a lot of valuable revision history when I do this. Is there a way
to avoid this information loss?

The history of the file joe.java that you have been working on is in a
file in the original repository. Do a cvs status joe.java and look on the
line Repository revision:. It has the name of the repository file. It
ends in the string /joe.java,v.

Simply copy the joe.java,v file from the original repository into the
correct place in the new repository.

Wow! Let me make sure I have this straight: do you mean that
instead of doing

  % cvs -d original_repo checkout myproj
  % cd myproj
% cvs -d new_repo import myproj blah blah

...(and losing all history info in the process, I suppose) I could
simply do this

  % cp -pr original_repo/myproj new_repo

??

What about removing a whole project with

  % rm -rf cvs_repository/project_to_remove

? Would this mess up the rest of cvs_repository in any way?

Thanks!

This means there is no CVS subdirectory, so CVS has no clue where to look in
the repository. The message itself is a little overboard - I think the
*PANIC* could be removed without any loss of information, and will cause a
lot less panic among new users ;-)

Can you please provide us the exact command for getting
 editor information

You'll have to check out the module first. The editors command does not work
against the repository, but against the current directory.

Yup! You're a quick study. You get an A. :-)

I assume that's $CVSROOT/project_to_remove.

It depends. You might have a problem if project_to_remove is part of a
module definition in $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/modules. The modules file is, I
believe, the only place where CVS creates dependencies on top-level
directories in $CVSROOT. Mentioning a non-existent module in the *info
files in $CVSROOT/CVSROOT is benign.

Of course, deleting a module from the repository means that it's no longer
there (Duh!). Don't expect CVS operations in a checked out
project_to_remove sandbox to work. But, you knew that, didn't you?

have the root passwd for the server. Maybe I'll ask the sys admin to

You shouldn't need root access for this. CVS doesn't operate as root, and it
manipulates the files just fine. If your cvs admin has shell access, he/she
should be able to remove the files quite easily.

several instances of the word "macro" in the FAQ, and each instance

Question regarding branch merges

2004-05-14 Thread Mark Lancisi

I've got a branch that I've been keeping in line with the HEAD of the trunk by merging
via :

cvs update -d -j foottag -j HEAD

in my branch sandbox, and then committing the results and moving the foottag on the

This works great.. However - there is one issue I'm seeing.. New directories on the

existing directories do, but new directories containing new files do not.

Does anyone have any idea if this is a design limitation or a bug in cvs? Or am I

It's a hold-over from RCS. RCS files being used by CVS should always
have it enabled (that's how CVS creates them, but files that were
