[IRCA] FW: [DX-tip] Hets on high side of 1520 and low side of 1540

2011-02-28 Thread Robert Young

Yes I'm getting them in MA at about 1522.5 Khz and 1537.5 Khz, I'm not hearing
a het though but I'm able to zero beat on a carrier wave on those two
frequencies with my BFO

Subject: [DX-tip] Hets on high side of 1520 and low side of 1540

There are hets on high side of 1520, started at 1khz, now at
2.5khz high. There is also a het on low side of 1540, was 1khz
low, now 2.5khz low.

In the middle of this is
1530. My suspicion is WCKY is putting out spikes on either
side of it's carrier.

Anyone else picking these up?
Doubt this is the Saudi, loop bearing is slightly SE - in direction
of Cincinnatti.

I'm hearing a pretty strong het about 900 Hz high, so it's likely the same
one that you and George Sherman are hearing. When I attempt to null WWKB,
the het drops too, so maybe in roughly the same direction (SW of me). The
Saudi is in there too - I was getting some audio from them earlier.

I have a tone - very weak - on my sw wire on 1590. Anyone else hearing this?
upposedly WZRX MS has been doing this due to an automation glitch.
I am still working on 1510. Going to try my west wire to see if the sports

[IRCA] Christchurch Radio Services Status

2011-02-28 Thread Geralyn Hollerman
For anyone interested:
---
Christchurch [New Zealand]
Earthquake
Radio Services Status 2
__

Access to the CBD radio studios of many Christchurch radio
broadcasters continues to be denied by the civil defence authorities
a week after the devasting earthquake hit this New Zealand city of
350,000.

Radio New Zealand, The Radio Network and Radioworks all have studios
within the cordoned off zone and engineers are still working through
city buildings to determine whether they are safe for temporary or
permanent access and use.

NewstalkZB is now carrying its news coverage across 1017,1098 and
1503 AM and 106.5 AM [replacing Hauraki Amp'd], RDU 98.5 has returned
to the air from temporary studios whilst Tahu 90.5 now refers to
Christchurch as Quake City and has been heard carrying iwi network
programs.

Local community access Plains FM has studios at the Christchurch
Polytech campus and is now using its transmitter to broadcast the BBC
World Service from London as an emergency measure.

Radio Ferrymead 1413AM in the badly hit Ferrymead area was silent
during its usual weekend schedule, and destroyed or damaged local
LPFM stations now include One-Eyed FM [Aranui], Beachbreak FM [South
New Brighton] and The Wave [Sumner].

Power Hits Radio 87.8 in St Albans and Akaroa FM have both been
carrying earthquake coverage from the emergency nationwide local
network anchored by Classic Gold FM in Invercargill in association
with Splash FM on Waiheke Island.

The status of new community station Compass FM 104.9 FM in Rangiora
is unclear, it had been testing recently and its studios and
facilities are available but don't appear to be utilised at present
for some reason.

A full listing of Christchurch area AM and FM stations is online at
www.radioheritage.com and is regularly being updated. It's at the
home page under the header 'Christchurch Earthquake 2011'.

[IRCA] Kenwood R-5000 vs. Drake SW-8: Image rejection, sensitivity, and selectivity factors

2011-02-28 Thread Rick Dau
As you can probably surmise by the subject line, I'm doing some comparison
shopping.  My 2010 is dying (it's practically useless on LW and SW now, and
it's
always been so on FM), and I've narrowed my preference for my next set-up to
two
options:

a) the Kenwood R-5000 + an FM tuner to be named later

b) the Drake SW-8

Would like to find out from people who own either of these receivers how they
perform, and I'm especially interested in how the SW-8 does on the FM side (if
I'd be better off with a tuner, I'll go that route, but I would be quite happy
if I could get a LW/MW/SW desktop that also has exceptional FM reception so
that
I don't have to pony up more $$$ for something that'll take up more space).
And
as far the the image rejection, the sensitivity, and the selectivity go, I want
to know how both radios do in these areas on ALL bands.

[IRCA] Two more new catches from Burnt River ON

2011-02-28 Thread Saul DX
Add 1490 Alexandria MN to my list. Ad for Glacial lakes Docks at 424-1231
checks, as does the home and garden show happening there this weekend. And a
separate mention of Alexandria. At 813 miles it's the farthest I've had to
the west on a graveyarder.

Also 1340 WJYI Milwaukee with the end of Turning Point with David Jeremiah.

Subject: [NRC-AM] DX update from the bat-cave at Burnt River ON

Heard KKOW 860 KS with tornado warnings and other bad weather ancts last
night per tip on a couple lists. Common here when cx are good or when
station is on day power, which it obviously was given the situation.

This morning was superb in the two hours after sunrise. 1450 Fond du Lac
WI

KFIZ is becoming a proverbial pest, and was in for much of two hours
post-sunrise. 1490 the same with Duluth MN, in solidly the various times I
checked 1490 from before 0800 to 1000 EST. Your home for the wild...the
Fan
1490..." May also have had Alexandria MN there, have some tape listening
to

do, and web research.

WOBT Rhinelander WI on 1240 with ESPN. Winona MN KWNO 1230. The Talk of
Winona. 1450 KFIZ gave way briefly to Marshfield, and and ID which I
recall
was KVLB, though I need to recheck the NRC log as I forgot to write down
the

calls. It's taped, anyhow.

That's four new, plus a bunch of ads I have yet to check on Google, and
also

some more possible taped IDs - or what sounded like IDs, for some maybe
additional stations. Graveyarders are fun to work when cx are good. I've
had

pretty well all the regional stations for WI and the easy-moderate catches
from MN. Actually, when I am working a channel like 1420, I want an
eastern

time zone time-check, not a central one, as I've had MN IA and WI there
(KTOE Mankato is a pest there), but still need the two closer-in ones from
MI.

Would have had even more, but when I went to put out the garbage, I left
the

door open for a minute and a bat flew in. That surprised me, that it'd be
flying around outside with sub-freezing temps and during daylight. Anyhow
I
stunned it with a broom and put it back where it belongs. (Happily for
both

of us, it survived its ordeal).
