As per FOI link, picture is shown from VOF, Uttarakhand:

On 1 December 2010 21:13, Gurcharan Singh singh...@gmail.com wrote:

Agreed that all the three species under discussion can be considered. I
have seen many specimens of C. macrorhiza (syn: Lactuca macrorhiza) and
found it to be mostly a prostrate or decumbent plant with distant lower
leaflets ((segments) and large terminal lobe. Both C. cyanea (syn: Lactuca
hastata) and C. macrantha (syn: L. macrantha are taller plants like ours but
 C. cyanea has much larger (and sometimes only) terminal lobe with hastate
 base and distinctly petiolate leaves.

 http://plants.jstor.org/specimen/bm35619

Our plant seems to have sessile (whatever leaves are visible) with
triangular-ovate terminal lobe, and may well fit C. macrantha, but II wonder
plant growing from Nepal to Sikkim may have extended to neighbouring region
 or not.

Most of specimens on the net with only flower-heads don't help much as all
the three species may have purple to blue flowers. Three are hardly any
 photographs with clear leaves.

The present work traces the journey followed, giving a brief account of
   the
contribution of all the major civilizations to the development of
   medicinal
systems. The book further speaks about several prominent personalities
of
each medicinal system who helped in shaping the system. Each
civilization
recorded their medicinal knowledge in some or the other form that are
   called
the ‘Herbals’. This work gives a compilation of herbals from the
Mesopotamians until Renaissance period. Thus provides an insight into
medicinal practices of each period. These herbals were the source of
medicinal knowledge and were relied upon by medicinal practitioners
until
the nineteenth century.

Nineteenth century led to the discovery of substances such as alkaloids,
glycosides, resins, volatile oils, gums, tannins, etc collectively
called
secondary metabolites. A small fraction of these constituents have been
isolated and explored for their medicinal properties. Secondary
   metabolites
is very vast topic hence, selected categories of secondary metabolites
   have
been discussed. This book also discusses in brief, their biosynthesis
   along
with their role as pharmaceuticals.

Though Allopathy remains as the mainstream in health care, herbal
   medicines
have been main source of primary healthcare in many nations. These
herbal
medicines are the synthesis of therapeutic experiences of generations of
practicing physicians of indigenous systems of medicine for over
hundreds
   of
years. Each country, each region, each tribe has their own traditional
health care system. The practice, the belief and the basis of a few
traditional systems, prevalent in each continent are discussed providing
   a
brief insight into these traditional systems of medicine.

This book also includes monograph of 120 plants. Scientific data along
   with
traditional uses are included in these monographs to highlight their
   usage
as mainstream pharmaceuticals.

People give very peculiar names to the plants based on their
perception and sometimes these names continue their use in local
language. Some times they even relate it to religion by attaching some
god's name to it. Thats a way of local nomenclature. It does help a
lot at time whereas creates confusion too. One such example is HABE
AMRI, which is a broken, molested, marathi word for HABENARIA and
nothign else according to me.

The plant growing in Howrah Botanic Garden which is called Mad Tree is
Chrysophyllum cainito. Bengalis also call it rasogulla tree, I imagine
why dont they call it Gulab Jamun tree as the fruits are dark bluish
brinjal or brown like a Gulab Jamun.

Pterygota alata diversifolia is called Mad Tree or Buddha's coconut!!

Please help me id the tree whose varied leaves I have photographed.
Photography is not permitted in the Agri-hort garden, hence I have snapped
  some of the fallen leaves.
Someone has given me a hint that the leaves belong to a tree called the
  Mad Tree , SOMETHING diversifolia.
Please help me identify the SOMETHING
  Thanks,
  Padmini Raghavan.
