[IRCA] DU this morning?

2010-08-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not much in the way of DU results this morning from the present geomagnetic
storm. There were a few of the usual carriers scattered across the band, with
1116 the only one delivering audio traces. That one seems very well
modulated, as its carrier strength wasn't really any stronger than any of the
others.

best wishes,

Nick

2010-08-04 Thread Kevin S
Hey Nick:

Last week near Seaside, OR, 1116 was often the strongest het as well.
However, since 1120-KPNW just down the road was unnullable with its sky
and ground paths, I wasn't able to extract any audio on the Tecsun PL-380
(which isn't SSB and so couldn't select only the USB...).

[IRCA] CHTK-560 Prince Rupert BC applies to CRTC to move to FM

2010-08-04 Thread Deane McIntyre
CHTK-560 Prince Rupert BC has applied to the CRTC to move to FM
(99.1 MHz, 160 watts, 578 meters):

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2010/2010-551.htm#20

Application by Astral Media Radio (Toronto) Inc. and 4382072 Canada Inc.,
partners
in a general partnership carrying on business as Astral Media Radio G.P. for a
broadcasting licence to operate a new FM radio programming undertaking to
replace
the existing AM station, CHTK Prince Rupert.

The new station would operate on frequency 99.1 MHz (channel 256A) with an
effective
radiated power of 160 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height
of antenna
above average terrain of 578 metres).

The applicant requests permission to simulcast the programming of the new FM
station on
CHTK for a period of three months from the date of implementation of the new FM
station.

The applicant also requests, pursuant to sections 9(1)(e) and 24(1) of the
Broadcasting Act,
the revocation of the licence for CHTK effective at the end of the simulcast
period.

2010-08-04 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Interesting news, indeed. During the day, the only stations on AM currently
heard at my cottage are KTKN on 930 (the strongest), then CBC Terrace on
860, and finally 560 CHTK which is still relatively strong during the day.
Otherwise, we occasionally hear Sitka on 580 and Terrace on 590, and that's
about it. Should open up 558 and 567 a bit during dawn

CFXG-1230 Grand Cache AB, the 50 watt relay of CFXE-FM Edson AB, has
applied to the CRTC to move to FM (93.3 MHz, 190 watts, minus 81.7 meters

Bummer! At 176 miles, this is my closest unheard. Only been trying for it
for 35 years and never even a hint. Never heard it when I lived in Fox
Creek either, and that town was 77 miles nearer to Grand Cache than my
current location. Not really surprising as a few miles either side of town
it's gone from the car radio. Lets hope the FM will reach out a little
further.

I was wondering when TK was going to ask to move. Both 560's will be now
gone, as Ft. St. Johns BC moved a few years ago. The two used to mix all

Lots of T-storm static keeping me from DXing as much as I'd like to have in

Lots of fade ins and outs on the regionals and GYs. 1500 is fun with WQCR (no

Certainly some of the standard AU catches were in tonight here in
southern Alberta (like XEB owning 1220), but certainly nothing terribly
exciting. Perhaps the most interesting reception was a nice ID from
CA's KNRY on 1240. The auroral effect seemed stronger last night, with
more Mexican signals noted..

[IRCA] 1566 carrier 0400 ut

2010-08-04 Thread Don Moman VE6JY
Been meaning to check this and other frequencies Nick has been hearing
hets in the summer evenings. After an enjoyable chat and lunch with
Nick at the BCDX 2010 convention in Vancouver, I vowed to check when I
got home. Of course, the significant solar disturbance that has
everyone talking coincided with my return..

Anyway last night's monitoring of 1566 936 783 yielded nothing. The
last 2 are certainly not in the clear around here but not impossible
with the narrow band waterfall display. Surprisingly at 0400 tonite
1566 had an easily discernable het, altho pretty smeared (seems less
smeared now at 0430). Nothing on 936 783.
