[IRCA] 5-letter call signs

2011-04-03 Thread Rick Dau
I can think of three right off the bat...

XEROK-800  (which everyone within 500 miles of Juarez should be able to get on
his/her fillings)

XEBJB-570  (logged years ago, but I think it's no longer on the air)
XEABC-760  (which I'm still trying for, but XEES keeps getting in the way!)

[IRCA] Breaking in a new MW Receiver

Thanks for that info Colin. I have been looking for a small HF transceiver
with good MW performance, but there isn't much in depth info on the hams
forums. The 703+ is also a nice looking rig. Jim - WA1EDN

As it turns out, with a Wellbrook ALA100M, it rocks on medium
wave - two bandwidths, band pass tuning, DSP noise reduction
Auto-Het elimination...

Bought it as a 10W All-band all-mode transceiver but the

Re: [IRCA] 5-letter call signs

2011-04-03 Thread Stephen Airy
There's also a bunch of 6-letter calls in Mexico.  I was compiling a list, but
my browser crashed and didn't save the message, I've now hit my daily
radio-locator limit (and using hidemyass.com as a proxy doesn't work for them -
won't submit the query - any other free proxy sites i should try?), I'm too
lazy to use my android phone (was a bit of work to figure out on google maps
where to center the searches, anyway), and the FCC query last I checked a few
hours ago was down.
Anyhow, I do know that my local 540 is XESURF, and I also see a listing for
XEABCA on 820 in Mexicali (as well as a XEVMS, so I'm not sure which it's
supposed to be).
I've noticed, too, that many Mexicans have a number appended on the end of the
callsign.  Most often it's a 1, although there are a bunch of XENVA2s in the
FCC database, and there are several that are XE and 4 numbers.  Also I saw at
least one on 610 (forget the exact call) that began with XH.
Last but not least, I didn't find XEKK when I was searching, but I did find
XESHT1. ;)

Re: [IRCA] KSAZ test

2011-04-03 Thread Stephen Airy
I hope to be able to try for them. :)
Last summer when I took a mini midday DXpedition to Cameron Corners, CA, I was
able to get KSAZ at noon in August.  It was faint, but there, when using the
Tecsun PL-380 and Select-A-Tenna.  I'd post a recording, but I just found out
(checked a few of my earlier messages) that my attempts to turn some text into
a link isn't working here. :(  I really don't want to post a link that's
upwards of 240-300 characters long, AND I don't feel like wasting a tinyurl (I
almost always customize the link to better reflect what it is) on it, either.
Any suggestions?

This is from Paul Lotsof, Tucson AZ

The KSAZ test is now set for the morning of April 24 between midnight at
3 a.m.  Tucson time which is the same as PDT.
(0300-0600 EDT)
The station is known as Radio Ebineezer and programs religion in Spanish
with 5 kw non-directional on 580 khz.   Engineer Frank Luna is
unwilling/unable to disturb the programming with any kind of tones or
code so you take what you can get.   I believe there are English IDs
on the hour.    They transmit from an array just west of I-10
about 15 miles NW of Tucson.

Very likely if anyone thinks he has the station, they can phone me and I
can confirm it by playing it into the telephone.   520-290-9797.

Please send this to the people who can publicize DX tests.

Here in the NW, we may have a fighting chance to log KSAZ this time

I will do an intensive review and write up on the 703+

The specs state that the sensitivity of the 703+ is reduced
from 0 - 1600khz from the .6uv capabilities from 1.8 to 60 mhz

Probably a good thing.

I bought mine mint for $350 so that is a whole lot of receiver and transmit
for the dollar.

Signals overall seem about equal with the Drake R8 - which we all know is a
solid receiver.

WKY 930 is still there with Spanish 24/7, mostly
música méxicana. When I was a teenager, it was the
#1 top 40 station in the Oklahoma City market. It
had a better nighttime signal and more popular DJ
than KOMA.

One of KOMA's DJ in the mid-60's was John Ravencroft.
He is best known as John Peel of the BBC.

KOMA's most popular DJ was probably Dale Wehba, who'd
left WKY for the job. Another, was Johnny Dark.

One of WKY's former DJs, the ever popular Ronnie
Kaye, can still be heard at mid-day on KOMA-FM.
Today, it's the only decent oldies station in the OKC
market.

Good DX.

Hi Colin,

Indeed, the IC-703+ is very nice for MW in a compact package!

I owned the newer IC-7000 for a while and it is hot on MW. The IF-DSP
filtering and PBT is great, and found the noise reduction feature very
effective.

Have you seen Bjarne Mjelde's review of the IC-703 from a MW DXing

He has also reviewed the IC-7000, which you can find here: *

Just for reference, 404 is the internet code for what you are looking for
does not exist. If you need something before FCC is available again, try:

I rarely use FCC because it is so cumbersome.

2011-04-03 Thread Rick Dau
That's exactly why I don't use it, either.  For example, if I am looking for
information regarding a station's sunrise and sunset times (for sign-ons,
sign-offs, and daytime/nighttime pattern changes) for each month, I go with...

MUCH easier to use than trying to look them up on www.fcc.gov.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Getting to the bottom of 1710

2011-04-03 Thread David Crawford

Working down your list, sir...

Have never confirmed that Top Inter is actually on the air; I asked Connelly since he's local, but was ignored, in keeping with
NRC oligarchical tradition. It seems unlikely that it is actually on, given Soleil on the same channel, and I've never seen an
actual log of it that confirmed it was Top Inter and not Soleil.

Will check my peninsular comrades with respect to Dade City. Note that there
are two list entries for the same location.

Lubavitscher (thus nicknamed by virtue of being run by Chabad Lubavitsch sect) used to be easily heard down here but not for a
few years, far stronger than anything heard there now.

Fenique/Summum was publicized but never confirmed on the air at any of their alleged tx sites. When Lakay showed up, we first
thought it was this but it was determined otherwise. All details about this one were derived solely from their website.

Lakay is off, was audible here daytimes even but didn't last more than a few weeks, last log being 15 April 2008. I DF'd that
one to Winter Haven myself.

Soleil is confirmed active, 1709.983, tends to be the second strongest station
on channel here, but generally buried by Celestial.

Will inquire regionally re. KONK also. I thought that was on 1630 (see entry
on link below).

Celestial is the dominant 1710 station here, 1710.026 typically.

Big Q has been known to make it into our area during its sporadic appearances, though I have yet to hear it myself since I'm
rarely DXing at 0300 local.

Most of these stations are somewhat off-freq but generally stable. Characterization of their freqs down to the Hz would be
useful for IDing when signal strength doesn't support aural identification.

This site has some Floridian 1710 references:
https://sites.google.com/site/floridadxn/florida-low-power-radio-stations
Terry isn't good about closure on the station entries however, i.e. recording then they disappear, so they don't necessarily
still exist simply because an entry doesn't say they pulled the plug.

Note the one entry about the WOCL/WKTK relay there; that's our biggest
regional mystery, but it shows up very rarely.

Undercover Radio (SW pirate) has used 1710 on occasion, audible here.

If you plan to do so, it would be great to have a 1710 list online that is actually up-to-date and relies on something besides
others' old web postings as information sources. You'd have my enthusiastic support with my own observations.
