I request members to show large scale participation by uploading both identified and unidentified members of this family during this week, and be ready with as many regional names as you can collect from published sources as well as contacts with local. I don't know whether I should divulge this secret or not, but felt like informing you that Dr. Porcher has prepared an elaborate introduction for you. This should go a long way in preparing the members for the week. I am going to Kashmir tomorrow for nearly 45-50 days. Fruit is similar to Custard apple with some thorns on the outer fruit. Re: [efloraofindia:104047] Re: Euphorbia pulcherrima (Poinsettia)-MN130112
Thanks Madhuri ji, Prashant ji, Ushadi, Balkar ji for the compliments. Madhuri ji thanks for your good wishes. Ushadi, I bought it as a small plant three years back from a nursery. Yes the red bracts appear just when the winter starts and by the Christmas time all the bracts are bigger and more red and the plant looks very beautiful. The bracts will be there till March and then all be fell down. I just gave a light pruning in March and the plant become tall with green leaves. No synthetic fertilisers, just cow dung and worm tea for its growth. Regards, Mani Nair
Re: [efloraofindia:104095] Re: Euphorbia pulcherrima (Poinsettia)-MN130112
Thanks Ushadi, yes till March. Cow dung we get here in the dried form. Two handful each pot every three months. Worm tea I prepare myself. I got a worm bin from which I get the worm castings (worm manure) which I mix two handfuls for 1 litre of water and spray on the leaves every week and the remaining tea I put in the soil. It is a good tonic as well as organic pesticide. The plus point is that there is no side effects and no smell as in fish meals etc. Regards, Mani

Dear Rathinasabapathy ji, I had the same plant with me, but did not flower or fruited. It was growing in a pot. What could be the reason for its not flowering? Is it due to the pot size. Yes Dr. Khullar, you are right, but I did not ask for any identification as can be seen from the subject line nor I was interested to know the ID of the plant. I am just an amateur gardener and sent the photos as it was looking beautiful. If people send the ID then it is not my mistake nor I can stop them from sending the ID. Regards, Mani Nair Dear Sir, Stop sending such pictures of ferns for any meaningful identification. If you have to, then also send a close up of the fertile frond. Otherwise it is imagined taxonomy or looks like syndrome. S P Khullar On 11/19/11, Dr. S.P. The natural species has simple pinnae, but sometimes the plumose (very divided) forms and furcate forms are so different in shape that it is hard to tell which actual species they belong to. However in Nephrolepis the stipe-scales are very helpful and can pinpoint the underlying species even when the shape has become unrecognisable due to these genetic mutations. Anyway, the fern itself is not very remarkable as it is widely grown, but I must offer my congratulations to the splendid vertical stand they have been arranged in - I have never seen such a fine display in any of the horticultural shows I often visit. If that were shown at the annual Royal Horticultural Show, Chelsea, London, one of the biggest and best known shows, I'm sure it would receive a gold medal. The Queen (of England, I mean) usually goes to visit that show, and Prince Charles is now a patron of the British Pteridological Society (ferns!) and grows many hardy ferns and cultivars in his superb garden at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, so would undoubtedly be very impressed. Now I understand what vertical gardening means - I struggle to be a mere horizontal gardener, out the back of my flat in Kathmandu, though the climate is fairly kind to us, apart from the Winter drought, when there's also no water in the taps, either! In the UK there are many very nicely organised fern-gardens, with greenhouses for the tropical species, but this display beats the lot! Perhaps it needs more variation in the species grown, to add to the interest, but the idea and concept are spectacular. Best wishes, Chris Fraser-Jenkins, Kathmandu, Nepal. Thanks, Dr. Chris F-J.
