[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-13... Improving
Hello All, The sunrise TP propagation was definitely improved from yesterday, and there was audio on several frequencies that are usually not productive. The UnID Chinese (male) was back on 684 kHz with his talk monolog at 1441, and he seemed to be quite animated until 1445, when 670-KBOI turned on its IBOC to silence him. This 684 kHz Chinese always shows up on mornings with great propagation, so at least he is a harbinger of good DX, even if he stays unknown. Around 1450 the usually weak 1503 kHz had threshold audio from a presumed JOUK, but without enough signal to check a parallel. The frequency is splatter-free here, but almost always a paltry carrier. Frequent but weak co-channel TP's were heard under several big guns from 1455-1500, including the music-oriented KBS1 under 594-JOAK, Chinese music (with female announcer) under 828-JOBB, and Chinese male talk under 972-HLCA. A check was made for another elusive co-channel under 693-JOAB, but CBU splatter was too much to dig out anything weak. The NHK stations did have very good audio this morning in general, despite the co-channel competition. So it was a fairly good TP morning here, even if no new Asians were logged. For mid-November propagation, it's best to be thankful for the TP's you still have, and enjoy them while you can :-) 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' PVC tuned passive loop (in the rainy back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] TP for 13 Nov from Victoria, BC
Listened again for about an hour from 1405 UT, today, and although there were lots of signals, there was lots of domestic splatter as well, so DXing wasn't particularly productive. Any sunrise enhancement seemed mostly due to a minor drop off in that splatter, followed by fairly quick decay in signals past 1500UT. A quick visit back to the radio yielded a nice call ID and s/off chimes from JOUB-774, but there wasn't much else by then. At the same time, my impression was that some DX was lurking there between 1400 and 1500UT, with several expected CNR-1 channels not giving CNR-1 audio, just at quite a poor level. pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 279 R. [IRCA] Tecsun PL-380 AM Heterodynes (or lack thereof)
Hello All, There have been several questions regarding the new Tecsun PL-380's susceptibility to internally-generated AM-band heterodynes, a quirk affecting of all the S/L 4734 DSP chip radios (PL-300WT/G8, D92L, D96L and PL-310) manufactured so far. Although a full review of the Tecsun PL-380 is being drafted, for those considering a quick purchase, a comparison was made of the internally generated heterodynes showing up on the PL-310, and on the new PL-380. Although there is only one PL-380 review model here currently, at least on this single model, the AM heterodyne issue seems to have been reduced from the PL-310's problem level. Tecsun has obviously changed some of the circuitry in the PL-380 so that in general the heterodynes are less obtrusive, although they still do exist on the AM band. The heterodynes in both models can be reduced or eliminated by switching the DSP filtering down to 1 or 2 kHz, although whether this solution will be acceptable probably depends on the type of DXing done by the user (for 9 kHz-split DXers, it would probably work fine). During daytime testing here, both the PL-310 and PL-380 have a moderate 2 kHz heterodyne on 621 kHz (with 620-KPOJ at a medium level). On 1404 khz the PL-310 has a moderate 1 kHz heterodyne, while the PL-380 has none. Both units have a weak 1kHz heterodyne on 1430 kHz (with a medium level Bremerton station on the frequency). The PL-310 has also has a 1 kHz heterodyne on 1431, while the PL-380 has none. (NOTE: Because of its soft-mute-free operation, the PL-380 will typically receive a 1430 kHz domestic station at a good level on both 1429 and 1431 kHz, whereas on the PL-310 the soft mute function will cause a severe drop off in 1430 kHz signal strength on these frequencies, leaving mostly the internally-generated heterodynes). On 1602 kHz the PL-310 has a strong 1 kHz heterodyne (with a moderate KVRI-KOHI mix on 1600 kHz), while the PL-380 has none. On 1640 kHz, however, I did find a moderate 2 kHz heterodyne on the PL-380 that was absent on the PL-310 (the only frequency on the AM band that I could detect such a situation). Since there is only one PL-380 review model here, the sample base is limited, and other PL-380 users (Roy in Australia, and Rob in London, Ontario) may wish to add their comments. There already seems to be an AM sensitivity difference between my PL-380 and Roy's model, based on comparisons with the PL-310's we both have (my own PL-380 seems equally sensitive on AM with my two PL-310s, but Roy's does not). Since our current sample base is limited, two more PL-380's have been ordered from eBay's Anon-co, to give us a clearer picture of the AM sensitivity situation on this model. In general, the PL-380 here has performed like a dream in TP-DXing, and may well be the ultimate $45 bargain in AM-DXing history. 73 and Best Wishes, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Back in the 'day' as in 1976, TA's on the West Coast were treated like nectar... It was a big deal - Nick and I both heard our first TA's ever from Victoria on the same night... Breathless phone calls were exchanged... notes were compared the next day... It was revolutionary. Now it is routine. Still, some of the openings are still awe inspiring... especially on limited equipment or antennas... And thought provoking too because we never had so much to pick from as we do now - and not sure why. Guess it is what it is. [IRCA] Report from Tauranga, New Zealand
Haven't checked in for a few days, mostly because we've been doing a lot of touring and there hasn't been a lot of time for DXing. In Wellington, I had a wonderful day with David Ricquish who kindly spent half of his day taking me around this wonderful city and showing me all of the radio sights of the city. David has an absolutely encyclopedic knowledge of radio in the region and I was delighted in his immediate responses to my barrage of questions. We started the morning with a tour of RNZI including meeting with Adrian Sainsbury, host of RNZI's Mailbox program, as well as an introduction to Myra Oh, his co-host (a very charming lady who was busy with her on-air duties). David went on to describe the radio scene in the country. Basically, for a DXer from afar, it's not a very pretty picture. Call signs have pretty much been done away with, and there are only a small handful of nation-wide networks. No TOH legal IDs, and the only local content are the occasional inserted local ads. I must admit that the content of several of the networks are not my cup of tea. For instance Radio Trackside mostly just has play by play horse races (yawn!). Another network is The Word which has non-stop Bible reading. The are precious few local stations anymore. One is Village Radio on 1368 in Tauranga which I recorded for a good hour, as this frequency is mostly dominated by Radio Live in Napier. Village Radio had a wonderful oldies format and a full local ID at 5:00 pm local and a call sign as well, 1XT. Refreshing to say the least. They apparently broadcast with 400 watts during the week and 900 watts on weekends (since they bleed onto cell phones), using a simple dipole antenna. John Durham in Tauranga provided me with a link which is: http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/fozzie/id18.htm . Might be worth a try. David told me that there are only 2 local AM stations left in the nation. I do have to ask him about the various stations listed in PAL, though, as many of them do sound local. David? By the way, David (and Adrian) were also a goldmine of information about Pacific Island stations. For instance, 2AP in Samoa on 540 is running 2.5 kW and the facility is held together by rat dung. Cook Islands on 630 is likewise running at 1/2 power. The Solomon Islands SW transmitter on 5020 is back on the air thanks to the technical assistance from Adrian who was able to tweak the transmitter back to 5020 from previous 5018v. It's the 9 MHz transmitter tuned down to 5 MHz (very old). Vanuatu 3945 will shortly be adding 5050 for the day frequency, and plan 7260 during the winter. As always, I would recommend anyone who is traveling in this area of the world to bring their portables and enjoy what the region has to offer on the radio. Being so far from North America and Europe, I think that our fellow DXers appreciate us making the effort to contact them as well. One more interesting anecdote: The ODXA journal came close to being printed and mailed from New Zealand a few years back, as it was cheaper than doing the same in Ontario! Amazing! Finally, I learned that the Radio Heritage Project (which hosts the invaluable Pacific Asia List) is a labour of love initiated by David Ricquish, who's given up his previous travel, radio and television career (along with his wife) to devote his time fully to this wonderful project. I encourage everyone to support this vital project! 73s from the South Pacific,...Walt Salmaniw ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] Decent TA night in NW Washington 13 Nov 2009
Hi all: Pretty good propagation into the house here tonight, competing with the washing machine, computers and other noise makers. At one point or another most channels had some sort of het. Identified stations tonight: 693 - UK: good signal from BBC 5 talking about UK matters at 0354 UTC 855 - Romania: R. Actualitati, verified with web stream, 963 - Finland: Pori station with Russian program decent at 0420-0430 UTC 1134 - Croatia: pretty good all night, HUGE at about 0417, //7375 1215 - UK: Absolute Radio in nicely around 0250, //web stream 1269 - Germany: Deutschlandfunk in and out all night, armchair copy at 0417 with 1270 fairly quiet tonight, //web stream 1575 - Radio Farda verified with web stream, decent at times I had big carriers on 549, 819 and 1341 most of the session, but strong domestics kept me from getting anything from them. Just a little while ago (0710 UTC) I'm pretty sure I had Radio Maria on 675, near its local sunrise, and 1269-Germany as well, so quite a night for TAs!
