FYI - has anyone in the group heard of or used this (pl see below). Please
do let us know, since many of us do have a problem with taxonomy and field
id of trees that is so essential to our work. Thanks. Sunita

June 8: In a first of its kind initiative, researchers at the French
institute of Pondicherry (IFP) and CIRAD, France, have developed an open
source software application for identification of tree species in the two
major biodiversity hotspots in the world.

Now, at the click of a mouse, taxonomists, specialists and non-specialists
can identify tree species in the rain forests of the Western Ghats and the
Annamite rain forests of Laos, near Vietnam.

The project, biodiversity informatics and cooperation in taxonomy for
interactive shared knowledge base (BIOTIK), is funded by the European Union.
The software was developed by Dr Pierre Grard of CIRAD while a team of
researchers led by Dr B.R. Ramesh developed the database on the tree
species.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dr Ramesh, director of research, IFP, said,
“The Western Ghats, comprising 1,600 km of tropical rain forests in the
states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat, are
under threat from various factors including construction of dams and
depletion of forest resources.”

“The main objective of creating this database is to facilitate the
conservation of endemic species of trees in the Western Ghats and address
the needs of stakeholders who are involved in maintaining and preserving
these diverse rain forests,” Mr Ramesh said. “The software is available
online at www.ifpindia.org/biotik and www.biotik.org.,” he added.

Thanks Tabish ji
I think you are right: serrate leaves, absence of bracteoles, glabrous stems
and capsule, rounded lateral petals all go for I. edgeworthii. By the way,
thanks for getting one more of my plants into FOI website, since I. scabrida
is already there but not I. edgeworthii.

Tragopogon kashmirianus G. Singh from Kashmir, a species that I had described
in 1976 (Forest Flora of Srinagar p. 123, fig. 4), an allotetraploid species.
Photographed from hill above Cheshmashahi on June 26, 2010. The species is
characterised among other things by ray florets with purple striated yellow
corolla. The flowers open in the morning and close at noon, and as such I could
not catch an open head. I have as such split a closed head to show the corolla.
Details are available on:

  http://people.du.ac.in/~singhg45/gsnomen.html#New Species described

Recently important molecular research was done on this species and results
published in 2008:

Molecular data reveal that the tetraploid Tragopogon kashmirianus(Asteraceae:
Lactuceae) is distinct from the North American T. mirus

  Hi all,
I found this lovely pink wildflower bush in a wasteland adjacent to

The bush was barely two feet high and came only in April. It had
 occupied
a fairly large area. It continued to flower through May. I have
 seen this
plant only this year. Last year this plant was not there. At that
 time,
other plants dominated the area-Tephrosia purpurea etc. This year
 there were
no plants that dominated the area last year, due to inadequate
