[ilugd] [Promotional] Social Media for FOSS Event

2010-11-18 Thread vinay singh
Today whenever we arrange any seminar or workshop on FOSS the first
question which strikes our mind is about the crowd. How many are going
to come ?? Arranging this workshop is worth?? The reason is that
eventhough today FOSS Community is not reachable to most of the
commons, the people who are already in this community only they get
the news regarding the events, meetups and most of them are not
interested to share that. FOSS events are the first step to enter
these communities, looking and listening hackers live creates an
enthusiasm and people become FOSS lovers like you and me. Could you
imagine for FOSS community only on IRC's and mailing groups without
any FOSS event?? To increase our reach we need a common Social Media.

So, from this september month iftytech labs introduced a non-profit
section that is a social media for the FOSS
Events(http://iftytech.com/node/6). The idea behind this is to promote
open as well closed events through social media so tht people in
remote location can reach the event online or offline. This concept
can turn a closed and local event into a global one and will create a
competition sort of thing among small colleges in organizing such
events and which is good for the FOSS Community.

iftytech labs request you to share the information of any FOSS
event, meetups, workshops in around you to us, we will promote that and
we will try to reach there to cover the event and to create after
event job.
You can share information simply on : iftytech[AT]gmail[DOT]com

Promoting this social media is quite simple

I will send the slides over to you today, thanks for hosting them. The

Andrew mentioned something about a spike/test setup for some sort of a
completely automated infrastructure stack. Is that still on the cards ?

 Very much:

Ulterior motive: I have two hundred machines, presently running RHEL,
all in one computer center, and want to run a facility management
system. They are all pretty recent: Dual core athlon 64, but only
512MB RAM, and are connected with 100 mbps ethernet. It would be great
if we could fix them so that users can log in through LDAP and their
home directory is automounted. Ulterior motive - behind the ulterior
motive: I want to use the idle cycles on these captive 400 processors
to build a high-throughput system using condor.

Training: We can use a few to simulate a data center. Set up cobbler
on another server (also available) to test the automated
infrastructure stack. This is best done on a Sunday - and I do need
the assurance that (at least a few of ) the machines would be working
 desktops the day after!

  Hi,

Hie folks, i just wanted to know isn't there any scope for a linux
fresher in the market as every one wants experienced person so how should a
fresher start his career in this domain.

  snip
My experience in this is totally opposite Randhir. There is lots of scope
for freshers but may not be for someone like me. Here I am with a MCA
degree, lots of experience in Windows to Linux Migration (Desktops as well
as Servers), Featured in Linux for You magazine for the same and still
 waiting for a decent job.

So, as they say, keep trying, one day you will succeed.

Re: [ilugd] What's the syntax to install any software

2009-05-06 Thread Vinay Yadav
hey first decompress the package
read Readme file or install instruction
usually following command will help you
./configure
make
make install

it seem you still not install gcc so 'make' will not going to work
better you should download rpm package of GCC (if you are using red hat base
linux)
and run
rpm -i gcc.rpm

And if you are using Debian package download dpkg package of gcc
and run dpkg -install gcc.dpkg

For novice I suggest to use Ubuntu (above 8)
and for installing any package just write
apt-get install package-name

it will automatically download package from net and install the software

   (1) How are people locked into Lamp ?

incase a particular platform vendor decides to fork the offering into

Since as of today MySQL is GPL, you cannot force a single user of MySQL

Does MySQL have *zero* community contributed code licensed under GPL?
If not then doesn't that prevent Oracle from charging even for the
  next version?

 MySql follows dual license model:

[ilugd] CPI(M) manifesto calls for promotion of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)

2009-03-18 Thread vinay ವಿನಯ್

Dear All,

The political support for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) continues
to increase.

The CPI(M) manifesto released on the 16th of March calls for the
promotion of FOSS. The manifesto can be accessed at
http://www.cpim.org/manifesto.pdf

Following are some of the highlights of the policy -
- Promoting FOSS and other such new technologies, which are free from
monopoly ownership through copyrights or patents;
- Revamping the functioning of the Patent offices to ensure strict
adherence to the Indian Patent Act; Stop training and orientation of
Indian Patent office personnel by the US and European Patent offices

These above measures are critical to support the public education
system, local economy and the knowledge commons and counter neo-liberal
pressures that aim to privatize the public information/knowledge domain.

The CPI(M) has been a traditional supporter of free software, the
comprehensive IT programs in Kerala, including in the public school
system (http://itschool.gov.in/otherprograms.php#6) is based on FOSS.
With key parties from both the left and the right end of the political
spectrum endorsing FOSS, the Congress is left as the only major
national party which is yet to formally take a position on FOSS. One
hopes that the Congress too will soon extend its support for free
software when it releases its own manifesto next week, and explicitly
acknowledge the significant political, socio-cultural and economic
advantages of FOSS over proprietary software platforms (see
http://public-software.in/FOSS-manifesto for a call from the Network of
the FOSS Community in India to the political parties, to recognise the
advantages of FOSS in their election manifestos).

Thanks,
Vinay.

[ilugd] FOSS Manifesto for Indian political parties

2009-03-09 Thread vinay ವಿನಯ್

Hi All,

Some of you may have seen (in other LUGs or elsewhere) a draft FOSS
manifesto which has been circulated. With elections approaching in April
2009, it was time to create a FOSS manifesto for Indian political
parties. This manifesto calls upon political parties to support FOSS in
India through certain suggested policy measures/actions.

The FOSS manifesto has been put up as a petition -
http://www.public-software.in/FOSS-manifesto

The idea is to collect as many signatures as possible and then submit
the petition along with the list of signatories to various political
parties.

Hence, more the number of signatures, greater the weight of the petition.

Please go ahead and view the petition and endorse it if you are ok with
this petition.

Please also pass on this message to anyone else you know outside of the
community, who might be willing to endorse the petition.

Thanks to Deeproot Linux for helping put this up!

Thanks,
Vinay.

Please note that case is important: You probably mean
/dev/ttyUSB0 above. Please note also that the card
might show up as a serial device, /dev/ttyACM0. The
easiest way to find the device is to plug it in, wait
for it to settle, and run sudo wvdialconf which will
look for a modem on various ports, and write a sample
configuration file to /etc/wvdial.conf (back this up
first if you have made some modifications to it).

i more google on issue and luckly find a driver for linux version but
 after
running rpm -i package it doesnot show any response ..even no read me

Have no experience with the BSNL card, but you should
not need a driver. At least the cards from Reliance,
Airtel, Tata Indicom, etc., do not, though these are
not broadband cards. Please try normal wvdial after
removing any files installed by the driver.

dmesg (after plugging card..showing only those line which feel imp

  dmesg

  '2.6.18.2-34-default SMP mod_unload 586 REGPARM gcc-4.1'
 [...]

Someone more well-versed in this might chip in, but this
looks like the binary driver was compiled for a different
kernel version. There are good reasons to stay away from
 binary-only drivers.

Please show us dmesg output when the card is plugged in
 after removing the binary driver.

 Gora

[ilugd] National Coalition for promotion of FOSS - meeting on 22.02.2009

2009-02-19 Thread vinay ವಿನಯ್

Dear All,

Many of us have been advocating for several years the adoption of FOSS
applications and platforms and FOSS related advocacy has been gathering
momentum. Last year, we had an advocacy processes relating to software
patents and the OOXML debate, we had RMS and Eben Moglen visiting
various places in India sharing their views on FOSS.

Yet, we do have a long way to go before FOSS is widely used in India.
Bringing different groups of actors (who believe in the principles of
Free Software), including academic institutions, NGOs and CBOs, research
and advocacy groups, professional associations, FOSS enterprises
providing services in different areas as development, training, support
and maintenance, we believe will help in supporting and cohering a
positive discourse in favour of FOSS.

Some of us have been thinking that a loose national coalition of such
individuals/ organizations and associations should be formed that will
work towards the widespread adoption and promotion of FOSS. Such a
network of organizations working along a broad consensus on promoting
FOSS will provide stronger and more effective responses to events
relating to FOSS as well as initiate proactive actions than perhaps
individuals or institutions acting in isolation. We are writing to you
all, to suggest a meeting to discuss this idea of the coalition and
thereafter also items for immediate action. We would request you to join
for a half-day meeting, on Sunday, the 22nd of February to discuss the
same.

Time : 3pm - 6pm
Venue : CIS office, Cunningham road, Bangalore, landmark – same building
as Wockhardt hospital

Map : http://tinyurl.com/apltcb

Present below is the proposed agenda for the meeting -

a. Formation of a national coalition of organisations advocating for
FOSS. The goals, scope, priorities, approaches, structures, issues /
risks, alternatives, resources for such a coalition etc, name of the
coalition will be discussed.

Some proposed activities which can be discussed -

b. Working with government departments and public sector units
advocating them to adopt and promote FOSS
When we individually speak to any of our contacts/departments in the
government the impact may not be significant. However, if we send
collective representations to departments such as the e-Governance, IT,
Education, RDPR departments, and seek meetings to explain the issue and
the advantages of FOSS, it would gradually help them to look at the
issue in depth.

c. FOSS initiatives in the country, including the Gujarat ICT in schools
program

Many state governments across India are in different stages of adoptiong
FOSS (many on the extreme of not using FOSS!) and we can share our
understanding and views on the current situation. The Gujarat government
for instance is implementing a 500 crore ICT in school education
program. They are inclined to go towards FOSS, however the final
decision has not been taken yet. We need to look at ways so that they
consider FOSS seriously. There are also plans for a FOSS workshop in
Delhi, where different groups, including political parties and
government officials could be invited and disuss the advantages of
adopting and promoting FOSS.

d. FOSS initiatives in Karnataka

There are some initiatives in Karnataka for which we can work together
to help in the adoption of FOSS.

We have an informal request for a proposal for a pilot project to train
government staff and vendor staff in Bangalore on GNU/Linux platform
that has been chosen for the ICT in schools program. We also need to
work on the issue of using Nudi on FOSS. A big impediment currently to
getting the government to use FOSS is be that 'Nudi' works only on MS
Windows and does not work on FOSS distributions. Lastly we should
explore what could be done to help VTU adopt FOSS and prefer it over
proprietary technologies. Engineering colleges adopting FOSS will make a
huge impact on the creation of the FOSS ecosystem in the state.

We can also discuss other means and methods which we can collectively
work on to promote FOSS.
Please do let us know if you can make it (so that we know how many
chairs, tea/coffee we need) Please mail vi...@itforchange.net
mailto:vi...@itforchange.net to let us know. Please also mail in with
suggestions and ideas for the agenda for the meeting.

In case you are interested in participating in the coalition, but are
unable to join the meeting, please do email and let us know.

Thanks,

Vinay (On behalf of the organizers - Anivar Aravind, ,Gurumurthy K,
Renuka Prasad, Sunil Abraham, Vinay Sreenivasa)

Some hard facts reinforcing these statements and specific targets would
be welcome. Otherwise it's too broad and too vague an agenda to be
 taken seriously.

Hi Raj,

Here are some examples..it doesnt really cover all the aspects of what
we have written in the open letter, but should give an idea of what we
are talking about. Will mail more soon..

“Chances are
that as you read this article, it is passing over part of ATT's network.
That matters, because last week ATT announced that it is seriously
considering plans to examine

all the traffic it carries for potential violations of U.S. intellectual
property laws. The prospect of ATT, already accused of spying on our
telephone calls, now scanning every e-mail

and download for outlawed content is way too totalitarian for my tastes.”
(Prof Tim Wu)

http://www.slate.com/id/2182152

And another one about Google becoming perhaps the world’s most powerful
gatekeeper about what people and see nd hear and what not.

“ Some critics worried that free speech in America was threatened less
by government suppression than by editorial decisions made by the
handful of private mass-media corporations like NBC and CBS that
disproportionately controlled public discourse. …..”

“Today the Web might seem like a free-speech panacea: it has given
anyone with Internet access the potential to reach a global audience.
But though technology enthusiasts often celebrate the raucous explosion
of Web speech, there is less focus on how the Internet is actually
regulated, and by whom. As more and more speech migrates online, to
blogs and social-networking sites and the like, the ultimate power to
decide who has an opportunity to be heard, and what we may say, lies
increasingly with Internet service providers, search engines and other
Internet companies like Google, Yahoo, AOL, Facebook and even eBay.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/30/magazine/30google-t.html?ex=1385614800en=f64b269f4412d488ei=5124partner=facebookexprod=facebook

The most powerful and protean of these Internet gatekeepers is, of
course, Google. With control of 63 percent of the world’s Internet
searches, as well as ownership of YouTube, Google has enormous influence
over who can find an audience on the Web around the world.”

[ilugd] Defending the threat to the public-ness and the egalitarian nature of the Internet

2008-11-28 Thread vinay sreenivasa

Hi All,

Apologies for cross-posting.

Most of us tend to take the commons and the public nature of the
Internet for granted. However, increasing corporatisation and control of
the Internet are strongly threatening these fundamental characteristics
of the Internet as we know it. Therefore, six civil society
organisations in India have proposed an open letter to the UN Internet
Governance Forum which meets for its third annual meeting between 3rd
and 6th December in Hyderabad. The letter exhorts urgent global action
to ensure that the public-ness and the egalitarian nature of the
Internet are preserved as its essential features. The possibilities of
democracy, equity and social justice in our societies will be
significantly impacted by the extent to which we can achieve this
objective.

The proposed letter is pasted below. If you and/or your organization
wish to endorse this letter, please indicate so in response to this
email by the midnight of 1st December(India time). Please respond
offline and not to the entire mailing list.

The proposed open letter can also be accessed at
http://www.itforchange.net/component/content/article/195-igf-open-letter.html

Thanks,
Vinay.

* An Open Letter to the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF)
for its 3rd Annual Meeting at Hyderabad, India, from 3rd to 6th
December, 2008

*

*The IGF must ACT NOW against the threat to the
public-ness and the egalitarian nature of the Internet
   *

The undersigned wish to express their deep concern that the UN Internet
Governance
Forum (IGF), created by the World Summit on the Information Society in
2005 as an
Internet ‘policy dialogue’ forum, is largely failing to address key
public interest and
policy issues in global Internet governance – including that of
democratic deficit.

*Who shapes the Internet, as the Internet shapes our new social context?*
The Internet represents the single most important technical advance of
our society in a
long time, so much so that it defines a new emerging social paradigm.
The basic
characteristics of the Internet determine the contours of the emerging
social order in
many important ways. The Internet was conceived as, and still largely
is, an extensive
communication system which is democratizing, and has little respect for
established
social hierarchies. Interactions and associations built over this new
‘techno-social’

system have, therefore, held the promise of a more egalitarian society.
The era of innocence of the Internet however appears to be fast
approaching its end.
Today, the Internet of the future – the very near future – is being
shaped insidiously by
dominant forces to further their interests. (See the fact-sheet on the
following page for
some illustrations of this.) Unfortunately, global policy forums have
largely failed to
articulate, much less act on, crucial Internet policy issues, which
concern the

democratic possibilities for our societies.

*The IGF needs to act now!*
As the Internet Governance Forum convenes for its third annual meeting,
between 3rd
and 6th December, 2008, in Hyderabad, India, it must take immediate
steps to anchor
and discuss important global public interest and policy issues involved
in Internet
governance. If it does not act now, it may get seen as a space that only
provides an
illusion of a public policy dialogue, and, consequently, as being
co-opted in furthering
the agenda of dominant forces that are shaping the Internet as per their
narrow
interests. *We therefore strongly urge the IGF to directly address the
following key

global public interest and policy issues:

1. Increasing corporatisation of the Internet
2. Increasing proprietisation of standards and code that go into
building the

Internet
3. Increasing points of control being embedded into the Internet in the name
of security and intellectual property violations
4. Huge democratic deficit in global Internet governance

*We exhort the IGF to adopt clear directions for engaging with these
crucial public
policy issues. The IGF should come out with a clear work plan at its
forthcoming

meeting in Hyderabad to address the four key areas listed above.
The global community – comprising not only people who currently have
access to the
Internet, but also the un-connected billions who are being impacted by
it nevertheless
– will judge the meaningfulness and legitimacy of the IGF in terms of
what progress it

is able to make on these issues.

[ilugd] Articles on Software patents and software freedom in today's(Sep 24) 'Hindu'

2008-09-24 Thread vinay sreenivasa
Hello All,

Apologies for cross-posting.

On the occasion of 'International Day against software patents' , the
Hindu has extensively covered the issues of software patents and
software freedom. There are four articles below - 2 of them explore
software patents (view from foss community, industry, academia) . 2
other articles cover software freedom (a generic article on software
freedom and another on the absence of foss in school curricula) .

***

* Will patenting take the byte out of IT here? * Deepa Kurup
BANGALORE: Picture this. Indian mathematicians came up with the concept
of the “zero” — often touted as India’s greatest contribution to
civilisation — and got a patent for it. By now they would have raked in
inestimable amounts in royalty. Seems preposterous? Members of the Free
Software community say that patenting every other algorithm would be
somewhat in the same league.

For full article pls read -
http://www.hindu.com/2008/09/24/stories/2008092461910300.htm

***

* Why is it important to go the ‘free’ way? *

V. Sridhar

Bangalore: One of the most misleading aspects of the “debate” on free
software — or Open Source software — pertains to what is meant by
“free.” Those ridiculing the free software activists — typically
dismissed as “the techie types” — portray them as a bunch of folks who
just want software to be sold for free.

However, those who passionately advocate free software argue that their
emphasis is on free, as in freedom. “Let software be free from the
shackles of full-fledged commercial exploitation” seems to be their
refrain. It is important to steer clear of the pejorative connotations
implied by those who adopt an adversarial stand on free software.

* Black-and-white, with some grey areas ( *

Anand Parthasarathy

Bangalore: For the mainstream global IT players, software patenting is a
clear-cut issue, and they have no time for ifs and buts: They are for
it. In the wake of the ongoing public consultations on the Patent
Manual, which throws up issues related to software patenting, /The Hindu
/spoke to India leaders of some key IT players to find out what they
thought:

Naresh Gupta, Sr. Vice President, Print Publishing Business Unit
Adobe, and Managing Director, Adobe India, a leader of the imaging
software and solutions business, says: “We believe in safeguarding of
intellectual property rights. Adobe invests significant resources
towards innovation and we expect protection of our Intellectual Property
Rights, to be able to sustain business.”

Wrong choice?/ Students are taught to use only proprietary software. *

BANGALORE: A computer literacy programme in a public sector organisation
teaches the following modules: MS Office, MS Power Point, MS Excelsheet
and Internet Explorer. A glance through the “computer syllabus” in most
schools, and the list is similar. All items on this checklist have one
thing in common: proprietary software. So, if every computer user is
being taught exclusively on proprietary platforms, would they ever be
comfortable switching to the easier, cheaper and readily available
alternatives?

 thanks swapnil,

actually, i did cover a lot of topics within audacity, despite it not

collection of music using audacity; how to save yourself from
ear-damage; equalization presets in audacity; 'noise-removal' using
audacity; and we all generally discussed how the quality of mp3 music
from hindi movies, ghazals, qawallis, even indian classical is erratic
and at times poor and how to watch out for quality-digitization and to
 fix common problems.
we also discussed western music scales versus indian music's
 'micro-tonal' scales.

still, wish audacity's mp3 codecs worked without that portaudio

 maybe another time, maybe soon.
gora and i informally discussed we should do this. proper.

meanwhile, do keep playing around with gnaural, and create your mp3

[ilugd] Microsoft Vs Open source on NREGA ICT infrastructure

2008-09-11 Thread vinay sreenivasa
On the NREGA ICT infrastructure page -
http://nrega.nic.in/ictinfrastructure.htm

I found this -- http://nrega.nic.in/ict/ict3.asp

check the columns titled - No. of Applications Running

and it shows number of 'applications' running on Microsoft platforms and
those running on 'open source' platforms.
Not too sure what this means. Why would for e.g some state have 450 s/w
applications ??and why would they be all different?

Does anybody know what exactly this means? I'm guessing they mean number
of machines running on MS or open source.

Whatever it is, the fact that open source has a count of 0 in most
states is something worth looking into.

[ilugd] Draft policy on Open standards for e-Gov in India -Open for Public review

2008-09-03 Thread vinay
Hi All,

The government has released a draft version of a Policy on Open standards
for e-Governance. It is presently open for Public review.

Please find the policy at the link below-
http://egovstandards.gov.in/Policy_Open_Std_review

The policy seems to have some really good points like-
5.1) Mandatory Characteristics:
5.1.1)Selected Standard should be Royalty Free for life time of the standard.
5.1.2)Selected Standard should be developed in a collaborative and consensus
manner and not led by a single agency or a small closed group of interested
parties
5.1.3)Selected Standard should be recursively open; They shall not use
unpublished extensions

However we really do need to look at it with greater detail and discuss
the same.

[ilugd] FLOSSInclude

2008-07-14 Thread vinay
Hello All,

Greetings from IT for Change.

I had earlier shared information about a new FLOSS project that we had
started working on - FLOSSInclude (http://www.flossinclude.org/)

I am writing to you again to give you details about the planned activities
in this project and to seek your support for the same. The FLOSSInclude
project is an international research project in FLOSS and open standards
which aims to study the requirements of increasing the deployment,
development and societal impact of FLOSS in Africa, Asia and Latin
America.
ITforChange (http://www.itforchange.net/) and Sarai, India
(http://www.sarai.net/) are the two organizations in India, which will be
a part of this project.

As part of this project IT for Change seeks to focus on ‘FLOSS and the
public sector’, and will study the role of public sector agencies in
procuring, organizing and stimulating production of FOSS, including using
FLOSS for public administration, and sharing of FLOSS applications among
public sector bodies.

We specifically aim to understand;
(1) the context of, and requirements for, a wide scale deployment and use
of FLOSS within the public sector agencies in India,
(2) the issues and challenges involved in building an ecology for the
development of such FLOSS and applications that have the most development
and governmental uses, and,
(3)the issues and challenges in fostering sharing software in the public
sector.

Understanding such techno-social as well as social factors would be useful
to understand, conceptualize and design programs that would further the use
of FLOSS in these sectors.

Our activities in the initial phase of this project will include -
1. Collection and analysis of data on government policies on FOSS and
open standards, and on FOSS implementation in Indian public sector
2. A study on the issues of perceptions regarding software choices within the
public sector
3. Undertaking a techno-social analysis of success and/or failure of FOSS
implementations in the public sector

As we launch the first phase, we request your support for gathering
information in the above mentioned area. Please do let us know of any
organizations/individuals/resources which might prove useful in gathering
such information.

Looking forward to your support through the project.

Please email back if any further clarification is needed on this.
Thanks,
Vinay.

[ilugd] New project on FLOSS

2008-02-21 Thread Vinay Sreenivasa
Hello all,

Greetings from IT for Change!

ITfC (IT for Change) is a non-profit organisation located in India. ITfC
envisions a society capable of, and comfortable with, innovative and effective
use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a tool, to further
goals of social change. We undertake research, advocacy and field-action projects
in the area of ICTs for development.

Wanted to share information on a new on FLOSS, which is being
coordinated by the European Union. This project will look at increasing FLOSS
uptake in various countries, including India.

This project called “FLOSS Include”, will be carried out by a project team of
research institutes, government agencies, private companies and non-governmental
organizations in 9 countries - Argentina, Cambodia, China, Ghana, India, South
Africa, Spain and the UK. The consortium is led by UNU-MERIT, a joint research
and training centre of United Nations University and Maastricht University in
the Netherlands and includes among other organizations, Canonical Ltd the
sponsors for Ubuntu.

In India, the FLOSS Include project will carry out an in-depth analysis of the
technical, business and socio-political needs for the growth of FLOSS use,
deployment and development in the target regions. In the larger effort,
partners will implement FLOSS solutions, tools and services to ensure they are
cost-effective and practical for each environment. The FLOSS Include aims to
ensure a lasting impact beyond the project duration. A project fact sheet is
available at http://flossinclude.eu

ITforChange (http://www.itforchange.net/) and Sarai, India
(http://www.sarai.net/) are the two organizations in India, which will be a part
of this project. As part of ‘FLOSS Include’, ITfC will focus on FLOSS and the
public sector and will study the role of public sector agencies in producing,
organizing and stimulating production of FLOSS, including using FLOSS for public
administration, and sharing of FLOSS applications among public sector bodies.
Much of social processes, like public delivery of health, education and
livelihood support services have a central role for public authorities and hence
public systems have a crucial role in pushing FLOSS. Currently commercial,
proprietary software is often preferred and the project would study the contexts
for FLOSS being used in a larger way for Public administration.

We will also study government polices for FLOSS an area where which tends to
often have a pro-industry / commercial software orientation and not much support
or enthusiasm for FLOSS. In addition, since the issues of standards have a
strong connection to the role of public sector - both as a major bulk user of
software and being able to set default standards through using them in public
application , and through direct policy interventions – the study will have a
strong focus on the interoperability and open standards aspects in our research.

The project activities have been kick-started now and the project is currently
in progress.

Thanks,
Vinay Sreenivasa

 Hi,
I was trying to view a website in Hindi when i encountered this problem, a
 website: http://manaskriti.com/kaavyaalaya/kaho_kaise_ho.stm
using unicode for hindi text: displays improperly on my Firefox 2.0.0.6.
 The
problem is that the matras are placed incorrectly, then the adhe akshar
appear with a halant and not as aadhe akshar(technically correct but its
 difficult to read that ways).

 ैE.g. लेिकन renders as लेकिन

I went through this page on wikipedia
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Multilingual_support_%28Indic%29
and did everything that was suggested under Debian(Im using Ubuntu 7.04)
 and
also under GNOME. I also checked that my firefox is compiled with
 --enable-pango option .

Still it doesnt render properly, any clues on what could be causing the
 problem?

 Thanks

'General' Category. Wouldnt it be better to shift these to something
like 'Programming' or 'Development' - I count 8 papers in general
including things like python programming and php templating that
would fit in this category. Maybe club it with scientific and
research tools - 2 papers there, both of which would fit into
 programming or development.
