FCC still has them listed as KAVT. Tonight while trying frantically to get to the last good hamburger place in San Jose before closing, I heard only Spanish on 1680. Por que? Mike is right, they are still legally KGED. Now, if they've applied for the KGED call letters but haven't recieved approval for them, they have been ill-legally Identifying the station for several days now. However, unlike a license renewal applicaiton that is in processing, I don't think having an application in processing for certain call letters allows you to use them -- Sincerely, Paul B. Re: [IRCA] Reloj 950 - was IRCA Digest, Vol 47, Issue 44
Thanks Curt. I think that I often heard Reloj on 950, years ago when local WXLW was off @ night but I could definitely hear the ticks several times in the past few weeks under WXLW and (presumably) Detroit. Quite an achievement on a crowded channel with a local (albeit with reduced power), leading the way. I heard no talk but just like KAZ mentioned, the ticks and code cut through the noise. I have gotten Reloj on 570 every night, even when the cx do not seem to be Au at all. Some nights are better than others but I have caught them every time I scanned 570. 73 Dave in Indy -Original Message- From: W. The reportedly less powerful stations -- from the WRTH -- with presumed locations of Havana in the west, 230nm from me crossing the Florida peninsula, and the even lower powered Mayari Arriba in far eastern Cuba, 430nm partially over Cuban terrain, make the signals much weaker than 570kHz RR Santa Clara which is due south of me 235nm across an almost all water path. These two can be detected during the day by ticks, tones, and code, but announcements are intelligible usually only at night -- Mayari Arriba heard only barely. Hey Willis: I'm not sure about an actual pattern change but I have noticed a slight shift, myself to the station at night. About 5 weeks ago (early Feb), I could routinely get at least two stations underneath WFNI. Now WFNI seems stronger, at night. I live 21 miles away from their transmitter and have noticed a PERCEIVED shift / change. Wonder if wet ground, snow cover or maybe a problem has skewed the pattern? [IRCA] Frankenlights Haunt Grayland-- Scare Up China North Korea
Hello All, As others have noted, the sunrise period was a disappointment for TP's, but this morning during a short ULR DXpedition to Grayland, the Asiatics were pretty strong around 1315 UTC, and China-963 and North Korea-657 provided weak audio for the juiced-up SRF-39FP. Besides this, JOAK-594, JOAB-693, JOIB-747, JOUB-774, JOBB-828 and HLCA-972 all had some audio on the juiced-up DT-200VX (hot-rodded for low band), and 1053 had CC audio on the other juiced-up DT-200VX (peaked for high band). The signal levels in Grayland throughout the night were astounding, although sunrise was more of a fizzle than a sizzle. DU hets were very weak, and 1575 was smothered by QRM in Grayland, preventing any chance of hearing VOA on the hot-rodded ULR's. All of these models (one analog and two digital) have had 6.25 mega-antenna transplants, making them far more sensitive than regular ULR's. By comparison, the Sony SRF-T615 stock unit (the only stock unit taken to Grayland) could only receive the three strongest Japanese powerhouses-- 594, 774 and 828. The digital DT-200VX units really made it easy to check TP's in the unfamiliar environment, running down the 9 kHz splits, and coming up with hets or audio on most frequencies (before 1330 UTC). However, the most sensitive Frankenlight of all, the analog Super Prison Radio 2, was needed to make the weak receptions of CRI-963 and DPRK-657, both of which didn't show up on the digital units. Mp3 recordings were made of a couple of booming Japanese (774 and 828), which are tough to hear at my home in Puyallup because of local QRM. This mini-DXpedition was a total blast, and the Grayland Motel (Room 15) had no RF noise at all. Every ULR DXer should have this much fun!!! 73, Gary DeBock **It's Tax Time! Hi Dennis, You are right about them not answering the phone. Yesterday about 4 PM I decided to go to Grayland, and left a message on their recorder that I wanted to make a reservation, and pay by CC. No answer for two hours! I tried again, and must have caught the lady when she was in that little room, and she took my info. She said, Your room is number 15 in the motel. We will leave the door unlocked for you. I kind of wondered if somebody would walk in off the street and take my room. 73, Gary **It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money Finance. Re: [IRCA] Frankenlights Haunt Grayland-- Scare Up China North Korea
Hi Walt, They still have the toll-free number, but they don't seem to answer it. It doesn't look like they really care much about the business, for whatever reason. The room was OK and the DX environment is superb, but Grayland is relatively isolated compared to the more popular tourist destinations of Westport, Ocean Shores, etc., and the room rate ($67.89) was about the same as a room here in Puyallup, hardly a resort town. It may not be the financial success the owners were hoping for. 73, Gary. **It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money Finance. [IRCA] Ultralight DXpeditions...Freedom and Fun Without a Ton .
If you think that heavy, expensive receivers and antennas of legendary length are necessary for serious DXpedition fun, think again! If you are fortunate enough to live near the ocean coasts, there is a new DXing option for individuals or groups which offers the ultimate in freedom and fun: chasing TP's or TA's with stock or hot-rodded ULR's. To be sure, chasing transoceanic DX with these pocket radios is a radical change from deploying the ultimate in advanced gear, but certain of us have discovered that the fun and excitement level goes way up along with the challenge level! And... the challenge level can even be adjusted according to the DXer's desires. Want more sensitivity? It's being done now in exciting antenna transplants. Need more selectivity? Narrow filter mods are extremely popular. Want to couple up effective external antennas? That's being done also. A test DXpedition to Grayland, Washington today included three hot-rodded and one stock ULR, for a total weight of under two pounds. The audio recorders added a few more ounces, as did a few accessories. The only somewhat heavy item was an ICF-2010 spotting portable-- which outweighed everything else combined. The total cost of this overachieving lightweight group? About $500, including the ICF-2010. This thrilling group was chasing TP-DX all night long, in what turned out to be rather modest propagation. Despite this, 8 TP's from Japan, South Korea, North Korea and China were heard, and the tiny radios had heterodynes on most of the other 9 kHz splits. The ICF-2010 was used only to check carrier levels on SSB, and it was helpful for watching propagation shifts. But in the ultimate sensitivity test, a very weak TP (CRI-963 in China) was received with audio on the modified SRF-39FP (with a 6.25 antenna transplant), and the ICF-2010 had only a heterodyne. North Korea-653 was the same story. Both were tough catches, but the modified ULR's proved they could not only compete, but compete and succeed. If this idea of an ultra-exciting DXpedition appeals to you, why not invest a little pocket change in some exciting pocket radios, consider some effective modifications, and go try your luck? You have nothing to lose but your DX boredom, as you discover that these ultra light radios pack an ultra heavy DX punch. 73, Gary DeBock **It's Tax Time! [IRCA] WNTP DX barely heard in OK
** U S A [and non]. Tried for the postponed WNTP 990 Philadelphia DX test UT March 15, using DX-398 in the yard. Fortunately it had stopped raining a few hours earlier and things had dried off somewhat. First try around 0420 UT yielded nothing, nor expected with day pattern toward SE. Listened intently from 0450 to 0500 during the ND 12.5 kW portion. XET was not much of a problem, close to a right angle, and no sign of CBW, which can boom in when K-indices are low. SWPC says: The mid-latitude K-index at 0300 UTC on 15 March was 2 (18 nT). But aimed toward Philadelphia, there was still a pile of QRM, multiple subaudible heterodynes from all the other stations, almost like a graveyard. However, at 0451 I could hear an occasional tone, but never copy any Morse code ID. At times the tones seemed evenly spaced like a timesignal. Sweeps definitely heard peaking around 0454-0456. So I count this only on the basis of assuming no other station would be transmitting such material. Right at 0500 on came the Cuban National Anthem, from the SE, presumably R. Guamá, Pinar del Rio, as mentioned by Arnie Coro in DXLD 8-031, if that is the only Cuban on the frequency, but not noticed prior to that. No IBOC from KTOK-1000 audible, which wipes out 990 here in the daytime. No doubt those closer to Philly or with better equipment heard the WNTP test more definitely than I did. Re: [IRCA] WNTP DX Test
No sign of the test up here. Conditions have been poor all day with high noise, possibly due to the snow that has been falling for most of the day, and low signal levels, so I wasn't expecting much. Even CBW, which normally dominates the frequency, was barely above the noise at times. Early during the test, there was someone else there, but no idea who. Now that the test is over conditions have improved and CBW is at it's normal S9+ Thanks to both Rene and Jim for making this possible. [IRCA] WNTP-990 DX TEST
WNTP - 990 DX TEST After the change to the 12.5 kw transmitter, at around 0030 EDST, the signal level went up and was easier to copy. Heard the CW and sweep tones, and (maybe) the march music. Not that sure about the march music, but the CW and sweep tones are for sure. Thanks Rene for the test!
