You may please visit http://www.dpreview.com and go for a through
research before making a decision. (I did the same for more than 16
months to know the trend, performance and picture clarity). I
personally suggest you to go for Panasonic Lumix series compact
camera. Panasonic is great with clarity resolution and all, when you
 need to take macro pictures.
Even point and shoot Panasonic cameras are doing fantastic job.

You may please consult Dr Dinesh Valke who uses a Panasonic DMC-G1
 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/5593762443/). This camera
is little expensive than that of your budget, I gues (about 40k). But
if you can get the same from the USA you can save around 6-10k, I am
 sure.

[efloraofindia:75967] Re: Flora of Arunachal Pradesh- Namdhapa near Miao- Herb 4 for Id- JM

2011-08-04 Thread Smilax004

This is not Lindernia ciliata, for sure as Manudev pointed out, L.
ciliata has sessile leaves and corolla is white with pink throat.

I think it is the same species that I had posted few days back

http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/9c92e4f1281d83a1/dda4c0b95e27066a?lnk=gstq=Lindernia#dda4c0b95e27066a

The leaves of L antipoda is elliptic obovate and is about 2.5cm. Here,
if my assumption is correct, the leaves are more than 3cm long.
Further, the key in The flora of the Tamil Nadu Carnatic (page 1083)
says that calyx margin serrulate in L antipoda
Calyx margin entire for Lindernia ruellioides

I think this is Lindernia ruellioides even the one that posted on
August 2. (The flora of the Tamil Nadu Carnatic (1983), page 1092)

Giby

Neil ji,

Thank you very much for the valuable information. It seems that you are
collecting a good data on phenology as well. That is great!

Thanks for sharing valuable information on the early flowering. Do you think
that the early flowering is because of early onset of monsoon and good
amount of summer showers.

Further, the series of pictures are very nice depicting most of the
characters of the pretty climber. The amplexicaul leaves (leaves
having lobes that
completely surround the stem.) are clearly visible in the second and last
pictures.

Thank you very much for the valuable information. It seems that you are
collecting a good data on phenology as well. That is great!

Thanks for sharing valuable information on the early flowering. Do you
think that the early flowering is because of early onset of monsoon and good
 amount of summer showers.

Further, the series of pictures are very nice depicting most of the
characters of the pretty climber. The amplexicaul leaves (leaves having lobes
 that
completely surround the stem.) are clearly visible in the second and last
 pictures.

Looks like J. betonica. Were bract of all the plants green or you
could see some individuals with white bracts (a specialized leaf or

  Dear All:

I was given to understand that best Oroxylum indicum, or Shonyak of

I did not expect them in gangetic plains.

So I was very surprised when in peripheral vision out of running cab window

on a 2 foot tall sapling I had seen in a herbal garden in Jamnagar about a
decade ago... here was a stand of Oroxylum indicum on the hot humid and
 almost
at or even a foot or two below sea level Gangetic plains on the
 northern fringes of Calcutta...

I stopped and took some pictures, and picked up a fallen flower from

could not see or take pictures of the trunk or the bark etcbecause of a
huge wall and could not pick up more of the fallen flowers because no
sooner had I picked up a flower and spread it open that a cycle riding
plains clothes person came and very authoritatively shooed me away.. saying
it was a restricted area I could not understand how can a public
footpath with two bus-stops within 50 feet of where I was standing be a
 restricted area...

Anyway, when I got home I had some dark and one acceptable picture of the
leaves...Pods had previously opened and most likely dispersed its seeds
away..the day before it had rained very heavily. I did not see any on
the footpath below in that quick 2 minute sojourn...

You may please visit http://www.dpreview.com and go for a through

personally suggest you to go for Panasonic Lumix series compact

 need to take macro pictures.

But
if you can get the same from the USA you can save around 6-10k, I am
 sure.

  Dear All:
I was given to understand that best Oroxylum indicum, or Shonyak of
Ayurvedic medicine comes from those growing at the Himalayan foothills, and
I did not expect them in gangetic plains.

So I was very surprised when in peripheral vision out of running cab window
I spotted some sword- like pods, and on second look saw leaves similar those
on a 2 foot tall sapling I had seen in a herbal garden in Jamnagar about a
decade ago... here was a stand of Oroxylum indicum on the hot humid and
 almost
at or even a foot or two below sea level Gangetic plains on the
 northern fringes of Calcutta...

I stopped and took some pictures, and picked up a fallen flower from
 the PUBLIC sidewalk...
could not see or take pictures of the trunk or the bark etcbecause of a
huge wall and could not pick up more of the fallen flowers because no
sooner had I picked up a flower and spread it open that a cycle riding
plains clothes person came and very authoritatively shooed me away.. saying
it was a restricted area I could not understand how can a public
footpath with two bus-stops within 50 feet of where I was standing be a
 restricted area...

Anyway, when I got home I had some dark and one acceptable picture of the
leaves...Pods had previously opened and most likely dispersed its seeds
away..the day before it had rained very heavily. I did not see any on
the footpath below in that quick 2 minute sojourn...

 Details: *Oroxylum indicum*
 Family: Bignoniaceae
 Genus: Oroxylum
 Species: * Oroxylum indicum*
 Sanskrit : अरलु aralu, श्योनक shyonaka
 Gujarati and Marathi : टा यिटू tayitu, टेटु tetu
 Hindi: शल्लक shallaka
  Santhal tribals call it: Rengebanam

The open flower shows 5 stamens …. See recent other threads about
 Shyonak/oroxylum indicum this week …

*** Root bark and seeds are medicinal…
Root bark is an important constituent of Dashmool…. Very important in
normalizing the gut related immune functions and improving the health of GI
mucosa… normalizing it… many many more… recent research points to
possible anticancer properties of the kwath of dashmool and of the seeds…
much remains to study by astute modern clinicians….

 Neil ji,

Thank you very much for the valuable information. It seems that you are
collecting a good data on phenology as well. That is great!

Thanks for sharing valuable information on the early flowering. Do you
think that the early flowering is because of early onset of monsoon and good
 amount of summer showers.

Further, the series of pictures are very nice depicting most of the
characters of the pretty climber. The amplexicaul leaves (leaves having lobes
 that
completely surround the stem.) are clearly visible in the second and last
 pictures.

  Dear All:
I was given to understand that best Oroxylum indicum, or Shonyak of
Ayurvedic medicine comes from those growing at the Himalayan foothills, and
I did not expect them in gangetic plains.

So I was very surprised when in peripheral vision out of running cab
window I spotted some sword- like pods, and on second look saw leaves
similar those on a 2 foot tall sapling I had seen in a herbal garden in
Jamnagar about a decade ago... here was a stand of Oroxylum indicum on
the hot humid and almost at or even a foot or two below sea level
Gangetic plains on the northern fringes of Calcutta...

I stopped and took some pictures, and picked up a fallen flower from
 the PUBLIC sidewalk...
could not see or take pictures of the trunk or the bark etcbecause of
a huge wall and could not pick up more of the fallen flowers because no
sooner had I picked up a flower and spread it open that a cycle riding
plains clothes person came and very authoritatively shooed me away.. saying
it was a restricted area I could not understand how can a public
footpath with two bus-stops within 50 feet of where I was standing be a
 restricted area...

Anyway, when I got home I had some dark and one acceptable picture of the
leaves...Pods had previously opened and most likely dispersed its seeds
away..the day before it had rained very heavily. I did not see any on
the footpath below in that quick 2 minute sojourn...

 Details: *Oroxylum indicum*
 Family: Bignoniaceae
 Genus: Oroxylum
 Species: * Oroxylum indicum*
 Sanskrit : अरलु aralu, श्योनक shyonaka
 Gujarati and Marathi : टा यिटू tayitu, टेटु tetu
 Hindi: शल्लक shallaka
  Santhal tribals call it: Rengebanam

The open flower shows 5 stamens …. See recent other threads about
 Shyonak/oroxylum indicum this week …

*** Root bark and seeds are medicinal…
Root bark is an important constituent of Dashmool…. Very important in
normalizing the gut related immune functions and improving the health of GI
mucosa… normalizing it… many many more… recent research points to
possible anticancer properties of the kwath of dashmool and of the
seeds… much remains to study by astute modern clinicians….

  Dear All:
I was given to understand that best Oroxylum indicum, or Shonyak of
Ayurvedic medicine comes from those growing at the Himalayan foothills,
and I did not expect them in gangetic plains.

The plant was grown in the pond in Herbal Garden, Punjabi Bagh, is now
almost vanishing as pond is drying up and other weeds are taking over. It
(whorled pennywort) is often grown in aquaria.
By the way now the correct name is H. verticillata according to Kew Plant
List.

2011-08-04 Thread Giby Kuriakose
This is most probably be Sapindus laurifolius new name Sapindus trifoliata
of Sapindaceae family. The only concern to me is the split drupes.
Usually split drupes are not seen in S. laurifolius and this has mentioned
as a key character of S. emarginatus by Gamble. But the lanceolate acuminate
leaves are characteristics of S. trifoliata (in S. emarginata the leaves are
oblong emarginate).

Giby
