Re: [IRCA] BOG question
On Friday 04 December 2009 01:01:39 pm Nick Hall-Patch wrote: Both radios have two terminals, which one would I put the end of the BOG into (not using coax)? An old Hallicrafters that I had as a kid had a similar A1 / A2 setup and a little metal blade that would short out A2, if desired. Would plugging the BOG wire directly into one would work and would I need to do a small jumper from that one to the other one (A2)? Thanks. This was a common setup on receivers that were designed to use either a balanced or an unbalanced antenna. The A1 and A2 terminals go (via the band switch) to the antenna winding on the receiver RF amplifier circuit's input coil. These receivers brought both sides of the antenna input winding of this coil to the rear panel, so that the user could select the appropriate configuration. For a balanced antenna, the ground strap is omitted and the antenna connected to A1 and A2. If the antenna is unbalanced, the antenna (usually, but it generally does not matter) goes to the A1 terminal. The A2 terminal, the other side of the antenna coupling winding, is shorted to ground by the A2-Ground jumper. If an external ground was used for the antenna, then the ground connection was generally made to the A2 terminal and the chassis ground jumper omitted. But again, test it for the best signal on any given antenna. What the A2-Ground jumper is doing is providing a return connection for the (unused on a single wire antenna) other connection of the input coupling coil. Most of the time, if you omit the jumper, the coupling decreases and the input signal levels drop. But again try it. You always get some capacitive coupling even with one end of the input coil disconnected. And with a balanced antenna, the other half of the antenna is providing a complimentary current flow into the second terminal of the input coil. Hope that made sense. [IRCA] Tecsun PL-310 and PL-380 AM Sensitivity Shootout
Hello All, As part of a detailed review of the new Tecsun PL-380 DSP model, a thorough AM sensitivity comparison was made with its PL-310 predecessor on 10 different AM band fringe stations during noontime ground wave conditions here in Puyallup, WA today. The objective was to confirm the general impression that the live-signal AM sensitivity of the two models is essentially equal, after Roy's reports (in Australia) that the PL-310 had a significant advantage in signal strength readings shown on the models' digital displays. Although the full details will be reported in the upcoming PL-380 review, it was discovered that the PL-310 model does have a slight but definite AM sensitivity advantage on the mid-band frequencies (only). Fringe test stations on 750 (KXL), 980 (CKNW), 1110 (KWDB), 1320 (CHMB), and 1390 (KJOX) did have slightly stronger signals on the PL-310 than on the PL-380, although on the extreme high and low band signals on 530 (TIS), 620 (KPOJ), 1520 (KGDD) and 1640 (KDZR) the live signal audio quality was the same. In reference to the Kchibo D96L model (the sensitivity winner of the 2009 Shooutout), the new PL-380 was found equivalent in mid-band AM sensitivity, but slightly less sensitive than the Kchibo model on the extreme high and low band frequencies. In the overall AM sensitivity comparison of the three top DSP ultralight models, the D96L has the best sensitivity on the extreme high and low band, while the PL-310 has the best sensitivity on the mid-band frequencies. The DSP-enhanced selectivity of all three models is equal, although the PL-380's freedom from the soft-mute issue does provide a significant DXing advantage, especially for 9 kHz-split DXing enthusiasts. Since transoceanic DXers typically use effective external antennas, stock AM selectivity is of less importance than the ability to minimize domestic splatter. 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
