Per the latest Broadcasting Information column in the IRCA , a lot of stations this time around have gone silent. I wonder how many more will go off because of the economy? Patrick- Well, Thule-1425 was heard here in Mass in the late 60's/early 70's by Gordon Nelson others. I was just never in the right place at the right time. But I'm sure you are correct that it is related to the Auroral Zone. I'm no expert but I guess The Zone has to be quite small in order to enable propagation from that latitude (Thule is at 77º40'22N) to the US (Boston is at 42º21'42N). Anyway, that window is open right now and we are enjoying it. Three of us here on Cape Cod have heard 720 during the past week and one, Roy Barstow in Falmouth, has heard Faroe Islands-531. I'm home sick from work today so I will try for 531 myself around local sunset. 73, Marc DeLorenzo South Dennis, MA - Original Message - From: Patrick Martin mwd...@webtv.net To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 2:04:42 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [IRCA] Greenland-720 Marc, It probably has something to do with the AU Zone. Bill, It is like any business. The one down the street went belly up, but the another one thinks they can make it. Radio is such a big business and the stations can be worth a fortune that trying to get a station on the air is well worth the effort as many stations do survive. Infact most do. At least so far, but if the economy gets worse, the amount of ad money will go down too. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Reading the thread on KOLD-1425 with interest. I'm probably one of the few NA dxers who have heard this station nightly. In 1955-56 while stationed at Keflavik AFB, Iceland KOLD was almost always there with a decent signal. Also heard another AFRTS station on 1594 from French Morocco with regularity. From California in the 1976-78 period I remember I had a good het on 1425 a few nights when others on the WC were hearing the station but I never had audio. We had a 250 watt AFRTS station at Keflavik, called TFK operating on 1484. Don't remember seeing anyone reporting that one. Don K. Patrick Martin wrote: Marc, I think you are right. Re: [IRCA] Greenland-720
I think it was 1978 or 1979 when I had a couple minutes of Xmas Carol from Thule 1425 fade up weakly hetted by 1424.7 which I think was a weak Ecudorian split. This on the SSW 1300 ft Bev in Narragansett RI. I suspect more of those near the coast will log 720 and 531. 73 KAZ -Original Message- From: Marc DeLorenzo midcapem...@comcast.net Sent: Jan 22, 2009 9:40 AM To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [IRCA] Greenland-720 Patrick- Well, Thule-1425 was heard here in Mass in the late 60's/early 70's by Gordon Nelson others. Re: [IRCA] Silent station info
KVLE 610 wasn't making much if any money for The Radio Colorado Network and was nothing more then a simulcast of KRCN 1060. They just weren't that motivated to fix the problem, simple as that. I did some followup and found that they actually have an STA for being off the air. From the STA request: ON OR ABOUT SEPTEMBER 1, 2008, A CONCRETE TRUCK BACKED UP INTO ONE OF THE GUYED WIRES SUPPORTING THE TOWER BROADCASTING THE OPERATIONS OF LICENSEE'S STATION KVLE (AM), VAIL, COLORADO (FCC FACILITY ID NO. 16272). AS A RESULT, THE BROADCAST TOWER COLLAPSED TO THE GROUND AND THE STATION WENT SILENT. LICENSEE ORDERED A REPLACEMENT TOWER AND POURED NEW CONCRETE FOOTERS FOR THE TOWER BASE. HOWEVER, THE REPLACEMENT TOWER HAS NOT YET ARRIVED. ALSO, WITH THE ONSET OF INCLEMENT WEATHER DUE TO THE WINTER SEASON, LICENSEE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ERECT THE REPLACEMENT TOWER UNTIL WARMER WEATHER IN THE SPRING. THEREFORE, LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS THE COMMISSION GRANT TEMPORARY SILENT AUTHORITY FOR ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY DAYS (180) FROM THE SUBMISSION OF THIS REQUEST. It makes me wonder why the operator would not come up with a temporary solution to get the station back on the air even if it meant with limited coverage. There are a number of temporary solutions that are readily available such as a temporary long wire antenna or rental of a skirt fed tower on a trailer which is available from several sources. And especially in a place like Vail where they are off the air during all of the winter ski season which must be their most lucrative months. And being off the air for so long will surely result in a loss of listenership that will never be regained. Colin, Nick and All, A strong carrier from Farda-1575 was received on the 30 loopstick ICF-2010 here at 0125 UTC, with null bearing very close to zero degrees.
