Re: [ilugd] UID, Aadhar and Open Source
http://efytimes.com/e1/fullnews.asp?edid=73727 OSS Used In Aadhaar To Avoid Vendor lock-in: Balasubramanian EFY News Network (Sunday, November 20, 2011 2:34:20 PM) The main reason to use OSS (open source software) in the Aadhaar project was not to save cost but to avoid vendor lock-in. And it was important that we have an ability to replace hardware, software or storage, Regunath Balasubramanian, principal architect of the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) project said in his keynote titled Use of OSS in Aadhaar project – The World’s Largest Identity Platform at OSI Days 2011, Bengaluru. He further added, “We have also reduced licence cost for the world’s largest distributed deployment on thousands of CPU cores. We used OSS like Apache Hadoop, Hive, ZooKeeper, MySQL, Tomcat, Spring and Mule. So far, 60 million enrollments have been made in 18 months, and about 1 petabyte of data processed and archived.” The continued success of Aadhaar can promote the use of OSS in e-governance for large and complex systems, Balasubramanian added. Personally, as far as I am concerned, it cannot be soon enough that the IUD^W UID money-grab comes to an end. Too bad that it seems like that public money has already been spent on this cynical (from the side of the proponents) boondoggle. I suppose that this is peanuts compared to the standard scams that the Indian public seems to have gotten used to, but nevertheless. Well said, Gora. It was made when forced to use Linux by the Kerala Governent. No one gives help on this, so, if an agency wishes to sue it, they are on their own. Hence, there is a sort of indirect promotion of widow OS, while the talk of Open-source is all the time there when talking t events etc. Rest of the work is being done by fewer agencies and its not clear what they use. But even in Kerala they are not using it now. All are in windows. and more over the Biometric scanners works only with Windows . There is no vendor independence here , Both Scanner supply and deduplication will be done by L-1 Security solutions (OT: which also have former CIA people on sitting on their board) I have seen some tweets about CIDR is using MySQL (from OSI India days presentation by a UIDAI guy) . But while going through #UIDAI documents , the general perception i am getting is this. UIDAI assumes several practices when put into operation will overcome the horrendous impracticality of biometric id systems.
