 Folks,

Was wondering when it made sense to say something. Now that things are
 better,
 it's time.

A week ago last Thursday, I finally went to my Dr for my blood test results
(after waiting a week, waaay too long).

Anyway, my Testosterone was still low. We checked and in 2008, it was in the
normal range, so it had significantly dropped (apparently didn't have the
 2009
results handy - I have a full physical every year since it's covered by my
insurance). I started on Testosterone gel that Thursday. By last Monday, I
 was
starting to feel better, by Wednesday I was feeling very good, today I'm
 fairly
certain that I'm back to normal. I'm told I will get even better... does that
mean I will be better than before I got sick??? We shall see.

I spent a lot of my down time working on my radio sticker collection,
 hi

I'll be DXing during my commute soon and will try to do some over the
 weekend.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.. VERY MUCH appreciated.

Let's hit the dials... the season has started and it is looking pretty good
 so
 far..

2010-09-04 Thread Nigel Pimblett
A hair better than yesterday, with a good number of carriers, but
still little in the way of audio. Listened from 1215 to 1300, and for
the first 15 minutes noted decent carriers on 693, 747, 774, so suspect
the first signs of Asians here. The lower band died quickly after that
however, and the only audio heard was on 1116 (4BC), and on 1566, which
seemed to have traces of Australia mixing with traces of what sounded
like Korea, so further evidence of some Asian activity.

I didn't hear WJJL at my QTH last night. However, earlier in the evening I
did hear WZYX Cowan TN on 1440, 66 watt night power authorization, carrying
 Franklin County HS football. :-)

WJJL used to be a near-nightly regular back in the days when they routinely
used day power 24/7. As Kaz points out they were fined for doing so, and I
believe at some point they changed ownership. I haven't heard them for a

[IRCA] Spanish 1580 mystery identified

2010-09-04 Thread Glenn Hauser
** U S A. 1580, Saturday Sept 4 at 1324, incompetent KOKB Blackwell OK once
again wasting watts with open carrier, audiblizing the formerly mysterious
Spanish sports talk I had been hearing almost every Saturday (only) for months,
mentioning deportes.

Tnx to Bruce Winkelman in Tulsa, who was able to hear it last Saturday by
nulling his local on 1570, and by his Googling, we now know it`s coming from
KHGG Fort Smith AR (city of license Van Buren):

http://www.bridgingthegapconsultinginc.com/Release.pdf

[LA ZONA DEPORTIVA logo]
For Immediate Release Contact: Leo Cruz 479-466-2211

Bridging the Gap Consulting, Inc. a marketing and advertising company
focusing in assisting businesses in reaching the ever-growing Hispanic market
is proud to announce the launch of the all-Spanish local sports
website: http://www.lazonadeportiva.com

This is dedicated to the local sporting news and events that feature
Latino athletes. La Zona Deportiva will be supported by three Spanish
radio stations that are in Northwest Arkansas, Ft Smith River Valley
and Central Arkansas. We will have highlights, latest news and a
community photo gallery featuring our young Latino youths in sports.

Coming in April every Saturday from 8am to 10am [13-15 UT], La Zona Deportiva
will launch an all-Spanish live sports talk show on the following Spanish radio
stations: La Pantera 1440 AM in central Arkansas, ESPN Deportes 1580 AM in Ft
Smith and the River Valley and Las Más Mexicana 1140 AM in Northwest Arkansas.
## Bridging The Gap Consulting, Inc.
http://www.bridgingthegapconsultinginc.com

Following their denial of such Spanish sports, previously had virtually ruled
out KGAF Gainesville TX, which is almost exactly the same distance from here as
KHGG, another prime suspect --- but never found anything about KHGG switching
to a bit of Spanish Saturday mornings only, on their own website.

1580 gets short shrift compared to the other four stations in the Fort Smith
Radio group`s website http://www.sportshog1031.com/ --- still can`t find
anything about the Spanish diversion, let alone a program schedule for 1580 in
particular.

So there are two other AR frequencies doing it too.
1140, KLTK Centerton (studio Rogers), 5 kW daytime
1440, KTUV Little Rock, 5 kW
Both of which are already full Spanish, per NRC AM Log 2010-2011.

I no longer need to chase the 1580 Spanish as unID. Since the press release
refers to 1580 as `ESPN Deportes 1580`, I wonder if there are other Spanish
hours under different sponsorship; whenever else I have heard KHGG, has still
been in English sports talk, or gospel huxter Sunday morning, not CNN Headline
News 24h as in NRC AM log.

Coördinates in FCC AM Query indicate it is definitely on the AR side of the
border, 1 kW non-direxional, but of course no longer any Tiger Maps;
Radio-locator shows it:
http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KHGGservice=AMstatus=Lhours=D
(Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, KEOR, Sperry-Catoosa-Tulsa has been on most of the time but
signal seems weaker than before, such as Sept 2 around 2030 UT; sometimes hard
to tell on caradio. But Sept 3 at 1952 check it was definitely missing, no
carrier or modulation.

1580, KOKB, Blackwell, continues to lose modulation for large amounts of
airtime, but carrier stays on. Noted that way sometime on Sept 2, but at 1950
UT on Sept 3 (over)modulated sports talk was back. Back to OC Sept 4 morning,
reaudiblizing the no longer unID Spanish sportstalk: see U S A (Glenn Hauser,
Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

anything about the Spanish diversion, let alone a program schedule for 1580 in

Coördinates in FCC AM Query indicate it is definitely on the AR side of the
border, 1 kW non-direxional, but of course no longer any Tiger Maps;
Radio-locator shows it:
http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KHGGservice=AMstatus=Lhours=D
(Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1120, KEOR, Sperry-Catoosa-Tulsa has been on most of the time but
signal seems weaker than before, such as Sept 2 around 2030 UT; sometimes hard
to tell on caradio. But Sept 3 at 1952 check it was definitely missing, no
carrier or modulation.

1580, KOKB, Blackwell, continues to lose modulation for large amounts of
airtime, but carrier stays on. Noted that way sometime on Sept 2, but at 1950
UT on Sept 3 (over)modulated sports talk was back. Back to OC Sept 4 morning,
reaudiblizing the no longer unID Spanish sportstalk: see U S A (Glenn Hauser,
Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

As a nostalgic addenda to WPRC. In recently sorting my veries from
1950-1969 I find a letter QSL from WPRC dated May 15, 1951. I believe
that reception was from their equipment tests prior to their taking the
air on a regular/permanent basis. I lived in NW Iowa at the time.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-4

2010-09-04 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

In general the Asiatic TP signals were Ultra Light this morning, and what
audio that showed up was mostly from Korea-- the good, the bad and the
ugly. 972-HLCA made its first weak appearance this season, and the 1053-Korean
Jammer was back with unusually potent signals. As usual, 1566-HLAZ was the
star of the morning. For the rest of Asia, though, it seems like another
forgettable early-season session.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider (7.5 loopstick)
inductively coupled to a 7.5' sided PVC tuned passive loop in the back yard:

594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Weak Japanese audio in and out around 1312
657 R. Pyongyang, N. Korea Male Korean tirade, 1307 (the ugly)
_http://www.mediafire.com/?jpab82b2ilixabx_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?jpab82b2ilixabx)
666 JOBK Osaka, Japan The strongest of the sleeping Japanese this
morning
747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Fair Japanese signals through KXL splatter
around 1315
972  HLCA  Dangjin, S. Korea  Strong signal but  seemingly under-modulated;
weak at 1325
1053 Korean Jammer (unknown location) Buzzing along with good strength
around 1328 (the bad)
1134 JOQR Tokyo, Japan Weaker than usual this week; threshold audio in
and out
1566 HLAZ Jeju, S. Korea Vibrant Japanese YL talk at 1329 during
religious program; out of
character for lacluster propagation (the good):
_http://www.mediafire.com/?vagefi044ni02n2_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?vagefi044ni02n2)
1575 VOA Ban Rassom, Thailand Weak Asiaitc language audio around 1302

For those ULR DXers looking for strong Asiatic signals, this would have
been a nice morning to sleep in.

73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock

Re: [IRCA] VON likely moved to 860 from 895

2010-09-04 Thread Glenn Hauser
We already had news of this in the Aug 4 issue of DX LISTENING DIGEST, 10-31.
Altho replete with SW info, DXLD also strives to cover significant developments
on MW and other bands, so I would encourage you to read it regularly. And/or
listen to my WORLD OF RADIO, where this was also reported.

73, Glenn Hauser viz.:

** SAINT KITTS NEVIS. Voice of Nevis, more popularly known as VON
Radio, after 22 years of operating on 895 AM is now on 860. Change
took effect on Saturday evening 10 July 2010. The station is known as
the ``Power House of the Eastern Caribbean``. Notice of the change was
given out on a regular basis over the last several weeks during many
popular programmes. VON Radio recently celebrated its 22nd anniversary
of broadcasting throughout the region, having been launched in June
1988 (from http://nevispages.com 12 July via Alan Pennington, MW
Report, August BDXC-UK Communication via WORLD OF RADIO 1524, DXLD 10-31)

With illustration showing 895 marked out, replaced by 860 ``We made
the change for you! since only the best will do!
http://www.vonradio.com

No, you didn`t and surely not for any other DXer in the world! 895 was
an unique frequency, free of co-channel QRM, and often could be heard
in NAm. Now it will be much tougher against all the 860 stations. What
in the world were they thinking? Yeah, I know, all those used caradios
that won`t tune split channels (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1524, DX

North Korea and China were mixing here last September; the NK is

657 KK weak

Pyongyang, NK (the best bet for buzzing-signal tirades)

666 faint music

Surely JOBK in Osaka, Japan-- an NHK1 regular this week

819 KK w/unid JJ under. Who is playing the classical?

Undoubtedly KCBS, Pyongyang, NK (strong enough to break through
semi-local splatter on 820)

837 jumble CC on top sounds like a graveyard channel!

Harbin, China reported here by John Bryant last year

846 male and female in Tagalog faded down leaving unid playing faint

50 kw DZRV on this frequency, but never heard here. Faint music possibly
from 2RN in Canberra

873 JJ

Undoubtedly JOGB, 500 kw NHK2 station in Kumamoto

891 D/U w/cw music JJ under

Both 5AN (Adelaide) and JOHK (Sendai 10 kw NHK1 station) very common
here

936 faint male sounds D/U

4PB (10 kw in Brisbane) on frequency, but never heard here

999 male in tagalog w/ off freq het causing growling.

frequency wiped out here by 1000-KOMO Seattle splatter

1134 unid JJ

Undoubtedly JOQR, a 100 kw Tokyo regular here this week

1143 unid CC

Most likely 100 kw BEL3 in Penghu, Taiwan, heard here last year and //

I recorded 790 again last night, and had better luck this time. Just before

with a mention of Caracas (relog). Better yet, at 0500 I had a weak WTSK ID
for another new catch. No idea whether they were the source of the gospel
music heard at times, but it's possible.

WTNY remains a pest here, but with CIGM out of the picture, 790 has become a
lot more interesting!

Northfield, MN (25 miles from me) tonight tied with KSTP-1500 for 4th strongest

or religious. They did give an ID at :20, then played Smoky Mountain Boogie,
then Paperback Writer (Beatles). No aurora tonight so could be widely heard.

First audio noted here this season from a TA turns out to be the UK

nice to hear some audio regardless. Other substantial hets noted on
999, 1107 (and 1107.13),1269,1305, 1377, 1413, 1422, as well as numerous

Just a barely audible carrier on 1215 here, Nigel. No sign tonight of the
maybe African TA's I've been chasing all summer.

In checking 1377, I was reminded that KRKO-1380 no longer seems to be running
IBOC; don't remember that being noted on the list

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] TP DX sept 4 audio nuggets

2010-09-04 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Derek,

Wow, great recordings-- especially on a day that neither Nick or I thought
had very good propagation. You certainly have a much better location and
antenna setup than me (not to mention a better radio).

Your 837 kHz MP3 has a dominant Mandarin Chinese station, which presumably
could be John Bryant's Harbin (from last year).

Your 846 kHz mystery station (after DZRV fades) has music very similar to
that on the Australian RN network (like I heard on 576-2RN in Oregon two
weeks ago), possibly indicating that you received 846-2RN (which I logged in
Oregon with fairly decent signals). This MP3 was from 576-2RN, with
Indian-like music on August 22: _http://www.mediafire.com/?otoewv3lvho6f4e_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?otoewv3lvho6f4e)

Your 972 kHz MP3 of HLCA is fantastic-- I had the station here this
morning, but the signal was anemic, to say the least.

Still reviewing your other MP3's sent privately, Derek-- keep up the great
work!

73, Gary
