Re: [efloraofindia:29316] Ficus for ID

2010-03-10 Thread Usha Desai
I agree this is not Ficus exasperta, for in Ficus exasperta, the figs are
yellow ,solitary and stalked[see Dineshji's pictures]Easiest way to identify
it is by feeling the leaves which are rough. To me this looks like
F.bengalensis. Usha Desai

Could be some other *Ficus* species; comments are sure to come.

Not *F. exasperata*; the fruits and leaves in the posted photos say so.
My impression: the fuits are lime green (almost yellow) with a bright
yellow tip ripening to maroon, not seen in clusters as seen here, leaves
during fruiting are scant ... many a times, none.
Here is what I believe to be *F. exasperata*:

Thanks for your responses. Dr.Rajendra, will check and let you know about

Another hint from the nursery owner - it is a small tree found in South
India where it is called the 'Paneer Tree' because its fruit is soft like
paneer.
Also, did not observe the flowers having any particular aroma.

This could be a dwarf form of Guettarda speciosa, called as 'Panneer maram' in

Could be some other Ficus species; comments are sure to come.

Not F. exasperata; the fruits and leaves in the posted photos say so.
My impression: the fuits are lime green (almost yellow) with a bright yellow
tip ripening to maroon, not seen in clusters as seen here, leaves during
fruiting are scant ... many a times, none.
Here is what I believe to be F. exasperata:

I was in Kanha NP, Madhya Pradesh last week and noticed that the Common
Rattle Pod, *Crotalaria retusa* dotted the entire landscape of this
national park, from the meadows to the Sal (Shorea robusta) forest except in
the higher reaches such as Bamhnidadar which is at 2900 feet msl.

Another common flower was the Indian Squirrel Tail, *Colebrookea
oppositfolia *forming the shrub layer in the fringes of the Sal forest.
 (Ref:

The Lion's Ear, *Leonotis nepetiifolia *with its golf ball size spikey
flower pod was very common in the open areas. (Ref:

Re: [efloraofindia:29359] ¿ Peristrophe / Diclipter a ? sp. DV14FEB10-1147

2010-03-10 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Dear Tanay
If you want to see an authentic specimen of Peristrophe paniculata, please
to to this link of Dinesh Valke:

http://images.google.co.in/imgres?imgurl=http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2197/1964869546_a2b082110a.jpgimgrefurl=http://flickr.com/photos/91314...@n00/1964869546usg=__cnxiudH8DqTCgrb5wyUj8GElm5M=h=375w=500sz=127hl=enstart=7sig2=a4jA2UB24iZr6XLxCe_Y4Aum=1itbs=1tbnid=bt5XFaOFGBWDSM:tbnh=98tbnw=130prev=/images%3Fq%3DPeristrophe%2Bpaniculata%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1ei=55mXS6yMLYutrAfXqam3Cg

This plant was earlier also confused with Peristrophe, untill Nayan ji
pointed out to be Dicliptera, and I found Dicliptera bupleuroides in Manali.
Plants of Dicliptera tend to be more robust with flowers more or less
clustered, whereas in Perstrophe paniculata they form spreading panicle and
are on long slender stalks.

Re: [efloraofindia:29368] Azadirachta indica syn. Me lia azadirachta 'निंबारा'

2010-03-10 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Satish ji
Melia azadirachta and Azadirachta indica are same, latter being the correct
name now. The plant uploaded by you is clearly Melia azedarach with
bipinnate leaves and more importantly mauve coloured flowers. Former is
known as neem and latter Darek (Hindi), Mahanim or Gora neem. The plant
uploaded by Swagat seems to have bipinnate leaves and fruits which resemble
Melia azedarach, but after I had second look at the plant, it has whitish
flowers (like neem) but much more denser. It may turn out to be none of
these two species. The margin of leaflets also suggests that.

Re: [efloraofindia:29396] Solanum viarum?-020210-PKA1

2010-03-10 Thread R. Vijayasankar
I agree with you Yazdy ji, S. torvum is commonly used as vegetable (Chundai
/ Sundai kai in Tamil). But it is also fact that the unripe fruits of S.
viarum (= S. khasianum var. chatterjeeanum
http://www.jstor.org/pss/4110004) also
used as vegetable as i mentioned earlier. My colleague Dr.Ravikumar had the
opportunity to taste this which was offered by Malayali tribes in TN during
a bot. survey.

The picture in question is surely not S. torvum as you know.

The first is smaller and is green in colour about 12 mm in diameter,
whereas the latter is around 30 mm in diameter is light green with
white design all round. The leaves are very much similar.

I tend to doubt T. chrysotricha (now Handroanthus chrysotrichus) because of the
apparent glabrous foliage. It looks closer to H. umbellatus (T. umbellata), but
even that I'm not certain of.

I forwarded to others who may be of assistance. If I hear any response, I'll
forward.

Though I have not attempted personally, I have it on good authority that P.
ellipticum, at least the pink form, strikes easily from cuttings. White form
should behave similarly. If not, it can be grafted on most other tree-type,
similar Malvaceae, including Pachira.

[efloraofindia:29406] Re: Ficus for ID

2010-03-10 Thread Devi
Thanks to all who replied to my ID request. Yesterday i had a look at
the tree again and found two or three small aerial roots just
beginning to grow. So I guess the majority opinion of Ficus
Bengalhensis is right. The tree does'nt look very much like the Ficus
B. that you usually see around.

Regards,
Devi

Could be some other Ficus species; comments are sure to come.

Not F. exasperata; the fruits and leaves in the posted photos say so.
My impression: the fuits are lime green (almost yellow) with a bright yellow
tip ripening to maroon, not seen in clusters as seen here, leaves during
fruiting are scant ... many a times, none.
Here is what I believe to be F.
 exasperata:http://www.flickr.com/search/?s=intw=91314...@n00q=Ficusexasperata;...

His some particulars are given below:
He has completed his M.Sc in Botany last year from Presidency College,

Sharing with eflorasindia.this picture of Zornia diphylla , taken last
year near Bangalore.

It is found in grassy clearings after monsoon showers begin and is
distinguished by the two digitate leaflets. ,
