The IETF Nominating Committee (NomCom) appoints people to fill the open slots
on the IETF LLC, IETF Trust, the IAB, and the IESG. Ten voting members for the
NomCom are selected in a verifiably random way from a pool of volunteers. We
already received 32 eligible volunteers, but please volunteer. A large pool of
volunteers helps make the process work better.

NomCom activity is expected to start in July 2024 and run through to November
2024. The goal is to do the bulk of the work at IETF 120 and 121, with
supplemental conference calls between those times. Remote participation will be
supported.

The NomCom activities involve collecting requirements from the community,
reviewing candidate responses, reviewing feedback from community members about
candidates, interviewing candidates, and nominating a slate of candidates.

RFC 8713 details the NomCom process. The NomCom voting member selection will
follow RFC 9389 guidelines. People qualify for NomCom participation in one of
three ways:
attendance at IETF meetings (online or virtual),
service as a working group chair or secretary, or
publication of IETF RFCs in last five years (exact criteria details here

Hi,

The NomCom met yesterday decided to keep feedback open until 1200 Friday (CET).
We hope to be able to make some decisions on Friday afternoon.

Feedback is welcome in many forms:

 - The web: https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2023/feedback/

 - Email: nomcom-2...@ietf.org

 - In person: The NomCom will be operating office hours during IETF 118 (see
below). Look for NomCom members (we will have an orange dot on our badges).

 - Anonymously/indirectly: We don't have an anonymous feedback system, but any
member of the IETF community can submit feedback on behalf of another person.
I am happy to do this for you and have asked that NomCom members also offer to
accept anonymous feedback.

The NomCom has an office on the Lobby level of the Hilton if you want to come
in person to provide feedback. The following times are when the London room is
currently open (all Prague local time):

Monday: 10:30-12:00, 13:00-16:30, 17:30-18:30
Tuesday: 08:30-09:30, 11:30-12:00, 15:00-15:30, 16:30-18:00
Wednesday: 09:30-10:30, 11:30-12:00, 14:00-14:30, 15:30-16:30
Thursday: 08:30-09:30, 11:30-12:00, 14:30-18:30
Friday: 08:30-12:00

Please knock if the door is closed. We might be interviewing or talking to
someone. If you would like to reserve some of the above time in advance, send
me a note. If the room is vacant, send me a note, I might be conducting
interviews in the Brussels room next door.

Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback already. The NomCom depends
greatly on community feedback for making the best decisions. We treat all
feedback as confidential.

Thanks,
Martin

Subject: NomCom 2021-2022 Call for Nominations

Finally! The moment we've all been waiting for:

   C A L L F O R N O M I N A T I O N S ! ! !

The 2021-22 IETF Nominating Committee (NomCom) is seeking nominations from
now until Monday, October 11, 2021.

The open positions and more information are found at the NomCom web site:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2021/

They are also included below for convenience.

Nominations may be made by selecting the Nominate link at the top of the
NomCom 2021 home page, or by visiting the following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2021/nominate/

Self-nomination is welcome!

Note: Nominations made using the web tool require an ietf.org datatracker
account. You can create a datatracker ietf.org account if you don't have one
already by visiting the following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/accounts/create/

If you are unable to use the web form, nominations may instead be made by
email to nomcom-2021 at ietf dot org. If using email, please include the word
"Nominate"
in the Subject and indicate in the email who is being nominated, their
email address (to confirm acceptance of the nomination), and the position for
which you are making the nomination. If you are nominating someone other than
yourself, please tell us if we may tell the nominee that you were the one who
made the nomination. If you wish to nominate someone via email for more than
one position, please use separate emails to do so.

Willing nominees will be asked to fill out a questionnaire specific to the
position for which they are nominated. The finalized questionnaires will be
available no later than Monday, September 6, 2021 (preliminary versions are
already posted) and have a submission deadline of Monday, October 18, 2021.

NomCom 2021-22 will follow the policy for "Open Disclosure of Willing
Nominees" described in BCP 10/RFC 8713: "The list of nominees willing to be
considered for positions under review in the current NomCom cycle is not
confidential". Willing nominees for each position will be listed in a publicly
accessible way, e.g., anyone with a datatracker account may access the lists.
Additionally, the nomination form asks if we may share your own name with the
nominee. In all other ways, the confidentiality requirements of BCP
10 remain in effect. All feedback and all NomCom deliberations will remain
confidential and will not be disclosed.

There is a field on the form you can mark in order to allow the NomCom to
tell the nominee that you were the one who made the nomination. This defaults
to “no” - so if you don't mark the field we won’t tell.

In order to ensure time to collect sufficient community feedback about each
of the willing nominees, nominations must be received by the NomCom on or
before Monday, October 11, 2021.

Please submit your nominations as early as possible for the sake of your
nominees. Note that nominations should not wait for nominee management
permission, as it is easier to decline the nomination than put one in late.

The NomCom appoints individuals to fill open slots on the IAB, IESG, the
IETF Trust and the LLC Board:

ART AD: 1 position
INT AD: 1 position
OPS AD: 1 position
RTG AD: 1 position
SEC AD: 1 position
TSV AD: 1 position
IETF Trust: 1 position
IETF LLC: 1 position
IAB: 6 positions

The list of people and posts whose terms end with the March 2022 IETF
meeting, and thus the positions for which this NomCom is responsible, is:

[An asterisk (*) next to a person's name indicates they do not intend to
accept renomination.]

LLC Board (3-year term)
Jason Livingood

IETF Trust (3-year term)
Kathleen Moriarty

IAB (2-year term)
Ben Campbell *
Cullen Jennings
Mirja Kühlewind
Jared Mauch
Tommy Pauly
Jiankang Yao

IESG (2-year term)
Murray Kucherawy, ART AD
Erik Kline, INT AD
Robert Wilton, OPS AD
Martin Vigoureux, RTG AD
Benjamin Kaduk, SEC AD *
Martin Duke, TSV AD

Please be resourceful in identifying possible candidates for these
positions, as developing our talent is a very crucial requirement for the IETF,
and also, please consider accepting a nomination. You'll find extensive
information about specific positions, in individual tabs at:

Pretty ugly and limited though, and as I understand it the major
(unclassified) deployment, in the airline trade, is trying to migrate away. I
have no idea if there are classified deployments, but if so, I expect they use
the non-variable GOSIP format.

I think ISO 8473 is a pretty good model of how not to do it.

it may not belong in the network layer header of the outgoing packet. The
SA is arguably a function of the payload and the application. Indeed some
MPLS OAM solutions do just that by making the return address implicit in
the arrival LSP, or a parameter in a payload TLV. SA as in IP is arguably
just a convenience for a simplified method of operating an application.

Re: [Int-area] [MEXT] Rethink on Mobile IPv6

2010-03-03 Thread Wassim Haddad
Hi Charles,

To be brief:
- I think we need to allow network operators to
utilize security mechanisms they deem appropriate,
whether or not standardized by the IETF.

- I think we need to allow network operators to
utilize tunneling mechanisms they deem appropriate,
whether or not standardized by the IETF.

I'm happy to break down the specification into components (such as route
optimization, etc.).
I'll even volunteer to hack the text. But I do not think this is a major
stumbling block.
After all, the mobile node is the one initiating route optimization. If the
home agent does not support it, there is no route optimization -- in other
words, this function is trivially controllable by operators.

= IMHO, it also makes (much) sense to simplify the RO mode and not just
split it.

Wassim H.

and DSMIP6 as a solution for interworking and mobility between
different access technologies and only 3GPP has adopted it in a very
limited manner for Rel 8 (for use on the S2c interface) with the
likelihood of it being actually deployed quite low (IMO).

While there are many reasons that can be attributed to the lack of
implementations and use, one that I would like to raise is the the
concern with the overly complex security model that MIP6/DSMIP6 relies
on today. MIP6/DSMIP6 requires IPsec and IKE/IKEv2 (RFC3776/4877) to
secure the signaling between the MN and HA. The fundamental purpose of
MIP6/DSMIP6 is to provide mobility to hosts. At a very high level the
MIP6/DSMIP6 protocol boils down to the ability to setup a tunnel
between the MN and HA and update the MN tunnel end-point whenever
there is a change in the associated IP address (CoA). The signaling to
establish the tunnel needs to be secure. But using a protocol like
IKEv2 and IPsec to achieve this security is just an overkill. It
increases the complexity of the implementation as a result of many
factors that have been captured in I-D:
draft-patil-mext-mip6issueswithipsec and discussed in the MEXT WG
 meetings.

Given the objective of the protocol is to enable IP mobility for
hosts, it should focus on doing that well in a manner that makes it
easy to implement/adopt/deploy/scale. My opinion as a result of
implementation experience is that MIP6/DSMIP6 can be significantly
simplified, especially the security architecture. The protocol as
specified currently in RFC3775/RFC is a kitchensink of features.
Getting back to basics of simply establishing a tunnel between the MN
and HA and managing that tunnel is all that is needed and would
potentially see the light of day in the real world.

You may want to call it as Mobile IPv6-lite if you wish. But I do
believe that a simplification of the protocol is needed without which
I fear it will remain an academic exercise with many years spent in
developing a spec. I hope the working group and people who are
involved in mobility related work would consider undertaking such an
 effort in the IETF.
