Tried for 580 WHP had KMJ Fresno completely nulled but just my luck loud static curtis in vacaville California Kiwa loop sony icf 2010 possibly may have had a chance to possibly hear them but due to loud static nothing was heard. 1460 also had loud static and iboc from 1470 from radio disney sacramento possibly would have heard them also but iboc sucks and i would just have to have loud static the night of the tests. [IRCA] Other 1550s
This morning (Monday 2-27) I heard WUTQ Utica - 1550 AM 95.5 FM with potent signal from 0500 - 0600 Eastern. They must be on one kilowatt full day power - not 3 watts night power. Format is you-know-every-word pop hit oldies. During the night of the DX test, I heard a station in Spanish with a traditional music format. Lots of tubas and accordions. Never got an ID but in there pretty well. I did not hear the Morse or other material from the DX test. CBE Windsor was just too strong. The good old days are gone. My strongest CBCs are now 6160 and 9625 on HF. Re: [IRCA] WTKT
I wasn't having any luck with them either at the announced times (12:15 am, 12:45, 1:15, etc.) but stumbled on a clear ID and announcement with morse code at 3:39 am. I also heard faint code at 2:48 under a jumble of other stations. Not many people seemed to have reported hearing them, so if you have recordings you might want to check those two times. [IRCA] WHP-580, WTKT-1460 DX tests
WHP-580 presumed with tone and possible code ID at 0005 EST. Creamed by CKWW. WTKT-1460: code WTKT (.-- - -.- -) ID at 0046, under dreadful Canadian oldies on CJOY groundwave, Catholic ETWN fire brimstone on WHIC Rochester NY, and UNID SS, presumably WKDV Manassas, VA. Neither were heard very well, but they weren't needed anyway. WTKT QSLed as WCMB in 1977. I think I also have a WHP verie from the 1980s. If there is a DX contest for logging state capitals and/or three-letter calls, give yourself some extra points! I didn't try for KPRI-1550 test, believing my slim odds of hearing them over downtown Toronto noise and CHIN-1540 slop wouldn't justify staying up until 0400 EST. But if they were heard in London, ON and even in Newfoundland on the same Sony prison ultralight that I have, I might have had a puncher's chance. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] 1460 Solid Gospel + Monday Morning DX Tests Bombed
Thanks for those who arranged the tests but nada, here in Indy. Tried for 580 but no code @ 0033 est. Tried 1460 @ 0045 and got more of the same. After trying for WTKT, I rotated the e-100 and heard Southern Gospel mx. The program was part of Solid Gospel with solidgospel.com given over and over and a National ad @ 0049. The my weekend luck has been going, there was NO TOH ID (of course) and right into SRN news. Without even checking a list or logbook, I guessed that the station must be from KY or TN. Well only two stations fit, WEEN TN or WRKB NC. I know that some have stated that you can't be too sure of direction finding on a radio but the signal just would not fit NC. Did anyone else catch this last night while trying for WTKT? I'm 100% sure of WEEN but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks! t1460 WEEN TN Lafayette 2-27 0050 Southern GOS mx and Solid Gospel and southerngospel.com mentions. No TOH ID. Good @ times. No sign of WTKT DX Test. Re: [IRCA] Other 1550's
Your SS with tubas and such MUST be WDLR-OH. They are the bain of many a-DXer. They are supposed to be 29 watts @ night but must be the full 500. They have done this for a while ;). I will say that they have changed SOMETHING. I used to hear them every night but no longer. Their day and night patterns are similar (null to the NNW) but not completely identical, so I wonder if they had been ND for awhile, with just one stick? At any rate, they still got out TOO good, based on reports that I read, from Sunday morning's KRPI test. 73 Dave in Indy ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

A later email said he got the OK to go Non-D, so I assume that's what he did. The indices were up so that may have been a contributing factor, or there may have been a technical hitch and they did not go Non-D. I'm waiting to hear back from him regarding how things went on his end. I think the fact that he tested several times through the early morning hours - albeit for short duration - was the best we could hope for. Hello To All, Decent propagation to start the evening until a solar disturbance began it's effects. With the solar K index at 4 later on , propagation here favored stations from across the Atlantic and to the south. Western signals were pretty well non-existent for the most part. [IRCA] WHP Test Heard in Ottawa
It may not sound like much to hear them from a mere 354 miles away, but read on... WTKT is unneeded here, so I focused on the other test. However, I have a severe impediment on 580: my local blowtorch CFRA (10 kW directional right at me from 11 miles away, and I have a strong suspicion that they actually leave their 50 kW day power on all night). I spent some time getting the best phase-null I could on them, and then left things set up for overnight recording. Starting to check the recordings today, it looked encouraging... from the beginning, CKWW was audible under CFRA, and I even caught a voice ID from them (relog). This was a great sign, since CKWW is bit further away than WHP, and is only 500 W (though directional towards me). If WHP was 5 kW non- directional, I would surely hear them too. But at 0005-0006, absolutely no sign of them. On to the next test interval, and the next, and the next after that... same result. I certainly agree with those who suggest that WHP was staying on their night pattern for the test. But wait! Running out of hope, I got to the 0405 test interval... and, lo and behold, Morse code popped up under CFRA, clear as a bell: WHP 580 KHZ HARRISBURG, PA. W00t! So, it appears that WHP went non-D just for that last short period. If you didn't hear them, and you have a recording that covers 0405-0406 EST, make sure you check it! WHP is a new logging here (and a three-letter call to boot... bonus!). Thanks to all who organized the test. And I'm with Bill Dvorak on this one, either cx to the east last night were a dud, or WHP had to have been on night pattern. Surely 5 kw on ND from central Pennsylvania would've made it this far. WHP heard very weakly with Morse code 2/27 at 0005:30 EST well under WTAG and CFRA. [IRCA] Post-DX Test report from David Harris at KRPI
Please share this with anyone who may be interested. Also, please note David's request for an SASE if you would like to receive a QSL card for the DX Test. From David: In late January, 2012 KRPI, AM 1550, was contacted by Jim Pogue from the IRCA/NRC Broadcast Test Committee asking if the station would consider conducting a DX test. My immediate reaction was YES! The management had no objections so the date was set. Our live broadcasting ends at midnight when we switch to pre-recorded programming, so it was easy to set up for the test. I made a recording of a brief announcement identifying the station and alerting listeners that a test was in progress until 1:30 AM PST and that normal programming would resume at that time. A microcontroller was programmed to send Morse code at about 10 WPM. The message was VVV VVV VVV de KRPI KRPI KRPI at 1000 Hz followed by the same sequence at 1500 Hz. Finally, an iPod was loaded with old time fiddle tunes. About 5 minutes before the test was scheduled we switched to day power and pattern (50kW). At 1:00 AM the voice recording was played, followed by the Morse code segment, followed by a musical selection. That pattern was repeated every five minutes or so for the next half hour. At least once the musical selection was East Indian instead of a fiddle tune. In the middle of things I received a call from a listener in California - I would have loved to chat, but I had to be a bit abrupt since I had my hands full. After the test ended I received another call from a listener in Nashville and had a nice conversation. So far I have heard directly from listeners in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Manitoba, Ontario, and Japan. We often receive reports from the AM DX enthusiasts on vacation in Lapland with their extraordinary long wire antennas and NRD receivers but we rarely hear from domestic DXers. This has been an exciting experience for me and it has been my pleasure to participate in this DX test. All verified reports accompanied by a SASE will receive our QSL card which will fit into an ordinary business envelope. Re: [IRCA] WHP/WTKT not heard in Omaha
KFBK does have the highest RMS field at 1 km (and unless I'm calculating wrong it seems KSTP, which has a similar-type antenna, has the highest RfccMS field at 1 km for 1 kW of applied input power. BTW KFBK's RMS field is actually 3126.79 mV/m @ 1 km nighttime, 3545.89 mV/m @ 1 km daytime, and KSTP is 511.77 mV/m @ 1 km @ 1 kW daytime (non-directional - nighttime they run directional from a different site that does not use Franklins). All that is moot, though, with the high groundwave losses at that end of the band, even though Sacramento and surrounding area does have good ground conductivity. (I think part of it is 15 or 30 on the map.) I have heard KFBK at noon in El Cajon, CA, but that was near-winter-solstice daytime skywave. Ok so this isn't 450 miles... but how's this - http://www.mediafire.com/?fjne6cs5z524zu2 - for 16.4 watts ERP (actually 5 kW, but in a deep null) at 181 miles, using only a small radio's (SRF-59, then PL-606) built-in ferrite loopstick at 1:45pm PST (although it was on Dec 23)? (There is a little competition from co-channel XECL off the back side of the loopstic's pattern.) With efficiency like that, I wonder how far 50kW on 540 kHz (or 2 MW on 153 kHz) with a Franklin antenna would go before the signal is undetectable even on a beverage? [IRCA] WHP test heard well in Central Pennsylvania
Not surprisingly, I was able to hear all the announcements for the 580 WHP test. The best signal was during the 4:05am segment although voice and code made it through the other times, too. I'm about 75 miles NW of the station and can normally hear them well during the day, not so well at night. Rick, Agreed! My dx from NW Iowa always found KFYR with a good daytime signal, year round. Concordia KS would be under them but KFYR was a solid signal. From California I was always impressed with being able to hear KUZZ-800-Bakersfield with 250 D daytime. This from West Sacramento CA. KFI 640 LA would have a weak signal audible daytimes also. Chicago stations-WMAQ-670, WGN-720 WBBM-780 were also heard all day long. Nearly 500 miles for their 50 kw. The latter was easily heard under WJAG Norfolk NE. KSTP at night uses 3 tripod like towers that are specially geared for optimal skywave. These towers are the original built back in the early history of KSTP. When I was in Grand Island, NE back in the 80's, I remember that at night, KSTP had a local signal, stronger than KRGI, that did not hardly fade. Of course that's right in the middle of their main lobe. I was 5 miles WNW of KRGI. They were easily nulled at night. [IRCA] Bandscan Anomaly
01/27/12--1800 to 1930 PST--Victoria BC. A quick bandscan revealed zero skip at 6PM PST on freqs from 540 to 1000 Khz while skip on freqs from 1000 to 1700 was normal or above pre LSS and post LSS. LSS today was 5:56 PM PST. In the lower end of the band all of the high all of the high powers on the clears were totally absent or near zero. Even KGO SF was faint at this time. Through the hour as the sky got dark the lower band was still almost dead with the odd signal beginning to appear on the higher freqs in the bottom half of the band. At 7PM 540 still had no signal. At 730 a faint signal from Sk is struggling to appear. After 7PM the clears were slowly catching up to their normal signal strength. At the upper end things were different and better than normal. Portland stations and others at that distance were booming at 6PM already. The Californians were good and most notable was XEPE 1700 in Tijuana Mex with a day signal readable until 6:11 when it disappeared but returned 5 minutes later presumably on night power slowly regaining its previous signal strength. 1310 brought in a super strong signal briefly from possibly either KIQQ Barstow Ca or some other unID with SS . I wonder what caused this abnormal anomaly tonight. It's a bit of a mystery to me that Jim Renfrew only just saw it tonight for the first time. Stuck in the ether for almost 48 hours.
