Dear Pankaj ji, I agree with you on the informative additions to the photographs. In Photo of Year we highlight the story behind the photograph more than scientific content. Pictures may be beautiful for sure, but not much informative. Geissaspis cristata, Dendrobium densiflorum (because I know this plant) and Bauhinia X Blakeana were comparatively informative. Just for example, Dendroium densiflorum pic is supposed to be good!!! See the following link: http://www.orchisasia.org/genre/Dendrobium/Dendrobium%20thyrsiflorum/dendrobium_thyrsiflorum_as_mg_3948.jpg Can you differentiate densiflorum from thyrsiflorum with the help of that particular picture? I know this is not a hardcore scientific community but atleast we should try to make it semi-scientific. A layman should be able to identify a plant with the help of the picture, if not then there is no use of such pictures atleast in botany! I think we should make a habit of: 1. putting up informative pics 2. add more pics of same species from different regions of India or abroad 3. more of pics of vegetative parts. We are extremely happy to see it growing day by day. Will it be a good idea to take it a step further and organize some meets, which would give us opportunity to visit a forest together and learn from each other in the field. This also could help us attach faces to most familiar email ids we know and take our communication to higher level. One of the successful models of these meets is ButterflyIndia Meets being organized in different parts of India and are in its 9th edition. [indiantreepix:16866] Remembering Hari and Roshni
Dear Nature Lover Friends, I am sure all the Nature Lovers remember the shocking news we received in first week of august last year. Yes, I am referring to the news that struck us about the Gautami train mishap. In which we lost our enthusiastic team members Hari Iyer and Roshni Mukherji. I still remember the day I received the shocking news. I did not have the fortune of personally meeting them anytime, but they touched my life through their work of biodiversity documentation in the form of NerdyBirders.com website and active participation on the groups. I was in touch with them through emails and social networking sites like Orkut. We (DiversityIndia) have decided to begin a Fellowship in the memory of our friends Hari and Roshni. So friends of Hari and Roshni and Members of DiversityIndia would contribute to this fellowship fund every year and the fellowships would be awarded to deserving candidates in the field of Biodiversity Documentation. We plan to identify a theme area every year and a committee would administer the whole process of fellowships. The details would be posted on the DiversityIndia blogs [ http://diversityindia.blogspot.com/search/label/Fellowship] and I would like to request all the members to participate in this cause. Suggestions on this are welcome and may be sent to me [vijay.ba...@gmail.com ].
