[ilugd] L4Linux

2008-10-29 Thread Mani A
L4Linux is a port of the Linux kernel to the L4 µ-kernel API. It is a
(para-)virtualized Linux running on top of a hypervisor, completely
without privileges if wanted.

L4Linux runs in user-mode on top of the µ-kernel, side-by-side with
other µ-kernel applications such as real-time components. It is
binary-compatible with the normal Linux/x86 kernel and can be used
with any PC-based Linux distribution.

The DROPS operating system project supports running time-sharing and
real-time applications applications concurrently on one computer. The
L4Linux server has been originally created to support time-sharing
applications.

The port provides us with a basis platform for future development work.

Compared to monolithic Linux, there is a small performance tradeoff
because of the µ-kernel architecture. However, the initial L4Linux has
been somewhat optimized, and on L4/x86 it has a very acceptable
slowdown of less than 4 % for any relevant load.

See http://os.inf.tu-dresden.de/L4/LinuxOnL4/doc.shtml

Best

A. Mani

Just for info, L4 is very extensively used in my company's products
(embedded devices), so much so that it has replaced our own in-house
OS completely for our devices. (What exactly are our devices? Hint:
They are part of some of the most coveted thingies these days and we
even discussed one of them a few days ago here on this list ;) )

[ilugd] Hardware for Software??

2008-10-29 Thread Prakhar Agarwal
Hi guys,
I read this article:
*Title:* Windows 7 will be MS' answer to Vista's faults
*Link*: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3649393.cms**

It is mentioned between the lines that Microsoft is working with PC makers
to make the hardware compatible with Windows 7 and readily available in
market. My dilemma is- We make software for hardware or vice versa?? What is
the right approach?
I feel the former is logically and traditionally correct. Lets see what
everyone has to say.

Cheers!

Prakhar, the statement is partially correct. Basically this implies two things:
1. MS works with PC makers to make sure that their hardware
configurations are capable of running windows, (certified that the
configuration will work with windows)
2. MS also fixes issues found in windows during this exercise and/or
create/accept/certify drivers/bios etc for different hw..

There is both hardware-independant and dependant software. Whether it
is 80%-20%, or 70%-30% or any other is up to you to decide.
