Re: [ilugd]: London University doesn't permit Linux/Unix
LOL. I agree. Any person on a network who runs Linux and knows what can be done with it is a security threat. My cable networkwalla agreed when I showed him what standard software on Linux (ethereal, nmap etc.) is capable of doing. These admins are much more at ease with clueless windoze programmers around. - Sandip At 09:35 AM 10/24/2002 +0530, you wrote: Interesting... http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=hl=enlr=ie=UTF-8selm=7d532ada.0209180542.6503efb6%40posting.google.comrnum=1prev=/groups%3Fq%3Dg:thl1127390037d%26dq%3D%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26selm%3D7d532ada.0209180542.6503efb6%2540posting.google.comframe=right I'm moving into King's College (London University) student accomodation at the moment. They give out LAN connections, which is great! But to my horror, I find this text in their terms and conditions: You may not run any Unix operating system since they can represent a serious risk to network integrity. Any student found running a Unix system (e.g. Linux) connected to the College network will have that system disconnected. snip --- Sandip Bhattacharya Puroga Technologies Work: sandip @ puroga.com, http://www.puroga.com Play: sandipb @ bigfoot.com, http://www.sandipb.net To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject header. [ilugd]: ecom copyright!
this gets even funnier. the whole modern world's approach to copyright, so-called 'intellectual property' and patents is a big farce. but who has the guts of saying out loud: the emperor has no clothes :-( LL San Diego Company Owns E-Commerce http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/10/23/197234 Kernel Panic writes Looks like you can now be [0] sued for using graphical and textural content on your e-commerce site. As everyone who has an e-commerce site does. A [1]company in San Diego was granted one [2] patent for using graphics and text to sell things on the web and [3] another for accepting information to conduct automatic financial transactions via a telephone line video screen. They have started their crusade with smaller companies that do not have the financial resources to fight back so as to build a war chest to take on larger companies like Ebay and Amazon. One [4]site has taken the offense after becoming one of the first defendants of 50 [4]companies so far. Curiously it appears the company was formed in March of 2002, less than a month before filing for the first [5]lawsuit. Would you care to contrast it with the non-modern world's approach? And I am confused about the farce aspect. As far as I know, farce has 2 meanings: 1 Light Drama, usually comic by exageration 2 Mockery of a real object Which were you meaning? There is also a third meaning, stuffing, ususally before roasting a turkey, by I don't think that applies here. -- Sanjeev To unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in subject header.
