Here are the 12 Alaskans heard this morning around 13:00: Alaskan Bandscan at 13:00 UTC Victoria, BC 4 Sep09 580 KRSA Petersburg Very good local ID cochannel a SS language station. 630 KJNO Junea at fair level under very strong KCIS. 670 KDLG Dillingham. Good level with local ID and into BBCWS news. 700 KBYR Anchorage. A difficult catch due to huge 690 CBU splatter, but KBYR ID heard at 13:05 after Fox news, and into local weather. Fair. 750 KFQD Anchorage. Very strong over KXL, both IDing as NewsRadio. 770 KCHU Valdez easily heard before 13:00 when KTTH hammers them. NPR programming earlier and often over KTTH. Didnt hear a specific local ID, though, but I know its them. 780 KNOM Nome Good reception with very long local weather at 13:03, well over KKOH that happened to dominate at 13:00. Very strong by 13:05 and virtually no sign of KKOH. 800 KINY Juneau. Excellent reception especially at 13:01 with lovely ID at 13:01:40. 800 KINY weather. 850 KICY Nome. Good with noticeable fading, serving all of west Alaska, this is KICY. Well over cochannels (KOA presumed). 870 KSKO McGrath with very strong IDs just before 13:00 for various stations in NPR network in Alaska, 5:00 AM tc, and into NPRs Morning Edition. One of the strongest Alaskan stations today! 890 KBBI Homer. A tough catch due to Village 900 here in Victoria, but after BBC programming, local ID at 12:59 well heard. 930 KTKN Ketchikan. Of course the easiest of all Alaskans to hear. Very good reception. AS for the JJ stations, Bruce, 774 has been a very good performer. Of course, 693 is very difficult here due to CBU 690 Vancouver! Re: [IRCA] TP DX 9-4-09 Down a smidgen in Victoria
Walt For the record, I checked a few other Alaskan freqs 620 was mostly CKRM with KPOJ in the background 780 had easy listening music that was likely KNOM, and certainly not KKOH unless it's changed format 850 was mostly KOA o/KHHO (in all cases I was on the northwest lobe of the K9AY) I've been having trouble hearing JOUB lately but I'm much closer to KTTH-770. The opposite seems to be true for JOAB-693 - it's much easier for me since you guys are closer to CBU. Plus I'm in CBUs null and you're in their main lobe (or close to it). [IRCA] Sept. 4th TPs - Down from Yesterday
Conditions were noticeably poorer this morning, with TPs struggling with splatter more than yesterday. Most interesting to me is how three stations peaked at the same time (1310 UTC) as they did the day before: 1322 mystery station (listed as DXAD, Marawi City, Philipines, variable on 1322 at 5 kW, per PAL) 1475 RTM Malaysia 1575 VOA Thailand I wouldn't have been able to tell this about all three frequencies without having the Perseus recordings; it's super to be able to "rewind the band" and notice patterns like this. -- Here's what I found in audio this morning: 594 JJ strong at 1322 603 HLSA S. They may be off again tonight or over the rest of the weekend as I imagine they are adjusting their antenna system and/or transmitter for their new reduced night power to allow sister station KPIG 1510 Piedmont (Bay area) to increase their night power. If you're in the Pacific NW you should check 1510 tonight & the next few nights. I logged one new one: KCKK 1510 Littleton, CO with Sporting News Radio & calling itself "Mile High Sports Radio." To add to the confusion, KGA is also a sports station. I'm not sure which sports network they are affiliated with but it may well be Sporting News Radio. KGA's new pattern is supposed to reduce their night signal to the south & east, & I'd speculate to the west, great news for DXers in those directions from Spokane, but bad news for me because I'm about six miles north. So they will still be a local pest. I guess those farther away that would like to hear KGA may not be happy either. [IRCA] 2008/2009 season summary
I count the MW season from September through August and I thought I would share a summary of the last season. It was not a very good one, only 10 new stations heard plus 2 new HAR/TIS stations. QSLs were equally as low with only 7 stations plus 1 HAR/TIS. Only 3 QSLs received this calendar year! I'm not sure if it's the economy or lack of interest at the stations. It's becoming more difficult to hear new stations and my totals are only 367 heard. I hope to spend more time this year on MW. On a good note I have had a good year with Utility stations including a QSL from NME Charleston SC on 518 kHz running NAVTEX. [IRCA] KGA 1510 off at times last night
I noticed local pest KGA 1510 Spokane off about 0200 ELT last night & they were mainly off for the next couple hours & still off when I went to bed. [IRCA] Sad News about "Passport to World Band Radio"
PASSPORT TO WORLD BAND RADIO IN LIMBO Hi folks: I wanted to pass this along William Patalon III Baltimore, Maryland Icom R-75, Eton E1XM, Eton S350, Realistic DX-440 105-foot EF-Zepp This is from Radio HF Internet Newsletter VOL. 11 NUMBER 009 http://www.radiohf.ca As with any good recipe, a range of ingredients has to come together if a reference book is to succeed. Solid content is, of course, essential. But in recent months other considerations have had an increased bearing on the future of Passport to World Band Radio. So it is that the 26th Edition of Passport to World Band Radio is being held in limbo. Despite this, for now we are continuing to maintain the WorldScan database and uphold all proprietary material. Among other things, this should help allow for an orderly return to production, under IBS' aegis or otherwise, should conditions allow. For Passport readers and our small team, alike, this is a seminal moment. After all, Passport to World Band Radio goes back a quarter century and has had something like a million readers worldwide. But the future has its own rhythm that confounds prognostication. There may yet be more chapters to this story. Stay tuned. Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 A really, really nice TP morning! I just finished reviewing my Perseus recordings and it was nice to be reminded about what can be heard here in suburban Seattle/Tacoma when the propagation is favorable. I had around 25 stations in audio, with lots of hets on other channels too. At 1230 Taiwan Fisheries was in with Chinese on 738, but it wasn't until 1302 (when other signals came in stronger as Walt Salmaniw mentioned) that I caught a bit of Chinese audio on their other 1143 frequency too. I noted 1475 Malaysia again, off and on with audio beginning around 1255. After seeing Walt's chart of TPs for just 1/2 hour of this morning's dawn enhancement, though, I'm seriously envious! What a difference being near the salt water makes. >From my Puyallup perspective, some of the regulars were in with much better than usual audio, and I made MP3s of seven frequencies that I'm going to post on my blog before the evening is over. Re: [IRCA] KRKO TOWERS FALL
This was a big news story on KOMO while I drove to work today. There are several pictures of the damage on KOMO's website http://www.komonews.com/news/local/57260622.html It looks like someone used a large excavator to pull over one of the tower legs. A couple of towers are still standing so KRKO may be using the remaining ones at reduced power. As Pete noted, KRKO is still on the air. I live in their null so they're never all that strong where I live and work The signal sounded about normal (lots of noise) when I was heading to work. The guys in Victoria are in KRKO's main lobe so they might notice a difference. [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 4 Sep 2009
With the late summer heat here (36C or 97F yesterday) it doesn't seem like DX season at all for me yet. Nonetheless, the season is coming and this morning, while not a super morning, was certainly interesting for this early in the season. When I first listened at 1220 UTC the powerful Japanese were again coming in quite well, with 747 and 774 doing the best. A little oddly, 1089 from Sendai was also in with audio for a few minutes, but no trace of any other "second-tier" stuff, although many carriers.By about 1235 things switched to DU, and I noted audio from Australia on 639, 702, 738, and 1116, and New Zealand on 756. A number of other quite strong DU carriers too. As an aside, I checked for TA's last night after Neil's post, but heard only a few minutes of weak audio from 1134 Croatia, and a handful of weak carriers. 73, Nigel Pimblett Dunmore, Alberta. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] EXCELLENT TP Morning - Orcas Island: Sept 4
Lotsa "firsts" this morning, the most important being, this was the first AM where the majority of audio was ABOVE threshold level. It was really a better than average mid-Season AM here. Also like mid-season, the DX also hung around after dawn for at least 10 to 15 minutes... for the first time this season. I did have a few DUs: 585, 612, 675, 756 (also Asian), but mostly, it was East Asian, especially Korea. The most interesting Korean was 603, doing very well (a solid 8). It is listed as the major KBS 2, HLSA in Seoul. 603 is my most open low band channel. I looked back over 5 years of daily charts and there were no mentions of Korean on this channel until the last year or two prior to that., I had the occasional CC or JJ there, but mostly open. Last year was usually open (not even a weak het), but once in a while, BOOM, there was HLSA at about an 8. This year, so far, 603 has been totally open, even the other two mornings when KKs were doing well. I can't believe that the number one KBS2 transmitter would only be used occasionally. I wonder if they are directional south (might make sense from Seoul) but have their directional feed fail from time to time the last year or so??? Or just the propagation goddess up to her usual tricks??? I did hear enough badly distorted audio on 738 to sort of parallel it with 1143. I'm pretty sure old Gary DeB is right on target... Taiwan Fisheries. 810 - I may have had AFN under KGO and the semi-local religious broadcaster, just briefly at dawn. 864: KBS1 was putting in a monster carrier, but was distinctly under modulated. I wonder if the economic downturn is affecting KBS maintenance? Very unusual for them to be anything but perfect. 1350: JOER Hiroshima was in at dawn for the first time this year. They are fairly rare here even at mid-Season and this is their first visit that I've heard this year. 1440: JOWF Sapporo, a more usual visitor, was wiping out the two Oregon stations for the last 10 minutes before LSR. Again, the first this season. Overall, slightly fewer audios than yesterday, but well over half made it to listenable levels this AM. VERY NICE!!! [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 9-4...DX Dropoff
Hello All, Inspired by the great TA reports last night from the Midwest (and yesterday's hot TP conditions here), I was hoping for another great DXing session this morning-- but it was quite a decline from yesterday. Once again DXing with the modified ICF-2010 and the 36" tuned passive loop, I listened from 1300-1330, and found only the powerhouse frequencies (594, 747, 972, 1566 and 1575) with much audio. The "second tier" Asian frequencies which had audio yesterday had only moderate carriers today, and DU's (always pretty tough here) were limited to strong carriers on 639 and 783 (presumably the Kiwi, but never heard with audio). About the only station that was as strong as yesterday was the 738 "ragged carrier" Asiatic TP, which came up in weak audio around 1315 that sounded like Chinese to me (the 1143 Taiwan Fisheries parallel had only a weak carrier at the time). There was audio from 738-Tahiti in the null of the nasty-carrier TP, but only for a short time around 1320. I guess one of the rare advantages of using loops instead of fixed external antennas is that you can easily get a fairly precise bearing on a mystery station, like the 738 problem child. 73, Gary Modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) + 36" Collapsible-frame PVC loop ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] TP for 4Sep09: More DU?
As so often seems to be the case, the phone rang at 11:00 UTC (4:00 am local) for another delivery. I returned about 13:15 to hear the dawn enhancement full bore. From 12:58 until then, the Perseus was busy recording via the W wire which has always performed exceptionally well for the Asian stations, and today seemed to be no exception with both HLAZ 1566 and VOA going strong on 1575. I then switched over to the S directed loop to be rewarded with plenty of DU activity. At 13:32, I'm still hearing 738, but mostly with Australia, and not RFO, although after having 2NR (although the NZ station can't be ruled out), RFO returned at pretty good strength at 13:34. Perhaps conditions are bit more disturbed? SF 69 A5 K2 reported. The Maori station on 765 is still in with good strength at 13:36 as I type this. 783 Access Radio is quite strong too, so seems the NZ stations are really making it up here this morning. Plenty of fun to be had. 801 sounds like Radio Rhema at 13:3! 9...wow, this is late! It's coming in very well too with inspirational vocals. I think this was a mighty fine morning! (just checked and it is Rhema // to internet feed). Things are now faded away at 13:45 or 6:45am local, well past local dawn. A fun, but truncated morning! ...Walt ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] WILY 1210 IL On late last night + a question!
Noted on the Gary de Bock provided (thanks GdB) Eton e-100 was a station mixing w/Philly on 1210 at 0110 ET. Not being immediately able to tell format, I first thought of Guyman but then heard classic rock / oldies and then "AM 1210 WILY" calls. Centralia, IL is not new but rare at LSS and way better sounding than 3 watts. It is new to my not often updated ULR log (not as religious about that as Rob). Question: Is there a way to post to the IRCA reflector from another email address? I was actually at the PC at 1:15 AM ET and could have let someone know about WILY. I guess that I could have sent a "twit" :) to dxer.ca.. 73, Dave in Indy ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
