[IRCA] TA's never say die.

2010-02-08 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Given that there was no evidence of TA's earlier this evening, I'm happy to

Mind you, fair audio on 738, FF talk from Tahiti, if you want to listen from

[IRCA] Good eastern conditions

2010-02-08 Thread Nigel Pimblett
With the lack of TA action over the past month I've been focusing
more on North American DX, and have been using the Wellbrook array to
the east lately, with the Perseus recording on the hour overnight..
Most nights have only yielded the regulars, but last night proved to be
a winner, as I caught four new ones:

1370 WSPD Toledo, OH
1380 WKJG Fort Wayne, IN
1420 KBTN Neosho, MO
1430 KZQZ St. Louis, MO

Hearing WKJG through KOTA was especially surprising. Also noted a
couple of others that are not new, but certainly rare: WARF 135O Akron,
OH and WROK 1440 Rockford, IL.

Just curious how many of you, and where, are hearing the following at
night?

560 CFOS ON Owen Sound -- In my logbook but not heard in years

630 CFCO ON Chatham - In my logbook, first heard in 1987
but not heard in years

920 CKNX ON Wingham --- Probably nightly. I first
uncovered this one during the first ULR contest (2008?) and have heard
many times since. Wonder why it took 25+ years to log and now they are
almost always there?

1070 CHOK ON Sarnia -- Probably always there but I have WFNI (50
Kw D / 10 Kw N) at 18 miles. Sarnia is there but way under the local

1150 CKOC ON Hamilton --- nightly

790 WLSV NY Wellsviille - never logged

840 W... VA Earlysville never logged

940 WGRP PA Greenville -- never logged (may have better luck
w/Montreal gone but WCPC-MS is always in at LSS.

Speaking of WCPC, Houston, MS. Does *everyone* East of the Mississippi
get them at LSS? They are a pest and were even so before Montreal went
off.

[IRCA] TP for 8 Feb from Victoria, BC

2010-02-08 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

I believe I was more in Bill's than Nigel's camp this morning, though at 1405UT,
JOBB-828 maxed out pretty nicely for a short time. At any rate, checked around
1400UT, and a couple more times before another brief session at 1520UT.
Earlier, the big guns were in, but generally not strong, and 648 had weak audio
as did 639(seemed //4460). Later, 945 briefly came up as CNR-1 //4460, but
1593 seemed //828 rather than 4460, and 1503 was JOUK //594. Call it erratic
conditions, and not particularly strong signals.

I also ran across this one last night, with surprisingly good audio around
0400 UTC. The rest of the TA signals were spotty to say the least, but 756
Germany was a standout on the low end.

Strangely enough, up here in the Great White North, we have little snow left
on the ground, and haven't had more than a dusting of the white stuff in the
past month. Something's not right!

747 Japan (the best signal today)

As I remember back in the 80s, it came up for a vote in the IRCA and
most wanted the Domestic columns left in ELT.
I think a vote today would probably get the same results as we have more
Domestic DXers than Foreign DXers in the clubs.

ALGERIA: Full Data QSL (though transmitter sites not identified as I had
requested) received from Radiodiffusion Algerienne 531 and 549 for a DEC 12
report, an IRC was enclosed and sent to Radio Algerienne, 21 Boulevard des
Martyrs, Alger, Ageria. This is Country 52 verified of the 70 I've heard.
531 is my most popular TA channel, with four stations heard there. You may
recall that the 549 signal appeared suddenly this season, a new transmitter.

[IRCA] Benin 1566

2010-02-08 Thread Bill Whitacre
TA's aren't what they were during the fall but 'gems' can still be had.

Last night, while testing out a new VSPE/Perseus Recording Scheduler [PRS]
config I made a TOH recording of the band at 0300utc with the Wellbrook array
'pointing' east.

Other than some slow-fade signals on 1431, 1512, 1521, 1548 and 1575 there
wasn't much special until I got to 1566 where I found a pretty good carrier, a
short guitar IS and English/French ID for TWR Benin:

This despite the Wellbrook array being buried in at least 30" of snow in
various parts of our yard and the east element buried in a 4" hedge FULL of
snow along our driveway -- including the base unit! Amazing!

All this only works when/if you have power though ... which we didn't for about
12 hours on Saturday.

To me, the problem is less one of ELT vs PLT than it is a different LT for each
column or worse yet for each reporter. As long as all of the domestic DX
columns march to the same drum it doesn't matter which drum it is.
