[efloraofindia:400157] Re: Araceae ID from Nepal- 1

2021-09-26 Thread Peter J MATTHEWS
These variegated Colocasia spp. are really difficult to identify based only on
the variegation. This is likely C. affinis as suggested, but both C. fallax and
C. affinis are variable in their display of variegation, and we need to
consider the possibility of as yet undescribed species also having similar
variegation.

I have noticed that the stolons of C. fallax are very wiry, with fibrous inner
core that gives them tensile strength. This certainly helps with their
attachment to rock crevices in rocky, high velocity mountain streams. The much
thicker stolons of C. esculenta are fragile and easily break, and then float,
which assists dispersal along streams and in floodplains.

Alocasia macrorrhiza is much bigger and has no peltate leaf. Alocasia
navicularis does, but has a peculair V-shaped rim. I think the best possible ID
would be Remusatia vivipara. But indeed with Aracaea, spathes are needed to be

Leaves confined to the base only, no cauline leaves, only the peduncle is
long and branched, leaves hairy. I was looking for Teraxacum officinale. It
is looking similar but leaves glabrous, lobes pointed and pattern entirely
different, head also a little larger.

 Some earlier relevant feedback:
I am having doubts after perusing details at *Vicia sativa* L. subsp.
 *sativa*

But also could not find any match at comparative images at Vicia
 ‎

 from me

Does not match with other sp. listed also.
 Thank you.

 Some earlier relevant feedback:

According to a book Field Guide to common Trees and Shrubs of East
Africa by Najma Dharani this Acacia is named as Acacia tortilis and the
common name is Umbrella Thorn, Swahili name is Mgunga, Ol-gorete &
ol-tepesi in Maasai and Etirr (Ateso Tororo).
 Regards,
 Promila

 efi page on Vachellia tortilis

I have little knowledge about Acacias.
But the Acacia tortilis seen here, in Oman don't have straight pods
 like the ones seen here.
I have posted Acacia tortilis on our group before.
This was a huge tree, but low in height.
Adding a picture of the main trunk.
 Aarti

Tree's common name is Umbrella Thorn and it is almost flat like an
umbrella. The bark is said to be rough brown-red. It is indigenous and
 wide
spread in African savanna. The shape of the tree is just like yours and
 the
book mentioned its name as Acacia tortilis.
 Promila

Its pale brown pods are twisted and some times curled into rings.
 Promila

To me pods look different at

Acacia Species seen on the way to Masai Mara Game Reserve.
Unfortunately, I have only one picture.
May be that's the reason I didn't post some of these earlier.
