Who's ever on 1215 measures at 1214.995 here at 06:38 UTC. Too weak for
audio. Another interesting Tropical bander is just under 5055. Using
various remote Perseus SDRs, I'm seeing it in Florida, Michigan, and a
couple places on the west coast, including my own. ? Vanuatu?Walt

I’m hearing a fair to moderate oldies or nostalgia formatted station underneath
KMOX 1120 tonight, even without the phaser. The station has been playing mostly
1950’s tunes for the past half hour. No ID catch at TOH. Radio Locator dot com
doesn’t list any stations with either oldies or nostalgia format.

Any ideas on this one, true believers? BTW, you were all correct about WRZN,
Tallahassee, Florida being the station I heard under 720 WGN. Hearing them
again tonight well too. That 250 watts really gets out in this direction.

[IRCA] Status of WVZN 1580 (was Robert Ross DX)

2011-01-31 Thread Saul DX
Is or was WVZN silent recently? DX from where I am was unusually strong to
NYC-NJ around sunset tonight. Perhaps strongest noted in recent years. Might
be worth a call to WLIM and WDAB...

Later this eve heard 1140 Sydney NS about = WRVA. Tried some Newfoundland
channels. Had country on 740 aimed that way, briefly. No sign of CBC on 540,
640, 750. 990 CBC was strong, most surely MB, with Montreal behind it.

WLIM is Spanish Religion with the slogan Radio Adonai. WDAB is also Spanish
Religious with neither a slogan nor website available. WVZN-PA is Spanish
Contemporary Christian so although they could be on PSSA at the time of the

Russ..thanks for the info on the 1580 SS Station!! Looks like this one
will take more Monitoring to figure out for sure!! I'll keep checking at
Sunset and see if they are back in later in the week..BOTH WLIM and
WDAB would be New for the ULR LOGbut are RELOGS for the OVERALL
LOG. I could sure use them for a New One on ULR!!

WLIM is Spanish Religion with the slogan Radio Adonai. WDAB is also Spanish
Religious with neither a slogan nor website available. WVZN-PA is Spanish
Contemporary Christian so although they could be on PSSA at the time of the
logging, your details don't fit that format. They are licensed for 5 w at night.

I'd bet on WDAB.

Re: [IRCA] Run Don't Walk

2011-01-31 Thread Saul DX

I'd say...

From Burnt River ON sunset skip started when I had a late luch at 2:30, with
Maine and the rest of New England blasting in. 1280 Gardiner ME and 1230 CT
(the Spanish station there) both new, some nice relogs.

Veered to the sw and I netted Oakland NJ, on my target list for awhile, and
some relogs from NJ area I don't hear often. WOKV 690 FL popped in, and then
it was strong to the nw, with MN WI MI and MB. Nothing new up that way but
one of best sigs ever to 730 Dauphin MB, and KTOE 1420 Mankato MN. 1100
Dilworth mixing evenly early on with WTAM 1100.

Evening seems slow but now that I've read the e-mail from the NS DXer
(below) I'll check eastwards and see if I can nab Nova Scotia and the
Maritimes. I did a TA scan and neted good sigs out of Algeriaon 531, 549,
and some other stuff, mkostly good hets. Too bad I have to leave tomorrow (I
was going to go home on Wednesday morning but want to beat the coming
snowstorm).

I relaid a wire on the ice almost due west. It's about 400 feet and it
rocks. Non-directional, just sitting on the ice. I did that on foot but
after seeing an open spot on otherwise thick enough ice I went out on skis
today to spread my weight a bit a, when I checked it (for damage from
snowmobiles). It's generally only a problem on weekends. If any of you do
use ice on lakes this way, play it safe. Go on skis, test the ice for
thickness every so often, and take something that you can use to grab into
the ice to pull yourself out; and if you do fall in flutter-kick like a seal
to help get out.

Go to your radios tonight! In Halifax now, radius of strong stations at 6
pm local (5 pm EST) is including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal to the west,
Cleveland to SW, Baltimore to south. All are high power stations but they
are stable and clear even at this early hour. SFI has been steadily
trending up. This could be an interesting night...

Rick,

Congratulations! That’s a very nice catch indeed. I quickly shifted to 720 KHz
after getting your message, and did find the channel “open” which is rare here.
I’m hearing oldies format music underneath WGN, very well tonight.

Any idea who has the oldies format on 720? Anybody?

[IRCA] Sangean ATS 404

2011-01-31 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
I visited our local Fry's Electronics, Friday night and wound up in the
row with portable radios. They had about 20 on display but I did not
recall see any in the locked case, below. I noticed an orange / salmon
colored clearance tag for the normally $89.95 Sangean ATS-404 - it was
$2.90! :O Of course it was a misprint, right? I said to a salesman,
"I want to buy this" and he said "okay" followed by "you know that this
is a display model and it's been here for a while?" I said that I
understood. He grabbed it and the AC adaptor and bubble wrapped it and
I went on to do the rest of my shopping! That is a deal of a lifetime!
A 97% discount! Too bad the $280 Grundig 750 wasn't $10! :) I will
check back as they may be reducing their inventory.

For you ULR DX'ers - is this radio is too big to be considered an
Ultralight? It does not seem to have as good as selectivity or
sensitivity as my Eton e-100 but it's still nice! Any online manual
resources?

Thanks and 73,

[IRCA] Sigs huge to New England from ON

2011-01-31 Thread Saul DX
Getting 1280 Gardiner ME for a new catch. Took late lunch at 3:00 and checked
the radio...was hot to ME on 1390. Brattleboro VT 1450, and more from the
region...I'm quitting early today...this is as good as I've seen it that way
this year. Been after the 1280 for long time.

It's KPNP in Shakopee, MN, about 7 miles from my QTH, daytime power of

While in my car tonight around sunset, I noticed a strong station
broadcasting in Chinese on 1600 Khz. I assume this was East Coast, since it
faded into the mix after darkness was complete. But I don?t recall logging
it in the past. Any ideas?

(See?this would be a great station to consult 1watts.com regarding! I
miss that site)

Re: [IRCA] TP for 31Jan2011 from Victoria: sad

2011-01-31 Thread Colin Newell
Back in Victoria and I seem to have brought
Kona's sort of lackluster conditions with me.

My Sony 7600G, which had a display issue while on the Big Island,
completely cured itself after I left the batteries out for
an hour. I suppose I could have done that while there.
Seems in an LCD display that a crystal alignment or mechanical
thing can develop throwing the matrix out of alignment - all is
well now.

situation as above. Many relogs from MN IA WI MI.

Could it be WRZN Hernando, FL? Theyre listed as Nostalgia and I believe
carry a satelitte music service, bu Standards/Nostalgia stations are
slipping in more pop and some more 60s and 70s tunes along with their 40s

720 Khz is more “open” tonight than normal. Even without the phaser, I can
clearly hear an oldies station under WGN. Well enough to log song titles
and times, but of course, WGN “cranks it up” during TOH and BOH breaks, so
I haven’t been able to catch an ID.

Any idea who the oldies format station on 720Khz might be? THANKS IN
ADVANCE!
