[IRCA] report from mid-ocean

2009-09-07 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Am presently out in the Pacific, roughly 17 30 N, 157 15W,
using 16 foot on a side triangular ALA 100 driving DR333 and SDR14.Shipboard
electrical noise makes listening very tough from about 800 to 1100 kHz, with
some effect either side, but 1200kHz on up isn't bad.

This morning, around 1500
UT, it wasn't too great, but things improved, with peak around 1550UT. The
Japanese on 1242 was most consistent hanging on until after 1630UT (LSR is
1615UT), and many other Japanese were heard. Some Chinese, Filipino, and
Korean rounded things out; only three Aussies for sure, and no sign of RFO on
738 (just 2NR and Taiwan).

No sign of Guy's signal on 1322, even as a carrier, though there wasn't much
Filipino action overall.

Sure are a lot of Hawaiian stations, but really, I shouldn't be complaining
about their splatter on the 9 kHz channels; it isn't that bad especially
compared with listening at home. Besides, a number of them have some quite TP
sounding programming. KPHI-1130 with Tagalog had me puzzled for a minute or
two...

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 7 Sep 2009

2009-09-07 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Similar to Saturday in that I was hearing TPs and DUs simultaneously,
but unfortunately not similar in terms of signal quality. The TP audio
was limited to the major stations on 594, 693, 747, and 774. 828 was
audible too, but severely impacted by IBOC from 820. On the DU side the
best signal was from ABC Sydney on 702, with audio also noted on 639
(ABC), and 4BC 1116.

At 08:40 AM 9/7/2009, you wrote:

The number of audios was down a bit, the levels were down on the ones that

That being said, its mornings like this one when I try to remember what a

Pacific Ocean.

All of the biggest JJ guns were in well, along with a few others of the usual
suspects at listenable levels, at least briefly.

John Bryant
Orcas Island, WA, USA

From a few km across the water in Victoria, ditto for me, John. Through the
wonders of the Perseus SDR wav files, I monitored the band between 12:58 and
13:32 and in a nutshell: YUK.
All Asian (I was using my 334 degree loop). No signs of the Russians on LW or
MW today. China was fairly poor, but the Japanese and Koreans were there,
albeit not at tremendous levels. I did note that the local IDs for NHK2
stations heard at 13:19:50 were back today (not there yesterday). I do get a
fair amount of noise on this antenna in the lower 150 kHz of spectrum I notice.
Often the ALA 100 is the better low band antenna for me. Here's what I heard
(6 unless otherwise noted):

567: JJ with 7
585: NHK1 at 13:15 at 6+ // to 594
594: up to 8 strength for NHK1 esp at 13:28
612: scratching a 7 later on, but a bit too hard to hear the language with
certainty.
639: strong carrier late (as usual for Fiji) but no audio.
666, 702
738: Presumed Taiwan Fisheries station. Quite strong at 13:00 (7+ anyway)
with the wonky hummy transmitter a la N. Korea!
747: 8 level NHK2
756, 765: both late
774: 9 level NHK2
801: Late
828: 8.5 level NHK2
837: CC station at 7 level by 13:25
846
855: N. Korea at 13:03 at 7
864: perhaps local noise, but a fairly wide spike. Could also look like a
jammer, but I'm not sure.
873: 8 level NHK2. This one has performed well this year for me.
963
972: 9 level for presumed S. Korea at 13:08
1008
1053: Very strong jammer noted around 13:08
1134, 1143
1251: My mystery station. Only a weak 7, but strong carrier at 13:07 and
still there at 13:18 with weak talking. Not sure who.
1269
1287: 8 level Hokkaido station by 13:18. The northern JJ stations seem to be
better than a week or two ago.
1314, 1332.As for Guy's mystery station on 1322, I can see the carrier but
only weakly at 13:09 and 13:19 recheck.
1422, 1512
1566: HLAZ at 9 level with website mentioned at 13:12. I may also have
another local noise source with a spike on 1568
1575, 1593

That's it for this morning. Nothing spectacular, that's for sure, and I'm
happy that I didn't get up too early to experience the disappointment! Then
again, John is so right. Another few months from now, and one will be lucky to
hear anything! .Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

[IRCA] Best Morning Yet for 1322 kHz Unid. Station

2009-09-07 Thread Guy Atkins
Although TP DX conditions were again depressed, I was pleased with the best
level yet on the 1322 kHz station I've been following for a week. Below is
what I heard this morning from 1235-1335 UTC via Perseus recordings...most
were a 6 or 7 on the 10 scale, meaning threshold or poor audio. Some
second-tier Japanese synchros heard, though.

594 JOAK Tokyo JJ

657 Rst. Mayak, Chita Russia - pres. with RR lang.

693 JOAB Tokyo JJ

738 Taiwan in CC, parallel 1143 at 1325. JJ synchros noted here at 1305

747 JOIB Sapporo JJ, parallel 774

774 JOUB Akita JJ, parallel 747

828 JOBB Osaka JJ

972 HLCA S. Korea in KK 1235-1335

1017 UNIDENTIFIED - perhaps JJ

1053 S. Korean jammer, good to vy. good 1235-1335; no sign of VONS N. Korea
audio

1134 JOQR Tokyo

1143 Taiwan in CC, parallel 738 at 1325

1269 JOHW Obihiru JJ, presumed, parallel to 1287 (JOFM Esashi also relays
1287 per PAL, but it's much weaker at 1 kW; JOHW is a 5 kW outlet so more
likely the one heard)

1287 JOHR Sapporo JJ

1322 UNIDENTIFIED - best morning yet for my mystery station, but still along
way from providing identifying details. The signal popped up with audio at
1308-1314, playing a rather mournful, bass-heavy pop song that reminded me
strongly of the dangdut style music from Indonesia (Malay, Arabic, and
Hindustani influences). The signal faded until 1330-1335 when I realized I
was hearing a live or recorded concert, with crowd noises, cheering, and
band members talking to the audience between songs. Despite the best signal
yet, the audio was still murky and I put the Edirol UA-25 sound card and
Sennheiser headphones to good use, trying to get the best audio recovery
possible. I'll be posting a MP3 recording of 1322 kHz on my blog later
today. Hopefully someone else in the Pacific NW can hear this one better
than I am hearing the station...it would be great to pinpoint that is is
indeed DXAD in Marawi City, Philipines.

1422 JORF Yokohama JJ

1566 HLAZ Cheju South Korea in KK, never rose above a 6

1575 Absent! Surprised to find only an occasional het, no audio from VOA
Thailand

1593 UNID - possible JJ language here

[IRCA] report from mid-ocean, 7 Sept

2009-09-07 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
First off, information for Powell, the vessel is R/P FLIP, an oceanographic
research platform; it isn't self powered, so drifts with ocean currents and
wind. Your favorite search engine will tell you more about this rather strange
beast. It's part of an experiment with the oddly appropriate acronym of
RaDyO.

So, the radyo reception this morning was different from yesterday. Quite a few
more Australians were heard as well as one New Zealander (presumed; Indian mx on
1386). These were not just 702 and 1548 which were quite good, but also ones
such as 1341 (2HH?) and 1413 //1512.

Overall signal levels may have been down, as more shipboard electrical noise was
noted at the higher frequencies in the band. But there were still some good
signals from China, e.g. 1593, and an English news broadcast on 1323 after
1600UT, which although it was somewhat DU accented had a number of items about
ChinaNingbo RGD News is listed w/ EE news at this time, which I've never
heard before. However, foreign sounding EE was noted on 1323 before the hour
also, so maybe it was something from CRI? Also my first time hearing Chinese on
1179. 1089 and 1530 also had CC; only the former heard yesterday.

The Japanese were down quite a bit, though the 1287 parallels on 1404 and 1449
were dug out of the murk just the same.

There was also a mystery on 1539, which was in an unID language, not made any
easier by Honolulu on 1540. Have to find time to listen to the recording.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] unID 720 - Dennis Prager SRN News

2009-09-07 Thread Chernos Saul

Some info on Dennis Prager, for those keeping track of this unID late-night
signal on 720. I'd heard it at Burnt River ON last night (Sunday night
September 6); others have also reported it.

www.dennisprager.com - Prager's own web site

www.srnradio.com/talk/talk-prager.shtml - Prager's affiliation with Salem

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Prager - An entry for Prager at Wikipedia

Before hearing this unID on 720, I'd not recognized anything more than the
name, and vaguely at that - was not even sure how to spell it. I could not
discern the nature of the programming - from my limited signal I am lucky to
have come up with a poorly spelled name that worked out to something familiar
for a couple of you (Thanks!). From these three sites it would seem he is a
Conservative phone-in talk show host, religious-based (in this case Jewish).

I can't find any affiliate lists, thus far. I checked daytimer program
schedules for WWII PA and WGCR NC, and they only list programming from 6 am to
sunset. SRN News would seem to rule out WVCC GA, and its sked lists only the
major Conservative show hosts, and also daytime only.

I would like to rule out WQTH Clarement NH and WVOA Dewitt NY. These are both
CPs and I have seen no reports mentioning them being on or testing. Perhaps the
status has changed for one of them.

I think I have heard the GA NC and PA stations well past sunset at various
times. I have them all logged here, anyhow.

This was coming in from either north or northwest of Chicago, or something
generally south and/or east of me.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 9-7... Mediocre on any Antenna

2009-09-07 Thread Walter Salmaniw

Hello All,

The ambitious plan here on this holiday morning was to test out the new 9'
sided PVC box loop here in actual TP DXing, as rotated on a heavy-duty PVC
support base in the back yard. After serious labor in preparation for this
Labor Day test, everything was ready to go at 1200 UTC-- except for the TP
signals.

The monster box loop was able to provide serious gain for this morning's
anemic TP's, but as John, Walt, Nigel and Dennis have already reported, the
signal levels were dreary at best. No matter what the antenna, if the
propagation is tanking, your DX results will tank along with it.

At the peak of a very modest dawn enhancement (around 1315), weak audio was
heard on 657-Pyongyang, 666-JOBK, 738-Taiwan (with the buzzing carrier)
and 972-HLCA, with strong audio on 594-JOAK, 747-JOIB and 828-JOBB. After
the lackluster Asian TP's faded at 1330, the monster loop was swung around
for DU's, and weak audio from 738-Tahiti was heard, along with a strong
carrier from 639-Fiji, and a moderate carrier from 648-Rhema-- among other
moderate-carrier Kiwis and Aussies.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 9-7... Mediocre on any Antenna

2009-09-07 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Walt,

Thanks very much for your comments about the large experimental box loops.

Quite a few photos and detailed construction information on these monsters
is contained in the related 14-page article, which the editors of NRC and
MWC have kindly agreed to print in their club bulletins (Nick, with his busy
schedule, is still looking it over for the IRCA Technical Column).

I think the loop design would be very suitable for hanging from the
ceiling of the cottage at Haida Gwaii, assuming that you don't have too much
electrical wiring in the vicinity. The PVC frames were specifically designed
for light weight, so that even the 9' sided loop weighs only about 16 pounds.
The article gives detailed construction steps for building any of ten
different-sized tuned passive loops, from 18 to 9'. Actually, John also
mentioned about disguising one of these as a chandelier, and hanging it from
the
ceiling at Orcas :)

 Hello All,

The ambitious plan here on this holiday morning was to test out the new

this
Labor Day test, everything was ready to go at 1200 UTC-- except for the
TP

The monster box loop was able to provide serious gain for this
morning's
anemic TP's, but as John, Walt, Nigel and Dennis have already reported,
the
signal levels were dreary at best. No matter what the antenna, if the
propagation is tanking, your DX results will tank along with it.

At the peak of a very modest dawn enhancement (around 1315), weak audio

After
the lackluster Asian TP's faded at 1330, the monster loop was swung
around
for DU's, and weak audio from 738-Tahiti was heard, along with a strong
carrier from 639-Fiji, and a moderate carrier from 648-Rhema-- among

[IRCA] Tip for WDXR

2009-09-07 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

Been spending time on 1510 lately because KGA is frequently missing or way down
in the mud. Normally it's a big pest up here. I was hearing sports programming
and thinking it was KGA, I heard this ID:

1510 WWZN MA, Boston, barely above the noise floor with full ID
WWZN-1510-Boston at 04:00EDT 9/7

First time I've heard a MA station here in a long long time, and first new one
heard this season.

Some info on Dennis Prager, for those keeping track of this unID
late-night signal on 720. I'd heard it at Burnt River ON last night
(Sunday night September 6); others have also reported it.

www.dennisprager.com - Prager's own web site

www.srnradio.com/talk/talk-prager.shtml - Prager's affiliation with
Salem

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Prager - An entry for Prager at
Wikipedia

Before hearing this unID on 720, I'd not recognized anything more
than the name, and vaguely at that - was not even sure how to spell
it. I could not discern the nature of the programming - from my
limited signal I am lucky to have come up with a poorly spelled
name that worked out to something familiar for a couple of you
(Thanks!). From these three sites it would seem he is a
Conservative phone-in talk show host, religious-based (in this case
Jewish).

I can't find any affiliate lists, thus far. I checked daytimer
program schedules for WWII PA and WGCR NC, and they only list
programming from 6 am to sunset. SRN News would seem to rule out
WVCC GA, and its sked lists only the major Conservative show hosts,
and also daytime only.

I would like to rule out WQTH Clarement NH and WVOA Dewitt NY.
These are both CPs and I have seen no reports mentioning them being
on or testing. Perhaps the status has changed for one of them.

I think I have heard the GA NC and PA stations well past sunset at
various times. I have them all logged here, anyhow.

This was coming in from either north or northwest of Chicago, or
something generally south and/or east of me.

I still vote for WVCC, because (1) Arbitron says they are affiliated
with both Fox News and SRN, and (2) WVCC carries the Dennis Prager
show, according to their website at http://720thevoice.com. They
don't mention any programming between 9 pm and 6 am, but that's not
too surprising.

Not needed here, so I won't sweat it.

Barry

Re: [IRCA] 1568 Spike

2009-09-07 Thread Guy Atkins

 Hi Nigel and Walt,

I found the spike on my Perseus recordings from this morning also. It peaks
for me right at 1312:30 - 1330 UTC. I **think** I might even detect a scrap
of audio on the frequency at 1300 exactly. (Using very narrow BW of course,
between 1566 and 1570).

Hmm... per PAL the only possibility I see is DYMP in Palo, Philippines,
listed as variable on 1567 kHz.

I suppose it *is* a possibility, given that I am likely hearing DXADD Marawi
City on 1322 kHz.
