[IRCA] Greenland-720

2009-01-22 Thread Marc DeLorenzo

Patrick-

Well, Thule-1425 was heard here in Mass in the late 60's/early 70's by Gordon
Nelson others.  I was just never in the right place at the right time.  But
I'm sure you are correct that it is related to the Auroral Zone.   I'm no
expert but I guess The Zone has to be quite small in order to enable
propagation from that latitude (Thule is at   77º40'22N) to the US (Boston is
at 42º21'42N).  Anyway, that window is open right now and we are enjoying it.
Three of us here on Cape Cod have heard 720 during the past week and one, Roy
Barstow in Falmouth, has heard Faroe Islands-531.  I'm home sick from work
today so I will try for 531 myself around local sunset.

It probably has something to do with the AU Zone. I was surprised with
Thule back in 1975. I wish I would have known then what I know how and
also had the antennas. It may have been a great TA night too.

Last night had the most amazing LWBC TA conditions since last fall. 171

216, 225, 234, 252. 171 was recorded several times.
This morning far east conditions were decent, 164 Mongolia poor/weak at 1420
utc, 171 Radio Rossii poor/weak but good enough for AM sync lock on the
modified R75; S6 level for 153 Rossii; S9 level for 189 Rossii. 180 and 234
sign off at 1400 so I missed them this morning though they were there last
night after 0600 utc. 279 weak this morning.

Lots of MW hets but nothing with audio on the 1405 utc check.

Bill,

It is like any business. The one down the street went belly up, but the
another one thinks they can make it. Radio is such a big business and
the stations can be worth a fortune that trying to get a station on the
air is well worth the effort as many stations do survive. Infact most
do. At least so far, but if the economy gets worse, the amount of ad
money will go down too.

2009-01-22 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
started earlier today, just after 1400UT, and believe this was a good move, as
things had tanked pretty much by 1500UT. However, there was a low band sunrise
enhancement at 1535 according to the propagation monitor, and I wasn't around
for that, so may have missed something worthwhile, as didn't get back to the
radio until 1550UT. Some Chinese made an appearance earlier, which points to
improving conditions.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

none

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

594 JOAK at 1404UT
774 JOUB at 1412UT
828 JOBB at 1407UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

936 Anhui likely at 1410UT, CC talk by man
972 HLCA likely at 1552UT
1287 JOHR at 1550UT

Re: [IRCA] Greenland-720

2009-01-22 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
Reading the thread on KOLD-1425 with interest. I'm probably one of the
few NA dxers who have heard this station nightly. In 1955-56 while
stationed at Keflavik AFB, Iceland KOLD was almost always there with a
decent signal. Also heard another AFRTS station on 1594 from French
Morocco with regularity. From California in the 1976-78 period I
remember I had a good het on 1425 a few nights when others on the WC
were hearing the station but I never had audio. We had a 250 watt AFRTS
station at Keflavik, called TFK operating on 1484. Don't remember
seeing anyone reporting that one.

Marc,

It probably has something to do with the AU Zone. I was surprised with
Thule back in 1975. I wish I would have known then what I know how and
also had the antennas. It may have been a great TA night too.

I noticed KVLE/610 in Vail CO on the FCC silent stations list. I did

THE GUYED WIRES SUPPORTING THE TOWER BROADCASTING THE OPERATIONS OF
LICENSEE'S STATION KVLE (AM), VAIL, COLORADO (FCC FACILITY ID NO.
16272). AS A RESULT, THE BROADCAST TOWER COLLAPSED TO THE GROUND AND THE
STATION WENT SILENT. LICENSEE ORDERED A REPLACEMENT TOWER AND POURED NEW
CONCRETE FOOTERS FOR THE TOWER BASE. HOWEVER, THE REPLACEMENT TOWER HAS
NOT YET ARRIVED. ALSO, WITH THE ONSET OF INCLEMENT WEATHER DUE TO THE
WINTER SEASON, LICENSEE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ERECT THE REPLACEMENT TOWER
UNTIL WARMER WEATHER IN THE SPRING. THEREFORE, LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY
REQUESTS THE COMMISSION GRANT TEMPORARY SILENT AUTHORITY FOR ONE HUNDRED
EIGHTY DAYS (180) FROM THE SUBMISSION OF THIS REQUEST.

It makes me wonder why the operator would not come up with a temporary
solution to get the station back on the air even if it meant with
limited coverage. There are a number of temporary solutions that are
readily available such as a temporary long wire antenna or rental of a
skirt fed tower on a trailer which is available from several sources.
And especially in a place like Vail where they are off the air during
all of the winter ski season which must be their most lucrative months.
And being off the air for so long will surely result in a loss of
listenership that will never be regained.

Stronger carriers on 756, 954, 1008, 1287 and 1494, but fading is quite erratic.

 Almost

At this point I would say anything goes.

I was listening to a Russian sounding station
on 1134 that was stronger than anything I have
ever heard from Europe - barefoot on the Eton E1

Standing on the balcony of my APT and the air
is cooling off - seems to be effecting the radio
a bit...
Got some interesting MP3 of 1575 and 1134.

Truly amazing for me.

[IRCA] Croatia-1134 Audio on E100 Slider in Victoria, BC

Wow Colin,

You are only the second west coast DXer (that I know of) to receive TA
audio on an Ultralight radio, and the first to receive Croatia-1134!
Congratulations, and I'm sure that your reception would be worthy of a First
Ultralight Radio TA award from John Bryant, and Master Canadian DXer Rob Ross.

Your E100 Slider is already far and away the most successful DXing
model ever created here, no doubt due to the operator. GREAT WORK!

No, Patrick. It's Russian. Moldovan, is basically Romanian, which is a Latin
language and not Slavic, so nothing really in common. They're quite well heard

They're a quasi-independent rump state that's broken away from Moldova, and is
recognized by no one except Russia, who also happens to have a fairly large
