[IRCA] Oklahoma TP's 11/11/10

702 unID, 0919, het (QRM:WLW 700); not audible at 1200; 1220 weak het, still
audible at 1312.
747 JOIB Sapporo J, 0912, man woman talking //774, poor; 1202, Basic
English program with severe WSB 750 slop; not audible after 1205.
774 JOUB Akita J, 0901, man woman talking, poor; 1159 man talking followed
by 2100 JST, not audible afterward.
1134 unID, 1305, trace of het.

A big letdown after the past two mornings.

[IRCA] Arizona TP's for 11-11-10

2010-11-11 Thread Bill Block

As Richard said TP conditions was way down from yesterday. Only a few carriers
on the bottom part of the band with no carriers above 828. The only audio was
from JOAK-594, JOAB-693 and JOUB-774.

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 11 Nov 2010

2010-11-11 Thread Nigel Pimblett
The Alberta TP report this morning is no more inspiring than those from
OK or AZ. A big drop since yesterday, no doubt related to the renewed
auroral activity. My audio list is precisely the same as Bill's, 594
JOAK, 693 JOAB, and 774 JOUB, with 594 being the strongest of the three.

[IRCA] CKVH-1020-High Prairie, AB

2010-11-11 Thread Mike Stonebridge
It would appear that this station has pulled their AM plug even though it's
only been a month since the new FM officially signed on. No sign of it
yesterday or again this morning. My home here is only 50 miles from High
Prairie and there wasn't even a trace of a carrier on the Perseus waterfall.

However I'm not complaining! It's demise enabled me to log my first new 1020
station in many years. Yesterday evening I logged KJJK Fergus Falls, MN with a
full ID @ 17:00MST. A surprisingly good signal for the 370 watts it should have
been on at that time.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-11

2010-11-11 Thread D1028Gary

Hello All,

The late-season doldrums seem to return with a vengeance here this
morning as Asian signals dropped off significantly, in comparison to the past
few days. Matching the results of Richard, Bill and Nigel, the big guns
were the only TP survivors here this morning, as the second-tier Asians
never seemed to get out of the noise. The back yard was frozen, and the TP-DX
was about the same.
Several Japanese big guns managed decent audio along with some
Asian powerhouses, but the results were far from exciting, and the high band
was particularly anemic. 972-HLCA had a nice fade-in around the 1500 TOH, but
there were only 3 + 1 pips at the TOH, with no sign of the mystery
English-speaking co-channel. About the only signal of note was a fair
appearance
of 936-Anhui during this miserable morning, providing more evidence that
this overachieving Chinese station is now probably deserving of official big
gun TP status.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5
loopstick), inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the
frozen
back yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) was used as an SSB
spotting receiver:

594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Fair-good Japanese talk program 1455
648 VORRazdolnoye, Russia Fair Korean during language
lessons at 1512, but CISL splatter was mortal enemy
657 Pyongyang BS, N. Korea Music barely audible in noise 1505

[IRCA] Dave Niehaus was why Marconi invented radio

2010-11-11 Thread Guy Atkins
The most beloved broadcaster in the Pacific Northwest USA died yesterday,
Dave Niehaus-- the Seattle Mariners announcer since the baseball team's
beginning in 1977. Stories and remembrances are popping up online
everywhere, but I found this excerpt from Jim Caple of ESPN.com one of the
best:

...I could go on and on about what made Niehaus great, but Mariners fans
already know that. Simply put, Dave Niehaus was why Marconi invented radio.

Radio has become more and more unlistenable in the past two decades,
increasingly filled with phony, needlessly angry people shouting and
pretending to be outraged about trivial matters they really don't care
about. But Niehaus was a wonderful oasis among all that. Tune the dial to
the Mariners broadcast and it was like listening to a kindly father or
grandfather tell us a story (in fact, the Mariners once had him record a CD
of bedtime stories). He could be soothing, funny, suspenseful, dramatic,
joyous and outrageously over the top -- often in the same inning. *BREAK OUT
THE RYE BREAD, GRANDMA, IT'S GRAND SALAMI TIME!!!* But he was always
compelling to listen to.

Jim's full story is at:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=caple_jimid=5790342

As a DXer and tinkerer with radios, it is all to easy for me to forget that
it is truly PEOPLE who bring out the magic of radio. Who among us doesn't
remember as a child, listening to a pocket portable under the covers at
night, tuning in the beguiling voice of a radio announcer? It might have
been sports, news, drama, whatever...but the ability of a masterful
broadcaster has the power to spark our imagination and give life to the
magic of radio.

Dave Niehaus was one of those rare radio personalities whom many, many
thousands never personally met, but feel like they have. Dave's longevity
and popularity in Seattle's sports and broadcasting scene transcends even
the best of the icons and top players the team has had. Ichiro, Randy
Johnson, Edgar Martinez, Ken Griffey Jr., Jay Buhner... their
accomplishments are many, but it was Dave Niehaus who brought them to life
over the airwaves.

At best, I'm only a fair-weather fan of baseball and the Seattle Mariners.
Dave Niehaus was the reason I found myself tuning into Mariner broadcasts
frequently since my 1980 move to Seattle. Even in the midst of regrettable,
miserable Mariners losses and seasons, Dave never faltered. He never failed
to spark our imaginations with his skill in front of the microphone.

More about his place in Seattle broadcasting over the last 33 years,
including clips of some of his memorable and exciting moments can be read
and listened to at:

[IRCA] MW DX from Enid OK, November 10-11, 2010

2010-11-11 Thread Glenn Hauser
All times and dates strictly UT. MW log editors are welcome to excerpt items,
reformat and change to favorite timezone if necessary. Rx: mostly DX-398 with
internal antenna only; some caradio as specified; above 2 MHz on FRG-7 with
110-foot east-west longwire.

** ALASKA. 2750, presumed HAARP: Walt Salmaniw in Victoria, BC: ``Glenn, thanks
for the 2750 tip. I'm listening to it right now at 0416 UT [Nov 10]. Very
unusual for sure. About every 6 seconds there is a signal that emanates from
the carrier and extends out 10 kHz on each side with a rising pitch. On the
Perseus waterfall, it looks like an arrowhead. The signal then repeats itself.
The carrier never changes, bang on 2750 kHz``.

That`s exactly one of several formats I was hearing the night before around
0700. So I make another quick check on the portable at 0429 Nov 10, and there
is a carrier, then off. No time to follow up until 0645, when it was not to be
heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. 660, funny song about a tiburón, Nov 11 at 1245, then live local DJ
at 1246 with TC as 13 para las 6, ``en La Tremenda . . . Delicias``, then TC
for 12 para las 6, and then refined to 12 y media para las 6. Show is ``Buenos
Días con Miguel Navarro``. So it`s XEACB in Ciudad Delicias, Chihuahua,
observing MST of UT -7, so pre-Oct 31 on UT -6 it should have been denoted MDT
and not CST.

1000, Nov 11 at 1230, ranchera music in KTOK OKC null. Fits for XEFV, La
Rancherita, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, so presumed.

1180, Nov 11 at 1253, harmonious ballad duet by YLs with piano, then added
chorus; only ID caught was ``11-80``, and into romantic music by Gardel-like
crooner; 1258 losing out to KOIL Omaha Bill Bennett promo. In all probability
XEDCH, Ciudad Delicias, Chihuahua, which is ``Romántica 11-80`` per WRTH, and
was getting same town a bit earlier on 660, today`s pipeline terminus. Then at
1302 after not so long Mex NA, heard Delicias, Chihua2 and romántico mentioned
to clinch it, but not really a sign-on (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 1250, Nov 10 at 1305 UT, ``La Súper Equis, una emisora de Ramírez
Spanish Radio``. Here`s an article about it, confirming that identity for KYYS
Kansas City KS; where do they get the X? No X in the callsign:
http://www.hispanicmarketweekly.com/featureArticle.cms?id=2164
It`s the successor to the late lamented WREN 1250 Topeka. Of course it`s not
unusual here, sometimes JBA in the daytime (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP MW carrier search Nov 10, DX-398 in USB mode from 1310 UT:
747, 828, 945, 972, 1035, 1053, 1134, and at 1316, 1566. The last seems almost
strong enough for some audio from FEBC S Korea, but not (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. TP MW carrier search Nov 11 at 1218, on the DX-398 in USB mode, 9
kHz steps: 594, 693, 747, 774 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ###

[IRCA] TP for 11 Nov from Victoria, BC.

2010-11-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Difficult to get too enthusiastic about things this morning after the
excitement of the last few mornings. Things seemed pretty dully before 1500UT,
and there was a slight, quite slight, lift afterwards.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

774 JOUB, not until 1509UT

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ , also after 1500UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker
747 JOIB at 1511UT
828 JOBB
945 CNR1 presumed w/woman in CC at 1517UT
972 HLCA at 1517
1287 JOHR at 1516UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

558 HLQH at 1510UT seemed //with a near imaginary HLSA-603
594 JOAK
1017 seemed //828, so NHK2 rather than usual CRI
1422 JJ inflected talk at 1514UT, so JORF?

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

936...presumed Anhui doesn't seem to have the modulation to match its carrier
strength...

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] local sunset TP

2010-11-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
774 delivering weak audio at times 0650UTsounding like language lessons;
747 just joined the fray, and had traces of audio on 1287 a few minutes ago.
Obviously the geomagnetic upset hasn't shut things down entirely.

best wishes,

Nick
