Bill,

1330 could also have been Portland, as they do run some SS rel pgms, but
I don't know their sked. 1260 was likely KLYC s they are oldies.

2010-02-03 Thread bill kral
At about 5:30 PM PST on 02-03-10, 1260 was dominant with 60/s music instead of
the usual ESPN from CFRN Edmonton .The only oldies here are out of
Mcminnville,OR on KLYC but no positive ID since the songs were continuous. The
Ed. station must have hung a left or right and did not come this way. Also,on
1330 at 6:30 PM I heard SS but have no clue from where.I doubt it was KWKW L.A.
with sports as it did not sound like it. It might have been KLBS Los
Banos,CA,with SS instead of Portugese.A third choice could be a changed format
on a closer by station in WA.Hard to say since they don't ID until TOH or leave
a clue like city name. Two new ones here for me.Bill in BC

[IRCA] 1040 wandering het

2010-02-03 Thread Fred Schroyer
Gentleman, thank you all for your monitoring & thoughts on this little
enigma! I have not heard the het today (WED), either day or night. But I
think Barry nailed it. WJTB near Cleveland fits what I've observed for
signal strength (strong at night, weak during day -- I'm about 140 miles
from their QTH) and direction. If they leave their carrier on at night,
that's it. They sure could use some maintenance! Not only are they several
hundred hertz off-frequency, but that random frequency drift is pretty
entertaining. Guess they oughta replace that oscillator tube, or maybe try
using something innovative like a crystal with it!

 Hi Colin,

Some of the small ceramic filters from NTK and Murata have extra ground
pins. I've seen them with three or four ground pins (connected in parallel
internally, evidently), plus the usual I/O pins.

I have a Murata catalog (PDF) that has specifications and pin-out diagrams
of many ceramic filters. If you'd like a copy, let me know and I'll send it
your way.

Does this mean a change of format; maybe they will sign off fer good.

[IRCA] TP for 3 Feb from Victoria, BC

2010-02-03 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not as good as yesterday, but not too bad. Again, the longer one stuck around,
the more DX there seemed to be, but I didn't stick around as much this morning:
stopped by the radio just before 1400UT, for some minutes around 1430 and 1500UT
also

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK
774 JOUB
828 JOBB

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

747 JOIB

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker

666 JOBK //594
873 JOGB //828
972 presumed HLCA
1134 not //972 or 4460, so most likely JOQR
1575 VoA at 1437

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

279 presumed R.Rossii, big carrier, poor audio; not usual for this to be
undermodulated, unless Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was just open carrier, and Selenginsk
was riding in on it. (dream on)
603
621
639 CNR-1 //4460
648
846
918 CC pips at 1500UT
1017, could have been CRI //5965, but too much splash to be sure
1053 traces of the KK jammer
1287
1323

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

864, 936, 1251, 1566

best wishes,

Nick

Just minutes ago did some quick nulling with YB400 outside and this
tone can be nulled roughly E/W from here. This would support WJRB 1040 located

Re: [IRCA] MORE BAD NEWS FOR FM DXERS

2010-02-03 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Is that thick dust on the tops of the eqipment in the first photo?
Maybe a dust bunny will short some stuff out in the IBOC chain. :)

73,
Dave in Indy who DX's around as much IBOC as he can in the Midwest.
690, 1060, 1080 and 1110 are the most I-BLOCked channels.

You can blame it on these. They are KSL's I-Block equipment:

Yes, KEX's IBOC is terrible, but the worst at night here is KSL, hands
down. between 1160 & 1190, often, it wipes out the 1170-1180 area
easily, depending on cx. Sometimes, the frequencies are decent too.

Re: [IRCA] Tone on 1040 / wandering 1040 het

2010-02-03 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
John Reiger, from DX MidAmerica (a nice site, you should check it out
(http://www.angelfire.com/wi/dxmidamerica/) asked Michael Procop from
the Cleveland area about the weird tones / het on 1040. He thinks that
it was WJTB, as Barry McLarnon had speculated. ***Michael said that he
didn't notice it last night*** I didn't check last night, either.

I asked John to pass along my thanks to Michael for his input on this.
Thanks John!

Re: [IRCA] KBIS

2010-02-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Don,

Back in the 80s, both KVAC and their FM QSL'd. I never sent them a
report until then. KBIS-Forks, I got a ppc back. It took several tries.
KVAC QSL'd on my first try. Had a nice letterhead. The GM seemed to like
DXers, at that time at least.

Re: [IRCA] KBIS

2010-02-03 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
Here's a poor attempt at oneupsmanship, sorry bout that :-) . I
verified KLRA-1010-Little Rock AR on 3/22/52 from Galva, Iowa. KBIS's
former call of KVAC did me dirt. I used to hear them like a local on
their f/c from Sacramento in the late 60s. I sent many reports and
follow-ups but to no avail.

I had to go check, and I have:

KLRA 11/65 card & letter (mentioned I heard them on my Zenith Trans
Oceanic, which I don't remember. hi.) (was 16 at the time, this was from
Seward AK)

KBIS 03/93 letter

KSYG 02/95 letter

If I remember correctly, this was shortly before they signed off forever
to make room for 1010 WINS NY to boost their coverage.
