Dear Garg Ji and All
Can we plan a two day plant exploration programme in June 3rd or 4th Week.
The suitable destination is Chakrata. Around 300 Kms from Delhi. In a Hotel
we usually stay, 30 people can be accomodated. Approx expenditure per
person per day may be approx 1200-1400 including all meals morning evening
Tea etc.
2 or 3 days are enough for exploring nearby areas.
Thanks and Regards

*5 years with eFI - A Path Finding Journey*

An adolescent villager, entering his second year of BSc. Forestry
Hons., with no clear visions about his future, knew only one thing very
well. It was the joy he got from exploring jungles, finding plants and
insects, taking pictures of them and naming them systematically.

I joined the group in October 2017, as a second year undergraduate,
thanks to Anil Thakur sir and Nidhan Singh sir who helped me and guided me
to join eFI Google group. I always had great curiosity of finding,
identifying and remembering plant names since my latter schooling days.
Though I was not from a pure Botany background, being taught basic Plant
Taxonomy, Systematics and Identification courses, I still had a basic idea
about plants, mainly trees identification, given my forestry background
albeit without a faculty specialising in the field of Plant Taxonomy. As a
result of this curiosity, I would often get my plants identified on a
couple of Facebook groups, where many of our group members were active
 participants.

As far as I remember, my first post was that of an Impatiens sp., that
I posted in the first week of October 2017. It was later identified in our
group as Impatiens scullyi Hook.f. a new addition to Flora of India. This
got me interested to actively take part in the discussions happening in the
group. I fondly remember the time when Mimulus strictus was identified
after a long interesting discussion and also Calanthe davidii, which indeed
turned out to be a rediscovery and a new record to the state flora. Both of
these plants could not be identified on any Facebook groups or platforms
for that matter, but thanks to the great number of plant family
experts/specialists present in eFI group and particularly always active,
never tiring and hard working Garg ji, that identification of species is no
 longer a task.

When plants like Impatiens scullyi and Calanthe davidii got identified
in our group, I worked relentlessly on them so as to get them published as
research papers in good journals which ultimately boosted my confidence to
take up Plant Systematics as my career. One can tell how much the eFI group
has influenced me from the fact that after I completed my BSc. Hons.
Forestry, my career took a positive turn as I delved into the world of
Plant Systematics. I am now pursuing a Masters in Life Science (Plant
Systematics by Research) thanks to the motivation, guidance and help I got
from many members of our eFI group. It's been about 5 years since I became
a part of this amazing thrilling journey of our unique family of plant
enthusiasts/lovers, while also getting the opportunity, in December 2019,
to become a moderator of our group.

However, in the last two years, my postings have decreased
significantly, given the academic work pressure and field exploration.
Nevertheless, whenever I get a chance to go to the fields, my eyes are
always in search of species that are not present in our eFI group. The
happiness I get from finding new additions for our group is one of a kind,
putting me short of words to describe it. Now that the group

We have to teach every course of Botany in the colleges. However, I
love to teach taxonomy, physiology (my Ph.D. specialization), genetics,
ecology and economic botany. I started preparing PPTs for class teaching in
2008 by taking images from the net. When preparing a PPT of the Orchidaceae
family, I was fascinated by the peculiar beauty of the flowers of
 *Habenaria
intermedia*. After noting the places from where it was previously
recorded in FLORA SIMLENSIS and SHIMLA FLOWERS, I started visiting those
places along with my non-botany friends. One day, on my way back home, I
suddenly came across a single plant of *Habenaria intermedia* on a
hill slope. To my dismay, only floral buds were there. So, I decided to
come back after one week. On my next visit to that place, I
was heartbroken as that plant was no longer there. It might have been
plucked by someone. I never came across this species for the next two
 years.
One day, I was wandering in search of plants and our Computer Science
teacher was accompanying me. Luckily, we came across a large patch of
approximately 100 plants. I was spellbound on finding what I had been
searching for for the last 3-4 years. I could not contain my excitement and
spoke aloud to the plant, "Eureka, Eureka; I have finally traced you."
Later on, I came across an ardent Nature Lover, Santosh Thakur, who works
in the forest department of Himachal Pradesh. Together, we have explored
extensively in the nearby areas. We have marked many places where this
species flowers in the month of July. Similar to this, every click has its
 own story.

Very beautiful pics.
Its strange that no one has done any pollination studies on this species.
Its a good species to work on. Large flowers and easy to observe. Hint is,
one needs to make observations both in sunlight and in dark!!

[efloraofindia:424858] Ashutosh Sharma: Story of efloraofindia to celebrate 15 years of its completion on 17.6.22

2022-06-05 Thread Ashutosh Sharma
*5 years with eFI - A Path Finding Journey*

An adolescent villager, entering his second year of BSc. Forestry Hons.,
with no clear visions about his future, knew only one thing very well. It
was the joy he got from exploring jungles, finding plants and insects,
taking pictures of them and naming them systematically.

I joined the group in October 2017, as a second year undergraduate, thanks
to Anil Thakur sir and Nidhan Singh sir who helped me and guided me to join
eFI Google group. I always had great curiosity of finding, identifying and
remembering plant names since my latter schooling days. Though I was not
from a pure Botany background, being taught basic Plant Taxonomy,
Systematics and Identification courses, I still had a basic idea about
plants, mainly trees identification, given my forestry background albeit
without a faculty specialising in the field of Plant Taxonomy. As a result
of this curiosity, I would often get my plants identified on a couple of
Facebook groups, where many of our group members were active participants.

As far as I remember, my first post was that of an Impatiens sp., that I
posted in the first week of October 2017.

When plants like Impatiens scullyi and Calanthe davidii got identified in
our group, I worked relentlessly on them so as to get them published as
research papers in good journals which ultimately boosted my confidence to
take up Plant Systematics as my career.

However, in the last two years, my postings have decreased significantly,
given the academic work pressure and field exploration. Nevertheless,
whenever I get a chance to go to the fields, my eyes are always in search
of species that are not present in our eFI group. The happiness I get from
finding new additions for our group is one of a kind, putting me short of
words to describe it. Now that the group has grown as the largest database
on Indian plants with more than fourteen thousand species, so it's not easy
to find a plant not present on our group website especially from the well
explored lower temperate areas of Western Himalaya (H.P.). My postings
nowadays are restricted to adding new plants to the website.

At the completion of 15 years of the efloraofindia group, I congratulate
the entire team of eFI who has contributed to the eFI group. And being one
of the youngest moderators and members, I am optimistic that our group will
be able to document the most part of entire Flora of India, pictorially, in
the next decade or so. My Dandvat Pranam and Salute to all hard working
Pillars and Moderators of our group for their selfless service to Taxonomy,
Botany and moreover to our people and our country India.

I can't forget to mention a few names, J.M. Garg sir, Saroj Kasaju sir,
Dinesh Valke sir, D.S. Rawat sir, Pankaj sir, Nidhan Singh sir, Anil Thakur
sir and all the pillars and moderators who are always a big source of
motivation for me. Thanks for enriching me and the entire group with your
ever-widening knowledge.

Dear All
Sharing my story of Journey with efloraofindia

eFloraofindia... This is not only a group for me, this wonderful plateform
changed my life in many ways.
I was fond of searching plants since my childhood. Many times I got
punishment from my parents for going towards forest area for searching
Butea, Capparis, Nympheae Portulaca etc. During College and University
also, my herbarium specimens have been a center of attraction.
When I joined PhD, direction of mind changed and I joined Plant Molecular
Biology Lab in 1999 for PhD. Where my natural instinct towards biodiversity
was at halt for 2-3 years. It again gained momentum when I joined as SRF in
NBPGR Shimla in June 2002.
After getting PhD awarded in March 2005. I could again got some time for
plant exploration. After my joining as Regular Lecturer in 2006 again
excursion tours were a regular phenomenon and photography with digital
camera made it bit easier. During 3-4 years, many specimens were collected
and got identified with the help of Dr Nidhan Singh and our Esteemed
Teacher Dr BD Vashishtha and also with help from internet resources.
Now the real turning point came into life when during net surfing, I came
to know about our beloved group efloraofindia. I sent a mail, requesting to
join group. Dinesh ji introduced me to the group then and the real journey
of my life started.
I shared lot of images with great enthusiasm. After few months Garg ji put
a responsibility on my shoulders and I am still trying my best to prove
myself eligible for that.
This wonderful plateform has provided me opportunity to interact with
renowned Botanists, Amateur Citizen Scientists and Botanical explorers.
Above all I found all persons here a great human being.
Around 2015 time changed and my priorities also changed. In last 5-6 years
many ups and downs came in life, and every time, the beautiful images of
plants during many plant exploration tours alongwith stalwarts of group
like Dr Gurcharan Singh, Dr Pankaj, Shrikant Ingalhalikar, Smita Raskar etc
filled my heart with joy and enthusiasm again and again. Although lots of
tours and trips were done by Me along with Dr Nidhan Singh, but many
memorable events/tours were organised with our group members like 1st WLNPE
2013, Chureshwer Mahadev Trek, Many Chakrata tours, Gori valley, Kausani,
Banjar Valley, Dhanolty tour etc.
Now I am again trying to get some momentum. Hopefully in future, I will be
active atleast in appreciating others contribution.
Thanks
With Regards
Balkar Singh

[efloraofindia:424835] Species, genus & family pages of‎‎‎‎ Rosaceae are now with comparative images

2022-06-05 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,

Species, genus & family pages of*‎‎‎*‎ *Rosaceae

images. On clicking the link of species, one can check the complete
details. Genus pages generally give details of most of the species found in
India.

May I request you to pl. go through & point out mistakes, if any. I hope
this will aid in identification in future. If anybody can send images of
other species of this family (for incorporation in the website), if any, or
can identify unidentified/ wrongly identified images, it will be really
nice. Pl. circulate it widely, for the benefit of all concerned.

No, I am sure they do not eat the donuts but the stem :)
I understand what you mean!
In Sought east asia, they use plants like Padaeria foetida and even
Passiflora foetida, so you are right, but after boiling all that smell goes
off...almost all!!

Thanks, Jeelani ji.
For just reporting, you can post it here in eFloraofIndia.
But the proper way is to make a publication.
Get in touch with some Expert who is making regular publications on

Re: [efloraofindia:424826] Re: This elusive herb 07072012GS1 from Kashmir for ID

2022-06-05 Thread Vijayasankar
Interesting find, Gurcharan ji!
There's a 2012 paper reporting *Sanguisorba minor* from India as a new
report, although without mentioning a subspecies name.
https://taiwania.ntu.edu.tw/pdf/tai.2012.57.410.pdf

As per the protologue
(https://rjb.revistas.csic.es/index.php/rjb/article/view/228/224), the two
subspecies can be distinguished by the following key (Google translate from
Spanish text):
* Plants with urnules with wingless ribs or with narrow and fine wings,
with more or less reticulated faces or sometimes with some short teeth --
subsp. *minor*
** Plants with the always winged urnules -large wings, sometimes very wide,
with entire margin to more or less erous- and faces covered with acute
ridges -- subsp. *balearica *(S. minor subsp. muricata Briq., nom. illeg.)

[efloraofindia:424818] Re: Best Flora Photograph : Vijayasankar Raman : 2022

2022-06-05 Thread Vijayasankar
Thanks Aarti ji, Pankaj and Mahadeswara ji for the kind words!

Pankaj, this plant is said to be used as a food during famines, saving
lives, thus got its name. I think this would apply to other edible
succulents that would survive severe droughts as well.
Who would bother about the smell of the food when starving to near death,
but I guess the juicy and crunchy stems won't smell that bad ;)
