It is a pleasure to share my limited knowledge in this forum as I feel that
this will become a standard repository for future workers to identify an
Indian plant with accuracy.
Regards and thanks.

2017-01-31 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,
Dinesh Valke ji is the 1st Runner up Interactive Person of the last month
with 95 messages.
He has no parallels. He founded efloraofindia site & gifted it to us. He
always had a great vision & pioneered so many new ideas on efi or elsewhere.
He has taken aim of getting names of plants in vernacular languages as well
as in their own scripts & he has been tenaciously working in that direction
for as long as he has been with efi, if not more.
The result of his efforts is always seen in efi, though at a slow pace as
it is a very time consuming work. Messages in this month by him are related
to this work along with a lot of postings and identification help to others.
My hat off to Dinesh Valke ji!!!

2017-01-31 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,
Sh. Chris Chadwell is the Star Expert of previous month with 237 messages
mostly dealing with the identifications.
He is the Expert contributor about Ladakh & Himalayan plants.
His web-site (http://www.shpa.org.uk/) introduces some of his activities
including a serious interest in Ladakh flora over a period of 36 years.
Indeed it is fair to say he has devoted my life to the study of Himalayan
flora, particularly in what I would describe as the borderlands of Western
Tibet.
He is making a worthwhile contribution to our site for species from Ladakh,
the Western Himalaya in general and the other parts of the Himalaya to a
lesser extent - which will compliment the existing expertise of those who
post and make suggestions identification-wise. His familiarity with the
flora lies primarily in mountain plants.
I thank Chadwell ji for your wonderful contributions to efloraofindia.

Dear members,
Saroj Kumar Kasaju is the Most Interactive Person of last month having
scored a triple century (318 messages) with his beautiful uploads &
interactions. His postings were mainly from Nepal (areas still deficient in
efi) including many new additions to efi. Quality of his uploads is
also wonderful showing almost all aspects of a plant along with nice
photography. He has a great knowledge as far as flora of Nepal is concerned.
He continued to mesmerise us this month also like the last few months since
July'16, for which he has been consistently becoming Most Interactive
Person every month.

the only two photos (practically one) and the aspects seen may not help
reach ID to species level. The tiny flower is just about 4 mm (including

I attach an image taken as a slide on the Rohtang Pass back in 1989 which
shows good detail of the stamens and stigma. Shall post habit and habitat
shots
of this another time - grew on a mossy boulder.

I have quite a number of images of the 'West Himalayan Blue-Poppy' from
Kashmir, Ladakh and H.P. incl. a good set from the Sach Pass, which I plan
to post
at some point.

I am surprised at the confusion with M.horridula, as this species has not
been
recorded NW of Nepal.

To: "J.M. Garg"

I have just posted about a Cotoneaster specimen thought to be C.microphyllus
posted by Saroj from Nepal. I explained that he MUST wait until I have
sent these
images to J.Fryer for determination. I am still (AS ANTICIPATED) waiting
to hear
from her as to comments about the images of other Cotoneasters I sent by CD.

*It is REALLY IMPORTANT for members to accept, however frustrating it is,
that*
*AT TIMES it is NOT possible to RELIABLY identify (i.e. DETERMINE) a plant
from*
*the photos sent. There can be a number of reasons for this.*

*In such circumstances the ONLY correct course of action is to thus put
Cotoneaster*
*sp., or Elaeagnus sp. or Clematis sp.*

*IF those attempting to identify said plants are CONFIDENT it is "Close to"
or "Similar to",*
*there MIGHT be justification in putting AFF. and naming the species.*

*It is UNWISE and UNHELPFUL to SPECULATE (GUESS) TOO MUCH. MANY reading
these*
*speculations, especially if SUGGESTED by a 'senior' person will ASSUME
this is the actual*
*species. This CONTRIBUTES to confusion and muddles, as such guesses are
OFTEN incorrect.*

*Sorry but I still have LOTS of the eFI data-base to go through (or come
back to), so further*
*UNCERTAINTIES and CORRECTIONS are INEVITABLE*

*I repeat that IT IS NOT ALWAYS possible to NEATLY identify a plant to
SPECIES level. This is*
*NOT a sign of INCOMPETENCE on my part (or that of others) but realisation
of the complexities*
*of the variation involved.*

*There is in the UK (and it seems in India) a MISTAKEN belief that PLANT
IDENTIFICATION is quick*
*and easy with each plant READILY "PIGEON-HOLED" into a species.*

Oh, if ONLY things were that SIMPLE and QUICK!

And on occasion, one cannot even tell for sure which GENUS, even FAMILY, it
belongs to.

PREMATURE/HASTY naming leads to FREQUENT MISIDENTIFICATIONS.

Nice advisory to the researchers working in subalpine and alpine zones. It is
often said that weather is not bad, the clothing makes it bad or good in
mountains.
While going through this I remembered one of my friend who because of his bad
protection gear nearly escaped snow blindness. Work in high altitude is only
possible when one is ready for all situations of weather. AND field works in
high altitudes are often less and restricted to summers only; one has to
utilize each and every opportunity which may be denied in lack of proper
clothing.

LEAST important consideration
To: "J.M. Garg"

I have hesitated to comment much for the whole of the group, knowing that what
I shall be saying islikely to come as a surprise, perhaps a shock. It is not
easy to find the correct words to challengeconventional wisdoms, conventions or
behaviour.
May I repeat my offer to provide INDIVIDUAL advice, communicated in private,
with any members wishingto improve their plant photography.  The solutions are
there but will not be "quick & easy". I ask a lot ofquestions and my 'students'
(no matter what age or seniority) will need to exhibit effort & dedication,
over notjust days but months and years. If that has not been a deterrent, you
are most welcome to contact me individually, allowing advice IN PRIVATE.
Returning to advice which would apply in almost all cases, I shall begin with
what I actually by THE CAMERABEING THE LEAST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION.  Yes, one
needs a camera of a certain standard but THESE DAYS the quality of lenses in
even modest COMPACT cameras are of a REMARKABLE standard.  With application
andsome skill, EXCELLENT results can be achieved.  One does NOT need a LARGE,
expensive, top-of-the-range camera.Indeed, for many such cameras are MUCH MORE
TROUBLE THAN THEY ARE WORTH and I would advise AGAINSTpurchasing one!
However, what matters MOST is NOT your camera but SAFETY and COMFORT.  One
needs appropriate FOOTWEAR and CLOTHINGto be able to spend the DAY
photographing plants.  This is particularly important for those venturing into
the HILLSand MOUNTAINS. Though the principal applies anywhere in the
countryside.
See the attached image taken by my eldest son several years ago in the UK (I
use a smaller camera now) attired in waterproofs, walking boots, woolly hat and
fingerless woolly gloves with my rucksack on my back, glasses on a cord round
my neck.I felt warm enough and comfortable.  The waterproofs meant I would not
have to RETREAT if there was any heavy rainfor part of the day.  I was on a
slope on a hill amongst chalk grassland which is rich in flowers.
On my visits to Indian sub-continent, I spend the vast majority of my time
wearing WALKING BOOTS!!  This applies not just when I am trekking (camping) in
the mountains or days out exploring e.g. from Gulmarg up to Khelanmarg
orAphawat; from Narkanda to Huttoo in H.P., above the Rohtang Pass, also in
H.P. or on Phulchoki mountain aboveGodawari, Nepal.  Also when walking around
Srinagar, Manali, Shimla or Kathmandu.
They provide ankle-support whilst the soles grip the surface better.   This
reduces slips and ankle twists -either of which have the potential to ruin not
just a day out but WEEKS of potential BOTANIZING.
TRAINERS (or similar footwear) do NOT provide good ankle-support and often
their soles grip poorly.  How UN-FASHIONABLEI AM but I could not care less!
I also use a walking stick.  I started this in the 1980s (when I was still in
my twenties - young, fit and strong) andremember buying one that served me well
for years when leading a botanical tour in Pakistan in 1987.  Morerecently, I
have used strong folding walking-sticks (which can be stored in my small day
ruck-sack when notrequired).
In addition to helping me avoid falls on SLIPPERY ground (the rocks and steps
at lower levels can be especiallyslippery), the stick helps me negotiate
steeper ground than I otherwise could AND can enable me to reach lowerbranches
of trees/tall shrubs/climbers, enabling me to take close-ups of their flowers
or fruits.
This brings me to other clothing.  Having water-proof CAGOULES (jackets)

[efloraofindia:262971] Re: Child in Manali looking at Flowers of the Himalaya

2017-01-31 Thread C CHADWELL
Yes, Polunin & Stainton deserve considerable credit as do the others who
contributed their photos:
Sir Barclay Bart, Len Beer, Dr C. Grey-Wilson, A.B.C. Harrison, A.Huxley,
R.Lanacster, D J McCosh, D.Sayers,G.Smith, L.H.J. Williams (who participated,
like Bill Sykes in 1950s expeditions to Nepal with Polunin & Stainton).
But one must not forget Ann Farrer for the line-drawings/botanical
illustrations - an aspect of guides oftenforgotten.
I was approached a few years back about the possibility of preparing and
co-authoring a popular guide to WestHimalayan Flowers.  I IMMEDIATELY raised
MAJOR problems.
As there is no up-to-date flora of the NW Himalaya and the floras which have
been published are unreliable, it isIMPOSSIBLE to arrive at a SATISFACTORY
summary.
The guides to flowers in Europe or parts of the US are based upon RELIABLE
floras - which must come first.
I am not prepared to work on/complete a poor-quality publication.
There is also the OBSTACLE of devoting YEARS of effort to a publication and
paying for its publication with a highstandard of printing and colour.
Flowers of the Himalaya was PUBLISHED in India with the colour reproduction
REASONABLE.   The colour reproductionin almost all botanical books in India
since then has been POOR to DREADFUL.
I don't understand why such INFERIOR standards are accepted.   EVERYONE who
buys them should DEMAND a refund.
How can 'Flowers of the Himalaya' back in 1983 be of a reasonable standard yet
since then other printers in India producesuch poor work.
It should NOT be acceptable.

Chris Chadwell

During one of the two botanical tours I led to H.P. in the mid-1980s,I walked
up to Old Manali from the guest-house my group were staying inwith the doctor
on the tour and took this slide.
I had a copy of 'Flowers of the Himalaya' with me which I showed to thelocal

The older boy holding the book had a baby brother on his back - who clearlywas

[efloraofindia:262970] Re: Codonopsis in the borderlands of Tibet Part II - Look out for Codonopsis obtusa

2017-01-31 Thread C CHADWELL
This may well be the case but it is clear to me that some of the images of a
Codonopsis takenin Baltistan represent a separate taxon.
Whether this constitutes a variety or subspecies of C.clematidea or a separate
species, is forothers to decide.
I wonder if they have this photographic evidence to-hand (cf. just dried
pressed specimens).
Need MORE evidence.

Thanks, Chadwell ji, for interesting insights though both WCSP & Catalogue of
Life consider Codonopsis obtusa (Chipp) Nannf. as a synonym for Codonopsis
clematidea (Schrenk) C.B.Clarke

I draw attention to this and other preceding images and a following of what
Iconsider to be Codonopsis obtusa taken in Baltistan:
http://photos.v-d-brink.eu/Flo ra-and-Fauna/Asia/Pakistan-new /i-zrxFG8n
Marijin's close-ups of the interior of the corolla are invaluable in helping
separatethis species from Codonopsis clematidea.
Also so the entry in the UK Plant Heritage site for Codonopsis:

http://www.codonopsisplants.co .uk/
Compare with my postings about Codonopsis clematidea.
So what do we know of Codonopsis obtusa (Chipp) Nannf.?  It was
previouslyconsidered to be a variety of Codonopsis ovata.
Stewart knew it from Kurram and Chitral @ 2650-3300m.   Though no records
forBaltistan or Ladakh.
Nasir in Campanulaceae for Flora of Pakistan covers C.obtusa.  He adds a record
from Dir,giving a distribution of Turkestan and Afghanistan.  Apparently a full
discussion on the variationpattern of this species is given in Flora Iranica
(which I cannot readily access).
The features he uses to distinguish between C.obtusa and C.clematidea are
inadequate andin parts, incorrect.  It is entirely possible some of the
specimens he examined named as C.clematideawere in fact, C.obtusa.   Though I
would not expect C.obtusa to be found in the Kashmir Valley butbotanists and
photographers should look out for it in Ladakh.
There are records of C.ovata for Ladakh but these are probably
misidentifications for C.clematidea (Dickore & Klimes ONLY list C.clematidea in
Ladakh) though one should now check for C.obtusa, usingthe characteristics
shown in this posting.
I seem to recollect a record for C.obtusa in Ladakh but cannot find it at
present.
If it can grow in Baltistan then why not Ladakh.  Given that Indian botanists
have struggled todistinguish between C.clematidea, C.ovata and C.obtusa, when
re-examined or fresh specimensare collected, the CORRECT distribution of these
3 species may be resolved.
Note the trilobed stigma (in correct C.clematidea it is entire) plus more open
shape of the flowers -not 'bell-shaped' as in C.clematidea.  Plus the markings
in the throat are different.   Unfortunately, thephotos do not show the calyces
well - one shot suggests they end up being reflexed as in C.clematideawith the
lobes being markedly different to C.ovata.
I do not have any images myself of C.obtusa.  As far as I know, I have never
come across the plant in the wildor cultivation for that matter.
PLEASE NOTE THAT QUALITY DIGITAL CLOSE-UPS, IN GOOD FOCUS, ARE IN SOME RESPECTS
SUPERIORTO EVEN QUALITY PRESSED SPECIMENS, REVEALING DETAILS NOT AVAILABLE TO
HERABIUM TAXONOMISTS.
I HAVE LONG TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS OF PLANTS TAXONOMIST BEING ABLE TO
EXAMINE FRESH,LIVING SPECIMENS, IN ADDITIONAL TO DRIED PRESSED ONES.
THE NEW RULES & REGULATIONS INCL. THE NAGOYA PROTOCOL WILL MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO
IMPOSSIBLEFOR SPECIALIST SOCIETIES, PLANT CHARITIES AND INDIVIDUAL GROWERS TO
GAIN ACCESS TO SPECIES FROMTHE WILD INCL. THE HIMALAYA.  THIS WILL DAMAGE PLANT
CONSERVATION AND DO NOTHING TO HELP PROTECTGENUINELY 'RARE' SPECIES.
That leaves Part III - Codonopsis ovata.  I shall wait a while before 'sharing'
my images and information about this.
Leaving all the above aside, this posting, combined with my one on C.clematidea
is ANOTHER example of just what eFI can do to IMPROVE UPON and CORRECT existing
knowledge and understanding of Indian flora through quality close-up digital
images.   So much potential.
And wonderfully, the EVIDENCE is there for ALL to see!!!

Whilst the closer images, with more of them are welcome - taken in January
whichis especially pleasing.   They may not be sufficient to enable me to
'determine' the specimen.
Having images of the leaves are useful, especially the underside as well.
However, it can be difficult to decide without viewing the flowers.  ANY image
whether offlowers, fruits or foliage is informative but characteristics of the
fruits are often less well studies.
I SHALL take a look at my reference material to see if I can narrow things down
but it MAYstill require views of the flowers.  So PLEASE obtain these, IF you
are in a position to later this year.
I realise this all seems rather involved, having taken two sets of photos now,
however, for MOSTgenera, there are few (IF ANY) references for the fruits of a
genus and OFTEN no way of reliablydistinguishing between them on the basis of
fruits alone.

I quite understand but can I REQUEST all photographers to search for accessible

camera which can take macro-shots.  MOST digital compacts have wonderful lenses
these days with close-up facilities.  They are light-weight,fitting easily into
a short pocket (see my recent post about photographing plants any month of the
year).
It is great that members post images and I wish to ENCOURAGE not discourage but
unless the imagessubmitted show the necessary detail/characteristics, it can be
very difficult to impossible to identify to species.
The same situation exists for traditional pressed specimens for depositing in
herbaria - unless one can see theoften ESSENTIAL parts of the plant then a
reliable identification often cannot be performed.
Furthermore, such images tend not to help others RELIABLY identify the species
when checked/compared with.
ONE of the objectives/aspirations of eFI is not just to identify the plants
images of which have been sent in butto have a selection of images for EACH
species which show CHARACTERISTIC/DIAGNOSTIC features.
In the past it was only economic to take one or two shots per plant, which
tended to be 'general' views.
Even such excellent guides as 'Flowers of the Himalaya' is now so dated
photographically and OFTEN doesNOT show DIAGNOSTIC characteristics.
Nowadays one can take as many shots per plant as one likes - I OFTEN take
15-20, sometimes 30.
Returning to "inaccessible" flowers.  Yes, particularly in forests, flowers of
trees, tall shrubs and tall climberscan be difficult to reach.
Furthermore, there can be 'risks' in such places.  On my first visit to Nepal,
I encountered Giant HimalayanStinging Nettles and leeches for the first time -
which make plunging enthusiastically into thick vegetation lessappealing!  On
my one and only visit to Meghalaya I came alarmingly close to a snake (could
not tell if it wasvenomous or not and I was alone at the time)
So care needs to be taken but there is no escaping the need to get amongst
vegetation and tolerate suchunwelcome guests as leeches.
One of the advantages of concentrating upon plants at higher altitudes in
Trans-Himalaya is thatthere are no such creatures to avoid!

Sometimes it is NOT POSSIBLE to fully identify plants beyond genus.  A
properDETERMINATION cannot reliably be arrived at - for various reasons and
thusmust simply be accepted as sp. ONLY.
In the future when a genus is revised well or someone with specialist
knowledgetakes a look at the photos, they MIGHT be in a position to name it -
though theinformation provided by the photos may not be sufficient.
To name plants TOO speculatively is A MISTAKE and CAN ONLY LEAD TOFURTHER
CONFUSION.
However frustrating, this MUST be accepted.
IF somewhere like Kew receives either an INADEQUATE pressed specimen orthe
genus is not well-known enough, they will either just put sp. or perhaps
aff.indicating "having affinities to" a particular species but NOT saying it
belongs tothat species.
As I regularly state, plants are variable things and we CANNOT always
NEATLYpigeon-hole them into existing species.
To ACCEPT this situation is a sign not of incompetence but COMPETENCE.
A LOT of trouble is caused by too many guesses and speculations as to
speciesnames - MANY images of plants on the internet both in cultivation and
the wildare MISIDENTIFIED.
As are a SIGNIFICANT proportion of those in Floras of different parts of the

I based my comments upon the treatment of Eleagnus within Flora of

I have greater confidence in these than 'Flora of Pakistan' and Flora of China.
Yes, Stewart listed E.umbellata Thunb. based upon Hooker in FBI.  He
gaveE.parvifolia Wall. ex Royle as a synonym.  He recorded it from N.Pakistan
andKashmir @ 900-3000m incl. Tangmarg.
However, Flowers of the Himalaya has E.parvifolia with E.umbellata auct.
non-Thunb.as a synonym - this means E.umbellata NOT authored by Thunberg.
The Enumeration Vol 3 (1982) is consistent with the treatment in Flowers of the
Himalaya.
Both give a distribution through to SW for this species.  The latter does NOT
list E.umbellata Thunb.
As for Flora of Bhutan Vol 2 Part I (1992) this includes E.parvifolia Royle
giving as a synonymE.umbellata sensu FBI non Thunberg.
I also happen to have a copy of 'Flora of Japan' by J.Ohwi  (in English)
published by the SmithsonianInst., Washington DC in 1984 - my 'heaviest' flora
@ 3.4kg (28 x 22 x 8 cm).
This includes E.umbellata Thunb. - common & variable OFTEN CULTIVATED in
Hokkaido, Honshu,Shikoku & Kyushu - it does not mention it occurrence
elsewhere.  3 varieties are given incl. var. hortensis.
You do get DIFFERENCES of interpretation amongst taxonomists.  Clearly
Elaeagnus is not an easy genusidentification-wise.
I do not know if there has been a recent revision of the genus Elaeagnus?
I have seen examples of taxa in the NW Himalaya which were assigned to
'Japanese' species whenthere had been a misunderstanding of nomenclature i.e. a
species name used by more than one author.I shall comment about this in a
separate post.
IF, a world authority on Elaeagnus exists, their thoughts would be welcome.

[efloraofindia:262931] Re: Senecio chrysanthemoides in Ladakh

2017-01-31 Thread chrischadwell...@btinternet.com
Thanks very much for drawing my attention to the article 'Death sentence on
taxonomy in India' - BRAVO to the authors for "speaking up and out".
Much Needed.

I shall be commenting further - on what is SUCH a serious situation,
especially ON TOP OF 70 years of botanical isolation since Indian
Independence. It
is noteworthy that both Pakistan and Nepal have collaborated
Internationally MUCH better than India, such that despite a FRACTION of the
manpower
and resources of India, their 'Himalayan Flora' is known to a higher
standard than India's - the same can even be said for the decidedly
isolated Kingdom
of Bhutan! Those devising and implementing such "rules and regulations"
have NO interest or concern about the study & conservation of Indian's
flora -
which can only suffer FURTHER.

Looks like we are heading into an era when the likes of Donald Trump rule.
IGNORANCE RULES OK!. The idea that such measures help PROTECT India's
flora is a NONSENSE. Their ONLY concern is not MISSING OUT on their cut
of any POTENTIAL PROFITS..
