[efloraofindia:195995] Re: Araceae, Arecaceae and Zingiberaceae Fortnight: Zingiberaceae- Costus speciosus from Yamunanagar for validation-GSAUG24

2014-08-08 Thread manudev madhavan
Dear All,

The name of this species has been changed very recently. Specht Stevenson
(2006) proposed a separate genus status for this species as *Cheilocostus
speciosus *(J.Koenig) C.D.Specht (2006: 159) based on a new phylogeny-based
classification of the family Costaceae. They choose *C. speciosus *as the
type species based on* Banksea speciosa* J.Koenig (1783: 75). But this
generic name is a later parahomonym of *Banksia *J.R.Forster G.Forster
and is treated as a homonym. Thus Cheilocostus is a replacement name for
*Banksea*. However, already in 1791, Retzius had published a replacement
name for *Banksea*, namely *Hellenia *Retzius. Thus, *Cheilocostus *is an
illegitimate superfluous name for *Hellenia*.

Dr. Suchandra Dutta (2010) proposed a new combination based on this, as
*Hellenia
speciosa (*J.Koenig) S.R.Dutta (2010: 152) but she considered the basionym
to be *Costus speciosus* Koenig ex Smith instead of *Banksea speciosa*
J.G. Koenig thus the combination became illegitimate. However she rectified
the mistake and legitmately published the name *Hellenia speciosa* (J.
Koenig ex Smith) S. Duta later (Pleione 7(1): 28 - 29. 2013).

Goaverts (2013) published the same combination in same year (2013) as *Hellenia
speciosa* (J.Koenig) Govaerts unaware of the second publication of Dr.
Dutta (Phytotaxa 151 (1): 63–64; 2013). However according to the rule of
priority the combination of Dr. Dutta is valid which hadbeen published
earlier.

Thus the correct name is *Hellenia speciosa (J. Koenig ex Smith) S. Dutta,
Pleione 7(1): 228. 2013*

*regards*

I am confused.. seeing the long appendix, well exserted beyond the mouth,
which is not a characteristic feature for *A. sahyadricum*.
However, another closely allied species *A. ghaticum* (Sardesai *et al*.)
Punekar Kumaran, actually described as a variety of the former species,
has an appendix which exserts beyond the mouth of the tube. I suppose this
could be *A. ghaticum* (Sardesai *et al*.) Punekar Kumaran, though I

[efloraofindia:123819] Re: two more new species from Kerala

2012-08-09 Thread manudev madhavan

Congratulations to all..!!

Let me repeat the words of Usha di,

*may be these reviewers and editors are very honest and upright people ...
*

* may be we should congratulate them for their honesty... *

Similar to Mayurji, I am not able to digest the fact that a paper being
accepted ( that too a new species), within a couple of days..!!

I must admit, the Reviewers have done a GREAT job...!! And I am worried,
not for the long delay being taken for the review of one of my new species,
which took almost one year for the process, not for the eager of authors to
introduce the new plant to the public..!!

A new species can be easily published in a journal with high impact
factors. But it may take months or sometime years to publish it after its
critical review process..!! I heard from a reliable source, that another
fellow is waiting for the review process of a *similar* species for its
publication in a high impact journal.

I hope that would have been a miscommunication..!!

I need to add one more thing..!!

Last week I heard another story about a species already published in JETB
(Journal of economic taxonomic Botany). A researcher tried in vein to
find the type specimen or any other collections of that particular species.
Interestingly, none of the authors remember the exact locality, where the
plant was collected and the place where the specimens were deposited...!!
and the saddest thing is that, one of the author admitted that, he/she
hasn't seen that plant.. Who knows the truth whether the species occurs or
not??

*may be these researchers are very honest and upright people ...
may be we should congratulate them for their honesty... *

*regards*

Taxonomists getting Extinct and Species Data

[efloraofindia:123252] Re: [itpmods:5290] Re: another query on citing voucher specimens

2012-08-01 Thread manudev madhavan
I usually record as much as variations found in the field and I usually
give different numbers if a plant shows variation even if it is collected
from the same location and same population. My query was to sort out the
best way to cite these collections made from same locality..

thanks

You should understand one thing. Please dotn have a tendency to
identify all plants in the wild. So even if you have multiple
collections of same taxa from same locality but may be different
population (not from same population), then you must give different
number. If you collect multiple plants from one population then you
can give same number with some suffix.

Just for information. When we study pollination biology there is
pollination success which can be divided into two parts. Male pollination
success: meaning how many times insect visited divided by how many times it
was actually able to take off the pollinia.
Female pollination success: meaning how many times insect or pollinator
visited the flower divided by how many times it was able to deposit the
pollinia on the stigma. Then overall pollination success can be represented
by ratio of first by second.

Re: [efloraofindia:115636] 31.08.11.JP.02 - Eriocaulon spp. identification2

2012-05-05 Thread manudev madhavan
Hi, '

This could be *Eriocaulon heterolepis* Steudel, which has long exceeding
involucral bracts. I have collected this species myself from Maharashtra.
However, I can not confirm the identity without seeing the dissected
flowers and seeds. You may refer the book Eriocaulaceae of India by
Ansari Balakrishnan.

Important diagonostic features for this species are as follows..

Rootstock absent; Peduncles many; Heads white or grey; Involucral bracts
oblong-lanceolate, spreading; Male sepalsconnate ion to a spathe, 3-lobed;
Anthers blac; Female sepals-3, free, unequal; Female petals 3,
spathulate, not clawed; Cells of seed coat transversely elongated, aligned
in vertical rows; Appendages 5-6. dialated at apex, from the transverse
radial walls appears to be in transverse rings on the surface of the seeds.

With warm regards

 Hello,

Another species of *Eriocaulon *seen at Matheran.

This one has prominent (involucral?) bracts beneath the inflorescence.

 Dear friends
We are lucky to have a genius member Mr. Dinesh Valke who always takes us
out of troubled waters. Stung by the size limitation of attachments he gave
us an option of Google docs, and an option to copy (from google docs) and
paste facility in the web mail itself.
Today he came up with the idea of using insert function (a blue square
on left of link) to allow normal size images being posted from Group forum.
It should be a big sigh of relief for many who were not able to post images
earlier. You may use the following link to reach the forum:

 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/indiantreepix

 1. Click New Topic (red square on top left. Mail compose window will open.
 2. Enter subject line
 3. Click into the text window and type information you wish to share.
 4. Click Insert button (blue square left of Link) and insert pictures one
 after another.
 5. Picture may become smaller a few seconds after it is inserted. click it
to select original size from the options of Small/Medium/Large/Original
 6. Click Post to send your mail.
