Subject: Is this Allium semenovii Regel?
To: "J.M. Garg"

I am posting this fine image scanned in from a slide taken by the late Oleg
Polunin during
one of the final pony-treks he led for a group of plant enthusiasts who
travelled
from near Sonamarg into the Suru Valley in early 1980s. I believe it was
taken in Ladakh territory.

I came in as his last-minute replacement as leader of a trek in Miyah
Nullah, Lahaul in 1985 (sadly, he
passed away whilst we were in India).

Strangely enough, I was born just a few hundred metres away from where he
lived for many years whilst
a botany master at Charterhouse Public School in the UK. Polunin was given
leave (in addition to the
summer school holidays to join mountaineering expedition, as non-climbing
naturalist in the Karakoram
and Nepal when it opened up to expeditions in the late 1940s and early
1950s - he joined the Polunin,
Sykes & Williams Expedition to Nepal in 1952). Wilfred another master at
Chaterhouse, got leave to join
mountaineering expeditions. You will remember that it was 1953 when
Everest was climbed for the first time
from the south through Nepal - the early attempts to climb Everest pre-WWII
were from Tibet, to the North.
At that time, Nepal was closed to foreigners.

Allium is a difficult genus identification-wise.

Stewart recorded Allium semenovii from N.Pakistan and Ladakh including
Pensi La & Suru
plus in Kashmir including Sonamarg & Zoji La - so this all fits with where
Oleg photographed it.

He states that Wendelbo considered that this and Allium atrosanguineum
differ in colour.
Allium semenovii is always yellow.

Dickore & Klimes do not have Allium semenovii in their Ladakh check-list
(2005).

Flowers of the Himalaya record it from open slopes & wet places @
3000-4000m from Pakistan to
Himachal Pradesh.

There is no record of this species in 'Flora of Lahaul-Spiti'.

There is an image (unfortunately out-of-focus, so of limited use and thus
impossible to comment on
the flowers:

*What do other members think. Provisionally at least, this represents
another first entry for eFI.*

2017-01-13 Thread chrischadwell...@btinternet.com
I have just been looking at A NEW EXPERIMENT and the link to Lepidium and
thus this page.

Please note that Lepidium densiflorum is a common & widespread in North
America but has never been recorded from Ladakh and his
HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be found there.

Dickore & Klimes list 4 species of Lepidium in the most up-to-date
check-list for Ladakh.

I shall look into this further.

[efloraofindia:261324] Re: ID Confirmation

2017-01-13 Thread chrischadwell...@btinternet.com
Sorry, I do not currently think these images are of Pulsatilla wallichiana.

Once again, the posting from Kashmir provides no general location nor
altitude - which is a serious omission.

ASSUMING, the specimen was photographed in the Kashmir Valley, this does
NOT tally with the known distribution of P.wallichiana.

Furthermore, the foliage and involucre does not fit.

Stewart recorded P.wallichiana from N.Pakistan (incl. Baltistan) and Ladakh
but NOT the Kashmir Valley.

My initial thoughts are that the images are of an Anemone probably either
A.falconeri or A.biflora which Stewart did record from the Kashmir Valley
(though I think there is now some questioning of whether the true A.biflora
is found in Kashmir). I shall be checking further.

In the mean-time, it will be useful for references purposes if I post the
two images I have available (taken on my behalf) of what I do consider
to be Pulsatilla wallichiana.

[efloraofindia:261323] Re: Sh. Chris Chadwell- 1st Runner up Star Expert of 2016

2017-01-13 Thread chrischadwell...@btinternet.com

May I thank you all for your compliments - much appreciated. As is my
way, my apologies for yet another lengthy response!

I have a great deal of affection for your country being very much a friend
of India's. I was inspired by the late Prem Nath Kohli who established
P.Kohli & Co. in Kashmir back in 1928 - he was always more of a research
scholar than a businessmen; the hospitality shown by Mrs Urvashi Suri, one
of Kohli's daughters, who took over as Proprietor, (and her family
members), was crucial to me continuing to visit the Himalaya beyond the
early 1980s, enabling me to build-up first-hand knowledge of the region's
flora.

I am sure all members wish this data-base and the google-group not just to
be one of the largest in the world but the BEST – being of International,
indeed 'world' class, quality-wise. Yes, the aim should be to cover more
completely, all genera and species found in India. However, it is not just
about quantity, most importantly, an objective should be to enhance and
enrich contributions. We all benefit from collaboration both within the
Indian sub-continent and Internationally. Being able to embrace a wide
range of inputs is a strength as is the capacity to accept constructive
criticism - a necessity if Science is to progress.

Mr Garg deserves a great deal of credit for "keeping me on board". He has
shown wisdom seeking to do what is in the long-term interests of eFI and
the study of Indian flora.

Quality digital photography has the potential to transform the study of
flora world-wide but will take time for this to be recognised and fully
implemented. eFI has the opportunity to set an example for the world's
botanical community to follow.

Much is talked about 'plant conservation' with numerous reports having been
written all over the world. I stress that accurate & reliable
identification of plants, whether in the Himalaya, elsewhere in India or
other countries is ESSENTIAL, if the world's flora is to be genuinely
conserved. Yes, there is urgency but the data/findings need to of the
highest-standards. From this follows the necessity for extensive field
surveys to be undertaken. Digital photography CAN play a major role here,
with visiting foreigners and amateur botanists interest in plants to be
"taken advantage of".

ALL members of this google-group who can get out-and-about to photograph
wild plants in India (plus bordering countries) subsequently posting
quality images are in a position to contribute to increasing coverage,
family, genus and species-wise and should continue to be actively
encouraged to do so.

Professor Norm Deno, a retired Professor of Chemistry at State College,
Pennysylvania, USA, stated (after undertaking extensive experiments into
seed germination) "TO SOW A SEED, IS A NOBLE DEED'.

ALL those who helped found and develop eFI to-date have helped "SOW A SEED"
in terms of improved understanding of Indian flora. Let us hope we can all
work together to ensure this SEEDLING* reaches both the
FLOWERING and FRUITING stages during the years to come - * or given that
things began as 'Indiantreepix', perhaps it would be more fitting to speak
of eFI being at the SAPLING stage of an 'OAK' having grown from an 'ACORN'
- and naturally, given my speciality, it would have to be a 'Himalayan' Oak!

Forwarding again for Id confirmation or otherwise please.

Some earlier relevant feedback:
As per *GRIN* &
*WCSP* ,
*Stachytarpheta* *indica* (L.) Vahl does not have range in
India.

Different book references as below points to *Stachytarpheta jamaicensis*
(I..) Vahl S. indica auct. non (L.) Vahl, being found in India:
*An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India*

 By K. M. Matthew (1995)
*Flora of Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India*

 (2000)
*Flora of Ranga Reddi District Andhra Pradesh, India*

By T. Pullaiah, M. Silar Mohammed (2000)
*Flora of Madhya Pradesh: Chhatarpur and Damoh*

By G. P. Roy, B. K. Shukla, Bhaskar Datt
*Floristic Diversity of Assam: Study of Pabitora Wildlife *

 (2003)
