy to share cds of ubuntu with everyone,
 too. he's NRC-FOSS, and a great guy for community-building.

Except that HCL laptops are rather badly engineered. We have two, and
from very early on, every screw seems to be loose and their switches
keep coming off. So, do watch out.

afaik, this isnt possible using straight broadcast material. Some content
companies and establishments will make an alternative copy available online
either on their website or someone else's website and attach a more liberal
licensing policy with that. Nothing broadcast using conventional means is ever
really liberally licensed.

thanks shams for the quick response.
as a fellow author, here's what i've learnt the hard way, so am just sharing:

any authored work must either state its copyright ownership with year,
or must be dedicated to the pubilc domain.

you can't just leave it fuzzy in today's bankrupt world. ;-)

if you state it copyright, and wish it to be shared, then you must
publish it under a copyleft license, such as fdl, or verbatim, or
choose an appropriate one from creativecommons.

you could also write your own license, but in almost all cases the
above two options work.

actually there's a whole bunch of vendors in india who officially sell
linux-based hardware. the problem is once the hardware is installed at
customers' sites, do they even boot into linux?

so would be wonderful to hear of 'genuine linux advantage' stories, if

not so. Copyright arises from the fact of publication. And unless the

work, then he has to state the terms of the license. Please learn to

thanks kenneth for the clarification, however, what i'm saying is that
in today's 'bankrupt age' this is what *i've* learnt the hard way:

a) that you must explicitly assert your copyright ownership by
explicitly stating it while publishing. [to be understood in the
current state-of-affairs]

b) the license must also be stated *IF* the author wishes to share it
with some forms of flexibility for end-users and others.

c) am also trying to point out how we need to take proactive but
careful steps towards authoring for the public domain, while still
alive. :-)

thanks kenneth for the clarifications, and yes i am quite aware of the
differences between copyright, copyleft, license, patent, and
trademark.
plus, have been advising and trying to orient publishing businesses in
all forms of media to consider how to explicitly state these aspects
of their authored works.

the best talk i've heard in india on this topic was delivered a few
years ago by dr ajay shah that was truly quite inspiring. would be
wonderful to invite him to deliver a talk on this and the gpl3. he
always has interesting insights to share.
