[IRCA] OT Veteran Rock DJ Pat O'Day, KJR Seattle

2013-06-22 Thread Patrick Martin
I just heard that Veteran DJ Pat ODay will not be announcing the Hydro
races this year. He has done them for the past 46 years. I was surprised
to hear the news, but he was born in 1934. The years go by. He claims to
be in good health though. It has been years since I have seen him. I
think the last time was at KYYX 96.5 in the 80s, after the station
changed from KYAC FM.

Re: [IRCA] Ultralight Cliffhanger DU-DXpeditions

2013-06-22 Thread d1028gary

Brian,

If you are interested in seeing the actual scenery and ocean views from these
two Highway 101 sheer ocean cliffs in Oregon,, a couple of on-site DXpedition
videos were taken during last summer's Ultralight DU-chasing trips. The July
2012 (Cape Perpetua) video is posted at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZzBfstOXA4 , and the August 2012 (Rockwork 4)
video is posted at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=filugExDz7E . The Rockwork
4 DXpedition video includes a straight down shot from the DXing site to the
rugged ocean rocks 400 feet (122 meters) directly below-- not recommended for
acrophobics.

Hi Gary.

I will be spending one night in Newport and one night in Coos Bay during the
week preceding the first DXpedition so I would like to see the sites and
hopefully do some DXing there.

Rockwork 4 is located about 10 miles south of Cannon Beach, OR, and
has a 400' sheer drop off to the Pacific Ocean directly below the DXing site.

On the east side of the road in Oswald West State Park there is a large parking
lot. About 1 mile south of that and about 2 miles north of Manzania on the west
side of 101 I see three smaller cliff-side parking lots. Is one of those the
Canon Beach site?

Cape Perpetua is located 2 miles south of Yachats, OR, and its turnoff
site has the additional thrill of being directly in the headlights of
18-wheel trucks before they make their final turn on Highway 101.

Where is that in relation to the entrance to the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center?

Hi Pat,
KIRO-FM in Seattle will have a one-hour show hosted by Pat O'Day during the
Seafair weekend.
so he'll still be linked to the hydro races in some way.
This was arranged after the announcement that he would no longer be part of
the TV team.

I am cliffside -- right on top of the water!

Going to give the coffee farmer who received my FSL antenna
(and will be shipping it back) an opportunity to use the FSL for
a few weeks up above Keleakekua Bay to see what he can get.

Sadly I am no motivated enough (or brave enough) to take the FSL

especially at sunrise. I think eyes would be a bit more suspicious
here than in Oregon.

Re: [IRCA] Ultralight Cliffhanger DU-DXpeditions

2013-06-22 Thread Brian Chapel

Many thanks Guy and Gary for the detailed instructions.

I've saved the map locations in my Google account and added them to my
GPS receiver so I should be all set. I have never heard a DU and only
logged a few TPs so there is no need for anyone to worry about me using
up all the DX. My only equipment will be an Eton E1, some wire, and my
humble RF Plus Quantum Loop. My car is very small so the Wellbrook loops
will have to stay home attached to the fence.

Re: [IRCA] TP 22 Jun; Victoria version

2013-06-22 Thread todftscytj7707
Colin,
Unless you stumble into a growing field, only cops will care lol. Even then
they would be fascinated or unintetested.
I would be curious tho if you would be able to get to the north side and see
how different cx would be. Stateside should be very different as opposed to
where you are cliff dxing now. Bear in mind that tou have Mauna Kea and Waimea
blocking any effective water/sky paths.
But then again it was a tough time for me when I was in Hawaii last to get
motivated to DX during the two weeks I was there. Once I got that taste of
cliff dxing it's like a new excitement and dimension came upon me.

I am cliffside -- right on top of the water!

Going to give the coffee farmer who received my FSL antenna
(and will be shipping it back) an opportunity to use the FSL for
a few weeks up above Keleakekua Bay to see what he can get.

Sadly I am no motivated enough (or brave enough) to take the FSL
out into the public in Hawaii and cruise some of the back roads...
especially at sunrise. I think eyes would be a bit more suspicious
here than in Oregon.

 Hi Colin,

Were you able to do any cliffside DXing as Todd suggested in an earlier

 Welcome to Kona --
I might try one more morning -- complete bust here - like the Pacific

 a
 hint.

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed
