 Hi Dinesh Ji.
Hydrocotylaceae is considered as a synonym of Araliaceae.Under the current
taxonomic status Hydrocotylaceae has been demoted to a sub-family level
(Hydrocotyloideae) under Araliaceae.I think the Centella asiatica has an
indefinite position hence has been simultaneously placed under the Apiaceae
Araliaceae. Now there is another problem, when I check the systematic
postion under Wikipeadea, I was stunned to see it has been placed under
Mackinlayaceae according to APG II System of classification.
Mackinlayaceae (formerly Mackinlayoideae) is considered a sub-family under
the order Apiales placed in the Euasterids II clade. Based on the
phylogenetic tree published Tolweb (see the link below) Mackinlayaceae,
Apiaceae, Araliaceae, Pittosporaceae and Myodocarpaceae are indicated by
a polytomy which means the phylogentic relation between the families are
not well resolved, hopefully in future better molecular studies will help
in resolving the problem.I also check with bunch of papers on phylogeny of
Apiaceae where it has been clearly stated that Centella has a variable
position in the tree based on the different approaches used for the tree
construction. I am attching one such papers (see the highlighted lines).

That perception is wrong. In Vedas, one name is for one plant only. But it
was misinterpreted. For long people believed Centella to be Brahmi but

Lasura is a fairly fast growing species. It matures in about 50 to 60 years by
when its girth at the breast height is about 1 to 1.5 m. Its bole (main trunk)
is generally straight and cylindrical, attaining a height of nearly 3 to 4 m.
The branches spread in all directions by virtue of which its crown can be
trained into a beautiful inverted dome like an umbrella. When fully grown up,
the total height of the tree comes to nearly 10 to 15 m. In less favorable
climate and or unfavorable environment, however, it has a lesser growth and may
attain a somewhat crooked form. In still worse environment it can even remain
stunted like a shrub.

Beach Cordia is a small evergreen tree with a broad, dense, wide crown, that
typically reaches 7–10 m in height. The canopy may spread 8 m across, often as
wide as the tree is tall. The bark is pale gray and furrowed or flaky. Beach
Cordia bears clusters of orange flowers at the ends of its branches and in leaf
axils. The large, funnel-shaped flowers are 2.5–4 cm long and broad, with 5-7
slightly wrinkled petals. The short-lived flowers are scentless. Alternately
arranged leaves are broadly egg-shaped to elliptical with blunt-pointed ends.
They are light green, shiny above and dull below, 8–20 cm long and 5–13 cm
wide. The tree bears fruits that are round or egg-shaped balls 2–3 cm long,
hard and woody when mature. They grow in clusters and turn brown and fall from
the tree as they ripen. Beach Cordia fruits all year long; green and ripe
fruits are often found on trees at the same time the trees are flowering.

Many thanks Tanay for clarifying taxonomical status of *Centella*.

Pankaj, ... gathering names for *Centella asiatica* and *Bacopa
monnieri*was interesting as well as confusing in context of their
association with
the name *brahmi*.

Have not yet put *brahmi* as Sanskrit name for *Centella asiatica*
(syn. *Hydrocotyle
asiatica*).
Would have neither put it for *Bacopa monnieri* - WHY ?
because:
1) none of the *Sanskrit dictionaries* that I referred, have mention of *Bacopa
monnieri* OR any of its synonyms - almost leading me to think it is not a
native of our country.
2) on the contrary, *brahmi* is put for several plants - - - surprisingly
neither *Bacopa* NOR *Centella* NOR their synonyms among them.

Hoping someone among us provides clarity about *brahmi*.

The phrase In Vedas, one name is for one plant only is not convincing me.
There are countless generic names in Sanskrit (not sure about Veda) -
that is - there are names shared (for various reasons) by several plants - *
brahmi* is one such. Here are contents of *brahmi* page of Sanskrit,

Many many thanks Giby ji and Pankaj for validating *brahmi* in Sanskrit in
context of *Bacopa* vs *Centella* - will amend my notes accordingly.
Other plants - *Clerodendrum indicum*, *Enhydra hingcha*, *Ruta
graveolens*do have
*brahmi* as one of Sanskrit names,

Many thanks Tanay for clarifying taxonomical status of *Centella*.

Pankaj, ... gathering names for *Centella asiatica* and *Bacopa monnieri*was
interesting as well as confusing in context of their association with
 the name *brahmi*.

Have not yet put *brahmi* as Sanskrit name for *Centella asiatica* (syn.
 *Hydrocotyle asiatica*).
Would have neither put it for *Bacopa monnieri* - WHY ?
 because:
 1) none of the *Sanskrit dictionaries* that I referred, have mention of
 *Bacopa
monnieri* OR any of its synonyms - almost leading me to think it is not
 a native of our country.
 2) on the contrary, *brahmi* is put for several plants - - -
surprisingly neither *Bacopa* NOR *Centella* NOR their synonyms among
 them.

Hoping someone among us provides clarity about *brahmi*.

The phrase In Vedas, one name is for one plant only is not convincing
me. There are countless generic names in Sanskrit (not sure about Veda) -
that is - there are names shared (for various reasons) by several plants -
*brahmi* is one such. Here are contents of *brahmi* page of Sanskrit,
 compiled as of now:

Although most Indian specimens of C. myxa are now attributed to C.

This an annual in the northern climes, end of season in the fall seeds are
set, oil from which is very high in polyunsaturated oils even more so than
the evening primrose oil... but Borage oil never got acceptance as wide as
it deserved because of PYRROLIZIDINE ALKALOIDS in the plants roots and
leaves . These alkaloids are toxic to mammals livestocks and man..
leading hepatic cellular damage and venous occlusion and related
disorders... ( comfrey is more toxic than borage but association seems to
have stuck in the 20th century)...OIL is safe, yet..

*BORAGE *was celebrated in ancient times , as far back as Pliny the elder
who wrote that it brings joy...

add afew flowers to tankards of beer and see..I guess.

Originating in the north africa around the Mediterranean including
Morocco the arab traders carried it to Europe and they in turn brought it
to European countries and the Americas, now its known to grow in all over
the world, garden escapes are said to be seen in some dry arid patches..

I love borage for its heavenly blue flowers and it gladdens me just to
 look at it...

modern enthusiasts who use flowers for culinary purposes use it for its
beauty in ice cubes, in ice cream, sugar it to preserve and decorate cakes,
and best... float them in teas...

These pictures are from a demonstration garden of herbs in the american
 Southwest..

According to Flora of Pakistan Cordia dichotoma ( 5-8 x 1.5-3.0 cm ) differs
from Cordia myxa ( 6-12.5 x 43-8.2 cm) in the narrower and thinner leaves,
which are not subcordate at the base and smaller drupes; also calyx is
ribbed and hairy in former, not in latter. I wonder if both can be found in
India.

Subject: [efloraofindia:79177] Campsis confusion: looking for Campsis
grandiflora
To: efloraofindia indiantreepix@googlegroups.com, Tabish
tabi...@gmail.com

Genus Campsis has been confusing me a lot for quite some time.
Traditionally two species of this genus are recognized as common garden
trumpet creepers:

*Campsis grandiflora*: leaflets 7-9; glabrous beneath; 4-7 cm long, paler
green; calyx 5-lobed to middle; flowers orange to scarlet, corolla tube
nearly one and half times as long as calyx, limb nearly 5-6 cm across;
capsule 10-15 cm long, obtuse at apex, without beak.

*Campsis radicans*: leaflets 9-11, pubescent beneath especially along
midreib and main veins, dark green above; calyx shortly 5-lobed, lobes less
than 1/3 the tube; flowers orange with scarlet limb, 2-3 times as long as
calyx, usually less than 4 cm across; capsule cylindric-oblong, 7-12 cm
long, keeled along sutures, beaked at apex.

I have been following the specimens of Campsis in Delhi, Kashmir,
California and other places and frankly have not been able to locate a true
sample of C. gandiflora. Most of the samples found in Kashmir and Delhi
which look like C. grandiflora do not bear fruits, flowers fall off when
mature and number of leaflets varry from 7-11 (-13). This sterile hybrid is
actually C. X tagliabuana, a hybrid between C. radicans and C. grandiflora.
Both specimens at at FOI (C. radicans as well as C. grandiflora) i think
belong to this hybrid species, which is propagated by cuttings.

*I would be extremely happy if any member is able to find and can upload a
true specimen of C. grandiflora (7-9 leaflets, leaflets glabrous beneath,
calyx divided up to middle, corolla tube 1 1/2 times as long as calyx, more
important it produces fruits which are 10-15 cm long and without beak at
tip)*

sometimes used in Ghana as chewsticks (12, 13).Animals are said to browse
the foliage in Sudan (2, 3), but in the Makuyuni District the leaves are
held to be toxic (9). The leaves are commonly used in the Yoruba agbo
infusion given in draught and used as a wash for fever, children’s
convulsions, etc. Sap from the fresh leaves is a mild laxative for children
(5, 11–13). The plant (probably the leaves) is used in Gabon as a
laxative and a febrifuge (15). The leaf, usually after pounding with that
of Newbouldia laevis (Bignoniaceae) and a guinea pepper, is tied on the
head for headache (5).The root, like the leaves, is considered toxic in
Makuyuni District of Tanganyika (9, 10) but no application is ascribed to
it. A decoction of the roots and leaves is taken in Ghana for infantile
tetanus (5, 13), and for dysentery (Field fide 13).In Ivory Coast a
bark-decoction is taken for amenorrhoea, and the decoction when left to
cool separates to a supernatant layer of oil which is applied to
skin-affections (4).The fruit is edible (3, 13) and is used in Ghana as
bait for trapping birds (5, 13).A trace of alkaloid has been detected in
 the plant (? leaves) (1).

like low-grade sandpaper.[4] Anacua is a partial evergreen, replacing some
of the leaves in early spring. Abundant white flowers[2] form in panicles
or cymes[5] 5–7.5 cm (2.0–3.0 in) in length at the ends of twigs,[4]
making trees appear to be covered in snow when in bloom from spring to
summer.[2] Flowers are 8 mm (0.31 in) wide and have 5 corolla lobes. The
fruits are spherical[4] drupes[6] 8 mm in diameter and yellowish-orange.[4]
The drupes contain two stones, each with two seeds.[4] In addition to being
edible by humans, the drupes are eaten by mammals and birds[2] such as the
Clay-colored Thrush.[7] The lifespan of an Anacua is at least 50 years.

The fruit is a yellow or pinkish-yellow shining globose or ovoid drupe
seated in a saucer-like enlarged calyx. It turns black on ripening and the
pulp gets viscid. Indian cherry grows in the sub-Himalayan tract and outer
ranges, ascending up to about 1500 m elevation. It is found in a variety of

deciduous forests of Western Ghats and tidal forests in Myanmar. In
