[IRCA] 20 second tone on 1480 and RR music under 1510 WLAC

2010-12-09 Thread Tom Jasinski
At 02:04 CST somebody on 1480 Khz is running a continuous loop with a 20
second steady tone. This is repeated about every 43 seconds.

Loop bearing approx SE/NW from here. Anyone have any ideas on who this may
be. Signal is weak and fady so it is not close.

on 1510khz a station playing RR music selections was in poo/fair for a few
minutes from 01:55 to 02:05am CST in WLAC null. This unid went through TOH
without any ID or spots.

Re: [IRCA] more on 1710 pirate

I don't think it'd be in the Boston area, those are mostly ethnic pirates
and i think there already is an ethnic pirate in that area on 1710.

I am going to try for this one on the car radio tomorrow evening here in
Southern Illinois.

Shucks...if you could've been able to pick out the male voice and even bits

But unless someone else heard exactly what you did and can pinpoint the

2010-12-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I'm getting my templates mixed up...this is the real 8 December, the last one
submitted was actually 7 December, if anyone is keeping count, hi.
Actually, on 8 December I needed to go to work early, so listening was at 1320
and 1400UT, and actually, conditions weren't bad...not too exciting, but not
the recent disgusting...

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK (lowish level, but clear on this open channel)
774 JOUB

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

747 JOIB
828 JOBB

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker

1287 JOHR at 1400

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

567 JOIK
639 CNR-1 //6030 at 1401UT
954 JOKR w/JJ inflected talk
972 likely HLCA
1566 HLAZ

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

855 off channel, 1053, 1116, 1251, 1323, 1575

best wishes,
Nick

Re: [IRCA] Bert's Sangean DT400W

2010-12-09 Thread sa...@sounddsl.com
Hi Bert:

The DT400W is a nice Ultralight size receiver. It
is quite sensitive for its size and has good audio -
the one aspect that DXers have reported is that the
filtering is somewhat broad, leading some to change
out the filter. Depending on what you want to use it
for, it should be a great take-along radio.

Re: [IRCA] more on 1710 pirate

2010-12-09 Thread Les Rayburn
I suggest that someone search the forums on sites like “Radio Daddy”
(www.radiodaddy.com). The station ID’s and the fake commercials are pretty
slick in terms of production value and voice quality. My guess is that someone
had them produced on a free voice over site such as this one, which is the most
popular by far. Finding the request for the production might provide you with a
clue to the owner of the station, or at least give you the ability request a
QSL from them by sending a private message on the forum.

I’m lacking “serious antennas” for AM DXing here at the moment, though I hope
to change that soon. Really would love to log this one!

I got an email today from Michigan DXer Tim Tromp, who has heard the same
1710 pirate station I've been hearing the past couple of nights. He heard it
back in November and posted some audio clips at his blog at
http://midx.wordpress.com/2010/11/06/am-1710-the-big-q-oldies-heard-well-this-morning/
One of them is the same GE Superadio commercial that I heard last night.
He mentions Rob Ross in Ontario also heard this pirate in September.
Tim's audio clips are much better reception than I've heard--it would appear
this pirate is indeed located farther east.

So-o-o-o... it's my Birthday today and (Oh...don't worry about
passing along any Birthday greetings) I open up the present from my
Wife, and it turns out to be a SANGEAN DT-400W that she got from the
folks over at AMAZON.COM. She said it was in her cart, but she didn't
put it there. Neither did I. I don't know a lot about this radio, but
she said she could easily send it back if I don't want it. I haven't
opened it up yet and I wanted some input before I do. Is it worth
keeping? I know that's open for debate, but I thought I would just throw
the question out there just like that. Should I have her send it back
for something similar? I already have a G8. Do I need something from
TECSUN or the like? I have no idea what she paid for it, so if there are
any suggestions to be had, please keep it in a similar price range.
Thanks for all of your help. I will now go back to enjoying what's
left of my 46th Birthday. Perhaps I'll take in Top Chef a little later
on BRAVO...

Re: [IRCA] 20 second tone on 1480 and RR music under 1510 WLAC

2010-12-09 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Tom - I am 99.99% sure that I have been hearing WLRB Macomb, IL on late
for the past 3 weeks. It has been widely noted that their talk format
ends at 7 PM and they revert to their previous format, whether sunset is
before or after that. They keep the old format going to keep the
automation functioning, 24/7. AND if the station does not properly sign
off at sundown, the old format would of course be sent over the air
without ads, newscast and such.

I am reasonably sure that I heard a female singing the calls (WLRB) at
:27 and :57 and a male announcing them at other times (AM 15-10 WLRB).

As far as the standards format goes - many standards format outlets
have taken ten (twenty?) years off their playlists. Instead of playing
music from the 40's and 50's, they are playing light pop / oldies from
the 1960's and 70's. When I first started hearing what I presume to be
WLRB, I originally thought that it was rock too but the more I paid
attention, the more I noted that the music is more old, light pop, which
fits today's standards format.

Paul have you heard anything from WLRB's PD? Once again the key
question is if WLRB's automation for the music format inserts singing
calls at appx 27 and 57 past the hour.

Rick Dau (NE) heard WLRB behaving this way in September.

Ben Root from KMSD assured me that it is not them.

You can reasonably suspect this is WLRB unless I say otherwise. The
Engineer agrees the songs played would match WLRB.

Do not, however, count this as definate, until I confirm otherwise.

They are having some more pressing issues today over there, so my buddy whos
the Chief Engineer hasn't had time to attend to my questions.. they're
having a computer problem with one of their FMs and one of their on air

one my buddy was going to ask about WLRB, as the station is his
responsibility as well as his other duties.)

So-o-o-o... it's my Birthday today and (Oh...don't worry about
passing along any Birthday greetings) I open up the present from my
Wife, and it turns out to be a SANGEAN DT-400W that she got from the
folks over at AMAZON.COM http://amazon.com/. She said it was in her
 cart, but she didn't
put it there.
Perhaps I'll take in Top Chef a little later
 on BRAVO...

[IRCA] 1210, 1330, 1500 Khz at 0100 PST------------540 at 12 noon PST

2010-12-09 Thread bill kral
Early Wed AM at 0100 PST Tuning into good DX and found station playing oldies
on 1210 with good signal peaks over others so checked log and found CFYM
Kindersley Sk.Liked the music and listened for a few minutes but no ID and into
another song so I scanned up and found the same music on 1330 but slightly out
of sync by a lag of a few seconds.Look ed at log again and found CJYM Rosetown
Sk. 1210 peaked out stronger with 250 watts than 1330 did with 10KW. Both
stations were simulcasting but ID was independent while log quotes a commom ID
for both. Last night at same time only 1330 was audible. 1210 was a mix with SS
from Seattle on
top
Early Wed.After 0100 on 1500 an ESPN Program was out with a better than normal
signal as 1500 is usually graveyard sounding.Could not locate such a format in
the log so
maybe a recent switch from something else to sports.Last night and early this
morning no sign of this one and 1500 was level again with distant
mix.    Also I'm still
catching an all day listenable signal from CBC Radio One on 540 in SK.

In the list of stations in this ultralight scan from Signal Hill I noticed that
on 747 and 1008 the Canary Islands were on top while on 675 Holland was
audible. Since Holland also occupies 747 and 1008 they are not or rarely
hopping over the pond. The Dutch 747 and 1008 run on more power than 675 so if
Canary did not occupy those slots then Holland would probably be there all the
time. The question is --why did two Canary stations choose to operate on the
same frequencies as two Dutch Stations. I would bet that the two Dutch guys
were on the air before the two Canary ones. Bill in BC

2010-12-09 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Yes, it is WLRB. I didn't want to say for sure till we were able to confirm
it.

What happens is, WLRB programs news/talk during the normal day light hours,
say 6am to 6pm but since daylight happens earlier and ends later some
months, what WLRB does is revert to a locally automated mix of
standards/oldies until sign off time.

WLRB's remote control which tells the transmitter when to go on and off has
had, apparently, some issues.. it dun be getting stupid I recon.. ie:
forgetting the time.

If anyone wants a QSL, even an E-QSL, I'll put you in touch with WLRB's
engineer.

I think you should keep the radio, buy your special lady flowers, and cook
 dinner for her.

 Subject: [IRCA] SANGEAN DT-400W

So-o-o-o... it's my Birthday today and (Oh...don't worry about passing
along any Birthday greetings) I open up the present from my Wife, and it
turns out to be a SANGEAN DT-400W that she got from the folks over at
AMAZON.COM. She said it was in her cart, but she didn't put it there.
Neither did I. I don't know a lot about this radio, but she said she could
easily send it back if I don't want it. I haven't opened it up yet and I
wanted some input before I do. Is it worth keeping? I know that's open for
debate, but I thought I would just throw the question out there just like
that. Should I have her send it back for something similar? I already have
a G8. Do I need something from TECSUN or the like? I have no idea what she
paid for it, so if there are any suggestions to be had, please keep it in
  a similar price range.
Thanks for all of your help. I will now go back to enjoying what's
left of my 46th Birthday. Perhaps I'll take in Top Chef a little later on
  BRAVO...

Kevin,
Thanks for the reply. I'll run downstairs in just a moment and give it a
listen. I hope for good things, even if it is the day after my Birthday.

Yes Bert...I would Keep the DT-400...it's a Nice little Radio with Great
Sensitivity and Beautiful Audio. It's a little wide on selectivity...but
still a Nice DX Radio. I have one and really like it!! I have 25 ULRs
and another on the way. I would say the DT-400 is in the top 5 of my
Favourites, with the Sony SRF-T615 being my absolute Favourite!!

Have some Fun with it you'll hear some nice DX on it!!

[IRCA] WLRB 1510 CONFIRMED!

2010-12-09 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Thanks to Paul Walker, KAZ, Curtis Sadowski, Rick Dau and John Rieger
(and Tom Jasinski's message today about an unID on 1510), I have been
finally able to confirm that I have been hearing WLRB, Macomb, IL many
nights, under WLAC.

Paul put me in contact with Gary at WLRB and he emailed me a
verification in less than 30 minutes!

Gary noted that power failures at the station have thrown the remote
control's date / time memory out of whack and the station did not
properly sign off. Gary is monitoring the station twice a day until a
new backup arrives, next week. I know that Gary has his hands full but
Paul said that he will put you in contact with Gary if you want an
e-QSL.

Hats of to Gary and Paul!

Re: [IRCA] Another Kchibo - This one is a DSP radio - KK-D6110

2010-12-09 Thread George Sherman
The 2,500 uV/m MW sensitivity would be considered poor by most DXers. The
Tecsun PL-310 from anon-co is the same price. Sensitivity still isn't great,
but better at 1,000 uV/m. Many use a loop with it to get TA/TP reception. You
can get a discount on shipping if loop ordered at same time. 5 DSP
selectivities. The radio is labeled in English, I got English manual by e-mail.
Anon-co checks the radios prior to mailing to be sure factory QC didn't
overlook anything. 73, George S., MN

Kchibo KK-D6110 DSP radio $49.99 shipped from HK. Item # 250636155238
http://tinyurl.com/264pbrw

This one looks pretty cool but could not make out from the description
how the worked, how many filter sizes and so on (due to bad Translation
(and I mean BAD translation)).

Translation oddities:

*KK-D6110 is a powerful, full-band appearance of prudent generosity DSP
radio

*Digital filter design, with high selectivity and anti-mirror radio
interference

*AM / FM deposit Taiwan clearance

*Special software used by the U.S. radio digital signal processing chip,
performance is more good, then Income is stable and reliable

Unfortunately, I do not know Chinese but in trade for a radio, I would
help them with writing copy. :)

Dave in Indy

[IRCA] KAAY-1090

2010-12-09 Thread Barry McLarnon
KAAY is thundering in here tonight at 2345 EST with Christian music (despite
horrid IBOC noise from both 1080 and 1100). Don't think I've heard them
after their sunset before... gotta be on day pattern.
