[ilugd] How to mount ISO File from internet

2004-09-22 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
Hi Everyone,

I want to download selected files from a Linux Distribution ISO form the net.
So, is there any means to mount as ISO image directly from the ftp site and download
selected files out of it.
I tried a lot on google, the only option I found WebDrive for windows, but that didn't
help much either.
So, if anyone has a solution, do write in
and Thanks in Advance.

[ilugd] Is Linux Compatible with Centrino (Dothan) Processor

2004-06-15 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
Hi Everyone.

I am planning to buy the new Dell 8600 notebook with Intel Centrino 745 1.8 GHz
Processor Codenamed Dothan. This new centrino has 2MB Level 2 Cache as compared to
1 MB L2 Cache in the earlier series of Centrino Processors.

I would like to know if the latest Linux kernel supports the Dothan range of
processors.

If yes, is there any major distribution built on this version of kernel.

Thanks to everyone who responds.

[ilugd] Problem with GRUB

2004-06-15 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
Hi

I have a bit of problem booting with GRUB.
I am using a dual boot system with Win XP and Linux.
I installed PCQ Linux 2004.
The GRUB loader was working perfectly until one day the boot loader gave me the GRUB
Prompt instead of the GUI Screen.
Since i had the kernel and initrd locations written, I managed to boot into linux.
I do not know how to reload GRUB GUI,
so I used the Install GRUB option from Webmin which comes preinstalled with PCQLinux.

But things got worsened.
Firstly, the boot msg showed:
Loading Grub stage1.5
instead of stage2

and then nothing appeared on the screen.

However to my surprise the boot loader is working.
If i press the Right Arrow key instead of Enter by moving on the right choice, it
boots on to it.

Windows is booting perfectly.
But when i boot into Linux, during whole text portion gets filled with absurd lines
all over the characters.
Although it works perfectly normal when it reaches the GUI screen.
Similarly while shutting down the text screen again gets filled with absurd lines.

Kindly help me to sovle this problem and tell me how to properly re-install and bring
back the GUI screen of GRUB.

Thanks to everyone who responds.

[ilugd] Query regarding FC2 Installation

2004-06-15 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
HI

In the recent mails in the mailing list, I have learned about the problem of
installing Fedora Core 2 on a dual boot system since it changes the Partition Format
from LBA to CHS.

The solution suggested by someone was to manually select LBA option for the hard disk
from the BIOS.

I have Intel D865GBF Original motherboard with Seagate 80GB SATA Hard Disk.
In the BIOS settings, if I select the HDD to Auto mode,
the BIOS takes LBA Support as Enabled.
If I select User Mode,
then the BIOS gives me the options to set LBA Mode to either Disabled or Auto

What should I do now?
Should I keep it to Auto and proceed with the Installation or still wait for Fedora to
patch the problem.

Secondly, I wanted to know about swap space allocation.
I have read that the swap space should normally be twice the size of RAM.
I currently have 256 MB RAM, so i have a swap partition of 512MB.
But I am planning to upgrade to 1 GB Ram.
What swap space should I Allocate Now??
Should it be 2 GB or less?

Thanks in advance to everyone who helps me out.

Re: [ilugd] Visual Basic Access Alternate under Linux

2004-04-30 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
Hi Vijay
and all other VB developers out there desiring to move to Linux w/out
leaving the feel of VB.

I am also a VB developer on MS Access backend. For the past few months i
have been searching badly for Linux alternative of the same. Ultimately, I
found something really interesting.
Check out www.realsoftware.com for their product RealBASIC 5.5.1

It is a visual basic alternative with very similar language and interface.
A built-in database engine similar to MS Access.
It also gives a facility to import not so complex vb programs and ms access
database structures.

Another best thing is the same program can be compiled to work on Windows,
MAC and Linux making it OS independent.

There are only two drawbacks:
1. Its IDE is available in Windows and MAC. You have to compile the program
for Linux from Windows or MAC.
2. It is not free.

You can download a 10 days demo from the site, but it is not a sufficient
time to learn it.
But still, go ahead and try it. It is worth it.

be work as it is in linux through or by some emulator.

[ilugd] Need Suggestions for Text-to-Speech softwares

2004-04-08 Thread Kunal Singhal \(Linux\)
Hi Everyone.
This is my first post on this mailing list.
Since I have attended LinuxAsia 2004, I have been trying to learn Linux as much as
possible and also helping other people in my area to move to Linux. To do more RD on
Linux, it involves reading alot of documentation and online resources on the computer.
This makes it very stressful for my eyes.

So can anyone suggest some good text-to-speech softwares which have a more human like
voice output. Because the most of which i have tried till now have a very computerised
voice, which is not good enough to read out a book or anything like that.

I thank in advance anyone who replies to my mail.
