Re: backup programs

1999-01-30 Thread Jeff Stahl

I'm using PowerQuest's DriveImage 2.0, and am VERY impressed with it so far.
It creates an entire hard disk image, so you can re-install your entire hard
disk in about 20 minutes... plus it supports ext2 partitions! It also has a
feature to back up to Zip drives in particular. I would highly recommend
this package!

Subject: backup programs

Hi Everyone,

This is a slightly off-topic question (so apologies in advance) as it's
not inspiron-specific, but I'm trying to evaluate a few backup programs
for use with my i3k + Iomega Ditto Max tape drive (and occasionally, a Zip
drive). I want something reliable, flexible, and easy to use (menu-driven,
etc,...). Currently, I'm looking at

KBackup
Taper
PerfectBackup
BRU 2000

I have a philosophical preference for free/shareware programs in general,
so I'm leaning to one of the first three. I'd be really grateful, though,
if anyone on the list had experience with one or more of the above.
Reliability is the main issue in the end, so if needed I'd hand over the
$80 to LinuxMall for BRU, but I'm curious about the alternatives.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: I7K DVDROM drive for CDRW ?

1999-01-20 Thread Jeff Stahl

I just got a call from Dell Tech support today regarding reading CD-RW on
the Torisan DVD drive, and they said it will work... you just need to go to
the Adaptec web site and download something called a UDF reader (it's
software). They said once this is properly installed, you should be able to
read a closed CD-RW on your DVD drives. I haven't tried it yet, but it's
next on my to-do list!

Yes, normally all the 2nd generation DVD drive should read CDRW (Creative
 Labs DVD Encore
does it well, why not matsushita ones).

Can anyone offer anything further on the subject of reading CD-RWs, in my
case, on Matsushita DVD-ROM SR-8171?... I am trying and failing. Anyone had
any luck w/ this? Does it make sense to search for new and improved
drivers?
(I tried System Properties Device Manager ... Update Driver ...
Microsoft Windows Update, but crashed the program.)

I, too, was counting on this technology - today, specifically, and am
SOL

Has someone ever tried to read a CDRW with the DVDROM installed in the
I7000 (UDF installed supposed) ?

If yes, what were the results,

Thanks,
