Here in my apartment with horrible electrical noise, dx has been almost
nonexistent this season. How I have several questions regarding the x-band
stations. What are the most recent u.s. stations to come on the air?
Whatever happened to the proposed stations in Farmington NM, and
Harrisonburg Va? Also, whatever happened to the Tijuana station on 1630?

Thanks,

Re: [IRCA] The expanded band turns 15

2010-11-14 Thread Mike Hawkins
I logged KUSA/1660 on March 28, 1995. They were doing some form of
experimental broadcasting with/for/at a NAB show in Las Vegas, and were on
the air for some period of time. They're long gone now.

15 years ago tonight, at 8:20pm EST, Niel Wolfish in Toronto heard a test

Central time zones had been noting tone and music testing since October 10,
but this was the first report of a voice ID. Regular sked would begin on
December 8. I heard them for the first time on December 14.

I enjoyed making several long-haul catches from Out West the first few
years of the expanded band, before the frequencies filled up. Western DXers
were hearing states such as New Jersey and Florida, some for the first time.

All in all, though, the dreams many of us had for the X-band failed to
materialize. Based on what I'd read about band conditions in past decades,
I was halfway anticipating that if there were, say, three stations on a
frequency, each with 1kw, they'd be constantly fading in and out with each
other, the far ones mixing with the near. No real dominant, just like a
remarkably uncluttered graveyard channel. In reality, the one or two
nearest stations are LC, and the ones on the other side of the continent
are never heard. At least, that's the way it's been for me!

[IRCA] Interesting Saturday evening DX wise

2010-11-14 Thread Allen Willie
Hello To All,

An interesting Saturday evening  to say the least, with the likes of certain
stations audible throughout the early evening which are normally early morning
visitors, one could feel “something in or rather on the air” was about to
occur.

First sign of this was WYLL in Chicago and also CKPC in Brantford,Ontario in
for
most of the listening event, normally as mentioned, early morning arrivals.

Things heated up DX wise when it was discovered KWKH in Shreveport,Louisiana
was
audible and even at times dominating over the well heard WBBR.

Also in the mix of what could be deemed a rare DX gathering here in the North
Atlantic, was the logging of WHBY 1150 in Kimberley,Wisconsin, not often heard
here.

The peak of the evening was hearing KNX in Los Angeles on 1070 once again with
decent audio all by itself for the most part. It too has only been logged by
yours truly at this location a few times.

Hi Richard,

Asians were a little better here, but not by much. The big guns on 594,
648, 657, 747, 828, 972 and 1134 had fair-to-good audio, but most of the
second-tier TP's were missing in action.

657-Pyongyang again had its high-frequency audio missing (maybe that's
not such a bad thing?), and its OM and YL Tirade Team again showed up for
648-VOR's Korean program after 1500 (that's really a bad thing).

2010-11-14 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Others seem to have fared better than me this morning. Here in
Alberta it was one of those are my antennas connected type of

Japan on 774. That, along with weak audio from Australia on 891 summed
up today's TP action.

Re: [IRCA] The expanded band turns 15

2010-11-14 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
My expanded band story points out how capable the MW band can be, if
only there wasn't any interference between us and the target station...

1620 was a clear channel prior to expanded band assignments, and
there was a period where a station from Argentina was creeping
through, even in Victoria. Others had ID'd it, but I hadn't, just a
weak SS talker for me, but I kept trying. Then Atmore, AL signed
on, and it was relatively huge here (though perhaps not as huge as
Seattle is now), and that sent my hopes for an Argentinian ID down
the tubes! Even when it faded down, it just destroyed the channel
for real DX. Now of course, Alabama would be real DX on 1620
(especially as it isn't there anymore, hi)

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-14

2010-11-14 Thread D1028Gary

Hello All,

Asian TP signals dropped off significantly here this morning
(compared to yesterday), in agreement with the lackluster results reported by
Richard and Nigel. Here on the west coast a few big gun TP's managed fair to
good audio, however, as it was survival of the fittest in a typically
mediocre late-season session.
 Big gun signals on 594, 648, 657, 747, 774, 828, 972 and 1134 were
up and down in strength from 1400-1515, but sunrise enhancement didn't
really enhance anything. The second-tier TP's tended to stay down in the
noise, and Asian propagation wrapped up early around 1515 this morning.
657-Pyongyang's infamous transmitter continues to muffle the high audio
frequencies, thankfully silencing most of the loud Korean tirades and
1948-vintage
music. Unfortunately the same noxious NK programming has now shown up on
648-VOR's Korean program (after 1500) for two days in a row, providing DXers
the dubious chance to hear the rude shouting and obsolete music in rare high
fidelity.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5
loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC-frame tuned passive loop (in
the
rainy back yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) was used as an SSB
spotting receiver:

[IRCA] Newfoundland Ultralight Trans-Atlantics Report Nov 12-13 Summary

2010-11-14 Thread Allen Willie
Hello Everyone,

Due to the windy and colder conditions today I was unable to complete all 3 DX
sessions over the weekend as planned up at Ladie's Lookout near Signal Hill,
Newfoundland. However, Friday and Saturday evening offered better weather
conditions and 2 sessions were completed with the logs listed below.

Stations from Spain dominated the two day affair and 2 new stations were added
to the Ultralight Log

Saturday's monitoring at 20:20 UT discovered a signal on 1521 khz under the
Saudi station with a woman in Russian language. Not sure if this is Urumqi in
China as no other details and the time seems a bit late for it.
Also an unidentified on 1296 khz at 19:52 UT with Drumbeat music and vocals,
possibly Sudan, any ideas ?

Re: [IRCA] The expanded band turns 15

2010-11-14 Thread Dave Marthouse
Another interesting factoid about the xband is a short-lived
station called k-truck. This was a station that was operated by the US
military somewhere in Maryland. K-truck was a test of a transmitter that
was built by the government to conduct psychological warfare in Bosnia.
Before it was shipped over there they wanted to test it and as a result a
group of volunteers operated it for a few weeks. The programming consisted
of rock music with announcements. They solicited input from dxers and
others interested in providing signal and quality reception reports. I
heard it frequently when I lived in Metuchen New Jersey. I don't remember
how much power they ran but it was widely heard by dxers around the country
and farther a-field.

[IRCA] WGR-550

2010-11-14 Thread Craig Healy
WGR-550 has been quite dominant in the Providence area recently. There have
also been reports of it being heard in other places where it is not common.
Can anyone in the upstate NY area or to the west check to see if there is
actually a pattern change? I've noticed no signal drop any time at all
after local sunset here. I've checked right through the entire evening and
see no difference. Their night pattern is essentially a figure-8 which
would drop signal level toward me.

I suppose it could be some propagation quirk, but no other Buffalo area
station is higher than normal. 900 in Hamilton, ON seems about the same as
usual. 930 in Buffalo isn't a killer either.

I'm usually pretty deep in WGR's eastern night null here, but it sounds
awfully strong tonight. I'll check with their CE tomorrow to see if
something's amiss...

[IRCA] FS: Radio books

2010-11-14 Thread Scott Fybush
Cleaning out the shack before winter, and I've culled out some duplicate
books for sale:

I have a couple of copies of the latest edition (2010-2011) Radio
Book. This is the descendant of the old M Street Radio Directory, a
fat 800-page volume listing all the radio stations in the US and (most
of) Canada, complete with verified contact information including the
names of chief engineers and program directors. $104 with postage from
the publisher...I'm selling my copies for $80 postpaid.

I also have one copy each of the 2007-08 and 2008-09 editions of the
Radio Book. These are $20 and $25 postpaid, respectively.

And I have one copy of the 19th edition of the FM Atlas - that's two
editions ago, if I'm not mistaken. $5 postpaid and it's yours.

Contact me offlist if you're interested...sc...@fybush.com.

(What's that you say? Why yes, I do have the new 2011 Tower Site
Calendars, too... :)

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] The expanded band turns 15

2010-11-14 Thread Patrick Martin
All in all, though, the dreams many of us had for the X-band failed to
materialize.  Based on what I'd read about band conditions in past
decades, I was halfway anticipating that if there were, say, three
stations on a frequency, each with 1kw, they'd be constantly fading in
and out with each other, the far ones mixing with the near. No real
dominant, just like a remarkably uncluttered graveyard channel.
In reality, the one or two nearest stations are LC, and the ones on
the other side of the continent are never heard.  At least, that's
the way it's been for me

Some X Banders do well with skip if there is not a huge dominant station
on the channel. Good ones here 1610, 1630, 1690, and 1700, but ones like
1640 or 1660 are tough as the stations are too strong and dominant, plus
there are too many stations on the channel. It would have been nice with
only 3 on each frequency, but in reality several frequencies because
GYers here.
