[IRCA] Brier, WA TP's for 11/3/10

2010-11-04 Thread k7wv

Another improvement here this morning, with several Chinese and good signals
from Russia on LW and MW. Alaska coming back with KTKN in. 171 returns on LWBC,
but just above threshold audio and the other R. Rossii were somewhat weaker
than the last two mornings. Lots of hets noted just below audio threshold.
Prior to the 1435Z sample conditions were generally poor, indicating decent
dawn enhancement today.

The following times sampled this morning: 1259Z, 1335Z, 1359Z, 1435Z for 1-3
minutes each using Perseus.

The following were heard in audio:

153 R. Rossii Komsomolsk (Russia) Fair to good at 1435Z
171 R. Rossii Yakutsk (Russia) Poor at 1435Z
180 R. Rossii Yelizovo (Russia) Fair at 1259Z
189 R. Rossii Belogorsk (Russia) Good at 1435Z, best R.R. this morning
234 R. Rossii Arman (Russia) Fair at 1259Z
279 R. Rossii Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russia) Good 1435Z
531 JOQG NHK1 Morioka (Japan) //594 Fair at 1435Z
549 R. Mayak synchros (Russia) Fair at 1435Z with music
585 UNID NOT // 594, Poor to fair at 1435Z
594 JOAK NHK1 Tokyo (Japan) Good at 1435Z
603 HLSA Namyang (S Korea) Good at 1435Z
648 VOR Razdolnoye (Russia) Good with up-tempo music 1435Z
693 JOAB Tokyo (Japan) Poor at 1435Z
657 Pyongyang BS (N Korea) Fair with slow instrumental music at 1435Z
675 VOV (Vietnam) Fair with YL at 1435Z
738 BEL2 (Taiwan) presumed, poor at 1435Z
747 JOIB NHK2 Sapporo (Japan) Good at 1435Z
774 JOUB Akita NHK2 (Japan) Good in KTTH splatter at 1435Z
855 Pyongyang BS (N Korea) Poor, light music at 1435Z
930 KTKN Ketchikan, Alaska Good and on top with 1400Z TOH ID
972 HLCA Dangjin (S. Korea) Fair at 1435Z
1017 CRI (China) with KK program, man speaking fair at 1435Z
1053 UNID CC talk Fair at 1435Z
1206 Yanbian (China) Good with Yl and music at 1435Z

2010-11-04 Thread Les Rayburn
Robbie,

Thank you for the great story. You didn’t say how old you were, but I know that
at age 48, I still get a thrill from hearing distant stations on the AM band.
I’m always amazed at how many people don’t even know it’s possible to hear
stations from far away.

During Katrina, we had some evacuees staying with neighbors down the street. As
the storm moved on-shore, they were all eager for news about their
neighborhoods. I remember all of them being amazed when I explained that they
could simply tune into WWL on 870 using their car radios and hear it clear as a
bell.

After a day or two, one of them walked down the street and wanted to know why
it could only receive the signal at night. I explained it as best I could it
layman’s terms. I then invited him into the shack, and turned my AOR loop
towards New Orleans, and tuned the Drake R8B to 870. There was WWL, clear as a
bell in early afternoon. He was amazed, and sat there listening for almost
three hours.

I too think we’ve lost something along the way. Hulu is great for catching that
episode of “Hawaii 5-0” that you missed, but it will never compare to receiving
a TV station from Colorado in the middle of June.

Hey All, Just wanted to say a word about Russ`s comments about the am band. I`m
just under 40(38) and can really relate to this. I was at a friends home some
years ago one night and was tuning the bands with his sterio.(a stock portable)
His then live-in honey(she`s now gone else-ware) was amazed at what I was
hearing here in Rock springs.(wlw, kfi, and a few others) My friend was
surprised as well! My dad introduced me to amdxing when I was a teenager one
night.
I think a lot of the problem is that most young people don`t have people in the
know(like him) to show them whats out there to hear on the typical
night.(Most don`t care anyway, unfortinatly) They wouldn`t have the patience
anymore either to deal with band conds. as well as taking the time to log what
they hear.(if I can`t have it now,(and in the clear) then I`m not interested!)
I hope that I don`t have to endor the end of amdx. Then it would really be time
to hang up the headphones for good! I don`t know what I`d do if I couldn`t
chase dx on a clear, cold, wyoming winters eve! But me thinks that now I`m in
the minority. Most people don`t give a hoot much about the exclamation of I
got L.A. from wyoming! It just dosen`t have the hitting power that it did I
guess in my dads day.(or in is dads day for sure)
Too bad! People don`t know what their missing!(esp. the young) I will be
forever greatful to my dad for showing me the ways of the am band that
night(meny years ago now) on a 250 mile trip across part of wyoming! He
explaned to me what I was hearing(ksl and a few others) and WHY it was
there.(being that we were a fair distance from SLC, as well as the other
stations) I was about 16 at the time.
Good dx to all and may the may band be here for a LONG time to come! Robbie in

2010-11-04 Thread Mike Hawkins
Les/Robbie,

Here, in the land of the WORLD CHAMPION SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (can you tell
I'm happy and proud), if I mention my hobby to someone, they immediately
shrug their shoulders and say I can get that on the internet. I don't
think most younger people have the interest to listen to anything that
doesn't immediately fit their taste, doesn't have the audio quality they
want (intestine-bashing bass), or requires them to use something other than
their computer/iPod/Smart Phone to access it.

If you're older, you have more of a base in the pre-internet days. Things
learned in younger days make more of an impact than things learned later
(generally). I can remember information that young people can't figure out
how to look up. I can do math in my head that they can't find a key for on
their computer-based calculator. And the bottom line is they don't care.
We are dinosaurs, but when there's an emergency, we may/can become gods...at
least for the duration of the emergency.

Proving that I'm a dinosaur, I rode a train up to San Francisco on Tuesday.
The last time I rode a train was on the day that the Giants played a
23-inning game against the Mets.in 1964. If I remember, the Giants won
8-6. And Monday night, I was so happy that I cried. The championship
finally came to San Francisco.

A couple of thoughts - I have two sons, in their early 30's, both of whom were
in varying degrees exposed to AM DX, but it didn't take. Computers and internet
were always more interesting to them, as were pm3 players, CD's etc.

FM is alo always a very viable alternative or supplement to AM DX'ing, and I
heartily recommend it.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-4

2010-11-04 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

In a pretty remarkable comeback, what had been a thoroughly mediocre
band prior to 1420 suddenly came to life with a strong sunrise enhancement
from 1425-1450, boosting several Asian mainland stations up to their best
audio of the Fall Season.
The listening session started of at 1300 with the TP big guns at
their usual anemic level, struggling to produce much audio through the noise
and domestic splatter. Unusually, there was no mid-session propagation dive
or boost, and the same collection of Asian regulars (594, 648, 657, 738,
747, 774, 972, 1134, 1566 and 1575) were still fading in and out with
lackluster signals right up until 1420. It appeared that another mediocre
late-season session was about to wrap up.
Suddenly, 972-HLCA faded in strongly at 1430, along with a pesky
Chinese co-channel. 738-BEL2 also rose up to be heard, with audio near its
best
of the season. 639-CNR1 and 675-Vietnam soon followed, with the latter
having its strongest signal since September. Finally around 1350, the Chinese
YL speech from 936-Anhui provided that station's best signal of the season.
The Japanese NHK stations had a moderate signal boost during this period,
but it was nothing like the weird propagation surge from China.
Unfortunately it was necessary to wrap things up around 1455 when the Chinese
were
still strong, so there was no chance to check the other notable Mainland
frequencies like 756, 927, 945, 981, 1035, 1377 and 1593. Maybe one of the SDR

[IRCA] TA for 5 Nov from Victoria, BC.

2010-11-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Not much yet, but lots of weak to near imaginary carriers are being heard, plus
audio traces on 945 and 1215...

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TP for 4 Nov from Victoria, BC.

2010-11-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Gary hit the nail on the head concerning sunrise enhancement this morning,
though I don't think I can claim to hear the some of the stations that he
did...VoR-648, VoV-675, Taiwan Fisheries-738 are usually conspicuous by their
absence herebut hearing the Chinese on 1593 at 1500UT, well that was nice
after all this time, even if it was weak; actually there were quite a lot of
weak ones. But...getting up early (started listening at 1230, then back at
1330), sure didn't pay off in comparison

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

828 JOBB at 1455UT
972 HLCA, murky audio at 1430UT, and later

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK at 1432
747 JOIB at 1339 and 1440UT
1566 HLAZ 1330UT, during JJ program

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker

774 JOUB
1017 CRI woman talking //5965 at 1436UT, best on North Flag
1287 JOHR likely, but only after 1435UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

153 likely R. Rossii; only one this morning
558 at 1335UT, mx, no hope of // on 603
567 JOIK likely, never up at same time as 594
621 unID at 1433; man mumbling, at least two separate carriers, one likely off
channel; don't have measurement software running just now.
756 no // available from CNR-1, so not sure whether CNR-1 or Korea
873 JOGB //828 later on
945, didn't have any // on 4460 this morning, but around 1430UT, woman talking
seemed //6030 and 6150, so presumed CNR-1
954 mx at 1431UT JOKR?
1134 not sure who mx was.
1242 JOLF?
1593 seemed like CC talk just before 1500UT, and sure enough CC pips on the
hour, so CNR-1

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

639, 864, 1098, 1188, 1323

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] TP for 4 Nov from Victoria, BC.

2010-11-04 Thread WALTER SALMANIW
Unfortunately, I wasn't listening after 14:00, but I did record several
mornings for 5 minutes around 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00.  Overall, pretty dismal
with very little to hear.  On the 3rd and 4th, I did hear 594, 621, 639, and
774.  On the 2nd, I heard the same, plus 657, 180, 189, and 279.  All at 7
level at best, and mostly at 6.  Not much to write home about.  That's for
sure!  ..Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC.
