Re: [efloraofindia:225164] Over to Churdhar tour for 8 days

2015-06-01 Thread Gurcharan Singh
A very enjoyable and useful trip, and as Balkar Singh says one of the most
difficult treck of his career. Only five members Balkar ji, Nidhan ji, Anil
Thakur ji, Sunoj ji and Viplav made it to the top of nearly 3700 m high
peak. Myself and Dr. Virdi (from Zoology) came back after climbing 5 km
from Nohradhar (partly due to our age +70, reluctance of our spouses to
stay without us, and more importantly my pacemake. It would have been too
much). Anurag, Smita and two friends of Anurag from Zoology (Smitha and
Medha). Climbed half way and decided to stay at a midpoint to come back
next day. The Visit to Plante Paradise Nursery near Solan and Nauni campus
were highlights of the tour.Would soon share our plants.

 Dear members
Our tour to Churdhar peak in Himachal Pradesh organised by Balkar is
starting tomorrow morning. Other members have already reached Panipat, we
will join them, as distance from Delhi to Panipat is only 90 km. We will be
back on 29th May evening. Hope to bring back some new and interesting
plants. We may not interact in these days as we are going to remote areas
 with possibly hardly any internet.

 Gelyon village temple, Nohradhar

Have read about and seen photographs of oldest deodar (Cedrus deodara)
trees in India particularly in Lahaul District of Himachal Pradesh and
Kanasar in Chakrata , reported to be as old as 1588 years. They are really
tall, but none seems to match the massive tree within the premises of
temple at Gelyon about 3 km from Nohradhar in Himachal Pradesh, a site for
famous festival. The tree has huge trunk split into three, with combined
width of around 20 feet, with central trunk somewhat decayed, the cavity
being used for display of idols, pictures and religious offerings. The
crown though not very tall covers a huge area of the temple. Locals say it
is 5000 years old. May be lesser but really old.

Thank you sir.
I will be visiting Agumbe this month. I'll return with exact measurements
and further details of this plant. It grows roadside in the village there.
Maybe the descriptions might help then or we could make our own key between
the two species and the varieties then.

FoC says *P. stocksii* is synonym of *Isodon lophanthoides* var.
*lophanthoides*
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2taxon_id=21798. FBI
says *P. stocksii* Hook. f. possibly a form of *P. striatus*, but is a
larger plant. FBI further informs Heyne's specimen
http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K001067870, though
very small, is this one.
Type specimen of the above can be viewed -

Please wait for pro.

Meanwhile, can you please throw some light on other aspect? -

FoC says Lamiaceae flowers are bisexual. Then why in its illustrations it
shows female flower in another species -

2015-06-01 Thread A.Sinha
Ajinkya-ji, Rawat-ji,
Thanks ! i would have never found this id, and it is my first intro. to
Uriticaceae.

Pilea microphylla (Artillery plant )it is, matches exactly with FOI images
and description from IFAS Univ of Florida http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fp479.
Which also explains the unexpected common name for such a small plant

A multitude of minute, lime green leaves on short, arching stems gives
artillery plant a fine-textured, fernlike appearance (Fig. 1
http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/LyraEDISServlet?command=getScreenImageoid=6661758).
Growing only 8 to 12 inches tall and quickly forming spreading clumps up to
two feet wide, artillery plant makes an attractive tropical ground cover.
The common name is derived from the forcefully ejected pollen from the
rather inconspicuous flowers on this brittle and succulent plant.

Wondering if this could be one of the tiniest flowering plants ever.

Thanks
ASinha

 Dear Sir,
 Thank you for your response.
I have clicked pictures of this plant and as here it is midnight, the
close ups are not very well lighted, yet enough to check details.
These trees are about 10 m tall, Habit photo may help you look the bark
which is grey, with superficial, vertical fissures.
Leaves are on the branch tips, wth serrated margin and long petiole
(almost as long as or even longer than lamina). the close ups have leaves
those are smaller in size otherwise, on trees, there are leaves bigger than
 those seen in picture.
Fruits are fleshy, green with milky latex, slowly they turn dry, Each
locule wth one or two seed. Seeds covered with thin, brown, papery skin
 covering nner, off-white grain.

Hope this will be of some use to you, yet, if needed can send some more
 pictures in few days.

 With anticipation
 -Jitendra

fruits 1.5 or 2 cm large, they cannot be the same species, not even as
 variety.
The number of size of the petiolar glands is very constant within a
genus, in all genera I studied. Falconeria will always have two glands on
the petiole. If the glands in your plant are united to form a single gland,
I suspect that it cannot be Falconeria.
If you can send an image, I can perhaps tell you more.
