Hello,
40 GB hard disk gives problem if u select
autodetect in bios.It sometimes detects wrong number
of cylinders.You can go to bios and select the
cylinder numbers given(written) on the hard disk and
also select the sector info etc... as given on hard
disk .

Do you have a VIA motherboard? Just add the kernel boot-time option
 ide=nodma and boot?

 does any can tell me is there something  wrong with hdd.
 i have heard that 40GB hdds give problems

I know a few people who are using such disks and not facing problems.
