Tanay thank you that explains some confusing papers I had seen in last few years about the id... but not being a taxonomist I had no way of judging.. thanks Usha di = On Mon, Jun 4, 2012 at 9:49 AM, Tanay Bose tanaybos...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Dinesh Ji. Hydrocotylaceae is considered as a synonym of Araliaceae.Under the current taxonomic status Hydrocotylaceae has been demoted to a sub-family level (Hydrocotyloideae) under Araliaceae.I think the Centella asiatica has an indefinite position hence has been simultaneously placed under the Apiaceae Araliaceae. Now there is another problem, when I check the systematic postion under Wikipeadea, I was stunned to see it has been placed under Mackinlayaceae according to APG II System of classification. Mackinlayaceae (formerly Mackinlayoideae) is considered a sub-family under the order Apiales placed in the Euasterids II clade. Based on the phylogenetic tree published Tolweb (see the link below) Mackinlayaceae, Apiaceae, Araliaceae, Pittosporaceae and Myodocarpaceae are indicated by a polytomy which means the phylogentic relation between the families are not well resolved, hopefully in future better molecular studies will help in resolving the problem.I also check with bunch of papers on phylogeny of Apiaceae where it has been clearly stated that Centella has a variable position in the tree based on the different approaches used for the tree construction. I am attching one such papers (see the highlighted lines). It matures in about 50 to 60 years by when its girth at the breast height is about 1 to 1.5 m. Its bole (main trunk) is generally straight and cylindrical, attaining a height of nearly 3 to 4 m. The branches spread in all directions by virtue of which its crown can be trained into a beautiful inverted dome like an umbrella. When fully grown up, the total height of the tree comes to nearly 10 to 15 m. In less favorable climate and or unfavorable environment, however, it has a lesser growth and may attain a somewhat crooked form. In still worse environment it can even remain stunted like a shrub. Many thanks Tanay for clarifying taxonomical status of *Centella*. According to Flora of Pakistan Cordia dichotoma ( 5-8 x 1.5-3.0 cm ) differs from Cordia myxa ( 6-12.5 x 43-8.2 cm) in the narrower and thinner leaves, which are not subcordate at the base and smaller drupes; also calyx is ribbed and hairy in former, not in latter. Fwd: [efloraofindia:118577] Campsis confusion: looking for Campsis grandiflora
Forwarding again for any assistance in the matter please. -- Forwarded message -- From: Gurcharan Singh singh...@gmail.com Date: 2 September 2011 12:18 Subject: [efloraofindia:79177] Campsis confusion: looking for Campsis grandiflora To: efloraofindia indiantreepix@googlegroups.com, Tabish tabi...@gmail.com Genus Campsis has been confusing me a lot for quite some time. Traditionally two species of this genus are recognized as common garden trumpet creepers: *Campsis grandiflora*: leaflets 7-9; glabrous beneath; 4-7 cm long, paler green; calyx 5-lobed to middle; flowers orange to scarlet, corolla tube nearly one and half times as long as calyx, limb nearly 5-6 cm across; capsule 10-15 cm long, obtuse at apex, without beak. *Campsis radicans*: leaflets 9-11, pubescent beneath especially along midreib and main veins, dark green above; calyx shortly 5-lobed, lobes less than 1/3 the tube; flowers orange with scarlet limb, 2-3 times as long as calyx, usually less than 4 cm across; capsule cylindric-oblong, 7-12 cm long, keeled along sutures, beaked at apex. I have been following the specimens of Campsis in Delhi, Kashmir, California and other places and frankly have not been able to locate a true sample of C. gandiflora. Most of the samples found in Kashmir and Delhi which look like C. grandiflora do not bear fruits, flowers fall off when mature and number of leaflets varry from 7-11 (-13). This sterile hybrid is actually C. X tagliabuana, a hybrid between C. radicans and C. grandiflora. Both specimens at at FOI (C. radicans as well as C. grandiflora) i think belong to this hybrid species, which is propagated by cuttings. *I would be extremely happy if any member is able to find and can upload a true specimen of C. grandiflora (7-9 leaflets, leaflets glabrous beneath, calyx divided up to middle, corolla tube 1 1/2 times as long as calyx, more important it produces fruits which are 10-15 cm long and without beak at tip)* * * -- Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018. The leaves are commonly used in the Yoruba agbo infusion given in draught and used as a wash for fever, children’s convulsions, etc. Sap from the fresh leaves is a mild laxative for children (5, 11–13). The plant (probably the leaves) is used in Gabon as a laxative and a febrifuge (15). The leaf, usually after pounding with that of Newbouldia laevis (Bignoniaceae) and a guinea pepper, is tied on the head for headache (5).The root, like the leaves, is considered toxic in Makuyuni District of Tanganyika (9, 10) but no application is ascribed to it.
