I caught a nice Morse code ID followed by rapid sweeps just before 0203 EST.
This was good timing, as hugely dominant CHIN went from news to music soon
thereafter, and effectively drowned out everything else for the remainder of
the half hour.

Thanks for repeating the test, since I missed last year's due to travels.
Nice to end the year with a new catch, as they've been few and far between

[IRCA] WRTH 2012

2011-12-31 Thread Pete Taylor
I ordered it from Amazon Dec. 14; a response indicated I would get it by Dec.
24. A subsequent E-mail notified me that there was a shipping delay and that it
would not go out until February. Another E-mail after Christmas said it was now
on the way. It arrived yesterday (12/30). Base cost was $22.40 which grew to
$28.64 after shipping and WA tax.

Happy New Year everybody and a special thanks to Wayne Heinen for the AM log,
Bruce Portzer for the PAL, Phil Bytheway for the TIS log, Kevin Carey for the
beacon log, Jim Thomas for the Central American/ Caribbean FM log, Scott Fybush
for the annual tower calendar, and all others who contribute meaningfully to
our hobby by compiling lists or simply reporting what they are hearing
(especially helpful when they include their DX location). Here's to a hot and

That wouldn't be a total surprise given the strength that CHIN has been heard
from time to time in the past. For last years test they were in slugging it out
with KXEL.

2011-12-31 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Tried out here in distant NW B.C. on Haida Gwaii. I taped the 30 minutes
and listened mostly half asleep live, and didn't hear anything for certain.
KXEL was definitely the dominant station, although I also had Seattle and
a CA station weakly as well. If anyone has exact times of various
code/test tones, etc, I'd love to know so that I can compare my tape, just
in case something was there. Thanks for the test! 73 and Happy New

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Asian language station on 1540 KHz?

2011-12-31 Thread Earl Higgins
Good to see you here Les. I don't know if anyone has answered, but your Asian
on 1540 could either be CHIN Toronto

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHIN_(AM)

Or KGBC Galveston

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KGBC

The Toronto station is independent and multilingual (including non-Asian
languages), the Galveston station is CRI (100% Chinese government controlled
programming). I believe both stations have webstreams, so the next time you run
into this you should be able to figure out which one it is, if you are near a
computer. Both have been heard here in St. Louis Missouri, with the Toronto
station being downright regular.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

I haven't done any serious AM DXing in quite some time, so I was trying
to become familiar with the regulars on 1540 KHz this evening. Around
7 PM Central time, I did
some listening from my car, and noticed a very loud Asian language
station. I don't recall logging this format on the frequency in the past.

Listening now at 11:30 PM, I don't hear a trace of them. Any idea who
this station is?

73 Good Luck to all with the test,

Les Rayburn, N1LF

[IRCA] Last nights WKVQ test.

2011-12-31 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Unlike everyone else out west, I did hear one very small portion of last nights
test. At 00:02:50 I heard an ID in morse followed by what can only be described
as a whoop whoop sound. Listened to the whole half hour and never heard any
more, and what I did hear was only made possible because someone very kindly
mentioned the times of when they had heard the morse IDs. Without this prior
knowledge I don't think I would have heard it. I guess this makes up for me not
hearing the previous test. Heard with my Perseus using my east/west beverage.

Many thanks to Craig Baker, Jim Chenard and Saul Chernos for making this
possible.

At 0230 ELT, I heard two very distinct bits of programming from ESPN Radio
under KXEL and mixing with WKVQ, including IDs and sounders as such.  I'd love
to think this was Cleveland, but maybe someone else on the frequency has added
ESPN Radio in recent months.
