[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-18

2013-09-18 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Asian TP's were rebounding here this morning with better signals and variety
than yesterday, but there still weren't very many second-tier stations showing
up. The big guns on 594, 693, 747, 774, 828, 972, 1134 and 1566 had no trouble
reaching vibrant audio during peak sunrise enhancement (around 1330), and
738-BEL2 in Taiwan joined in the fun with a fairly potent signal around 1325.
558-HLQH and 603-HLSA managed good signals at times, with 603 being an
all-Korean frequency until China showed up very late in the session.

A determined check for audio on some second-tier frequencies produced weak
Chinese music on 1017-CRI around 1338, and weak Chinese speech on 1035-CNR1
about the same time. During 738-Taiwan's vibrant peak at 1325 a check was made
on 1143-Taiwan, but it was a dud at the time. Many of the Chinese middle band
stations that normally manage good signals this time of year (1017, 1035 and
1044) have been notable underperformers here this September, with very feeble
audio at best. Like Nick has said, except for the big guns almost all of the
good TP performers this month have been on the low band, with 603-HLSA,
639-CNR1, 648-VOR and 738-Taiwan being the standouts here. In summary, the
Asians were fairly interesting this morning, and hopefully on an upward trend.

603 HLSA Namyang, S. Korea Interval music and Korean male
speech after 1300 TOH; no fight with 603-China at the time

male speech and interval music during variety program at 1325

From September 14 at 1317; Huge signal from 639-CNR1 (China Synchros)--
best signal here since 2011 (heterodyne removed :-)

[IRCA] To vacuum tubes lovers

2013-09-18 Thread Sylvain Naud
Inspired by this WLW's interesting videopointed out from the Topband
list by Nick Hall-Patch,I was remembering about the following I had
bookmarked for a while:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3wrzo_fabrication-d-une-lampe-triode_tech

Fabrication d'une lampe triode (The making of a triode). For vacuum
tubes nostalgicor just for plain curiosity, it surely worth taking time
to watch it all (17min)despite a couple of annoying ads...

Now, how much would cost that piece of art?

[IRCA] TP DX for 19 Sept

2013-09-18 Thread Bruce Portzer
Conditions were slightly better than yesterday, but most of the Asians
were still weaker than they were a few days ago. The exceptions were
the CRI Russian service outlets on 963 and 1323, which were much better
than normal. 963 was surprisingly good at times today.

Several Alaskans were noted: KYUK made its first appearance of the
season, and KNOM was nicely atop KKOH.

The upper end of the dial is still signally challenged; even 1566 was
struggling today, although that was due in part to electrical noise.
Despite Nick and Gary's successes, I still can't hear squat on 603, even
though it's a wide open channel.

Good Audio, if ever so briefly
747JOIB CC lesson 1332
750KFQD dominant w/local news stories 1327, 103.7 KFQD IDs
774JOUB, 1320 local ID start of EE lesson
780KNOM in Nome, it's 5 o'clock 1300 way atop KKOH
963CRI, woman in RR 1334, as strong as 960 domestics
972KBS, KK conversation 1326
981CNR1 briefly good 1328, otherwise mostly buried in CKNW splatter

FAir Audio, maybe a few words would have been understandable
594JOAK male talk 1313
640KYUK, legal ID 1300, then NPR news
670KDLG, legal ID 1300, then BBC News u/KBOI
693JOAB weather in JJ 1314
850KICY, legal ID by woman, then religious pgm mixing w/KHHO
890KBBI (presumed), BBCWS to 1258, inst mx, then Democracy Now pgm
u/CJDC, no ID noted

1017CRI, good carrier, shallow modulation MW in KK 1326
1053jammer
1206Yanbian, KK talk briefly audible 1326 on 1205.95
1323CRI, woman in RR //963 but not as strong, 1336
1566HLAZ, woman in JJ, then hymn 1321

Poor Audio
729talk 1321, probably JOCK
738CC talk 1325
756CNR1, faint CC talk 2-tone time signal 1330
819DPRK, a few syllables in KGNW splat
828 bits of talk 1330
1035CNR1, BoH time tones 1330, mw in faint CC 1331
1134JJ or KK talk vocal mx 1318, lots of CKWX splat
1170Korea, 3+1 pips, theme mx, KBS World Radio ID very faint
behind KPUG

1287JOHR, JJ talk 1336
1575bits of talk 1320

[IRCA] TP 18 Sep; Victoria version

2013-09-18 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
An interesting morning, though nothing too earth shattering. A
number of signals got to good strength including (briefly) apparent CRI 1017

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

279 R. Rossii. ballad //189 1318UT
594 JOAK man in JJ 1338UT
774 JOUB EE lessons 1324UT
972 HLCA KK 1256UT and various other times
1566 HLAZ woman in JJ 1343UT doing s/off of JJ program, mentions of
FEBC, Nihongo (Japanese language), HLAZ, frequency etc.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

747 JOIK EE lessons 1320UT, after NHK ID; possibly 828 got to this
level also, just didn't note it down; too easy

963 CRI presumed woman in RR 1319UT
1017 CRI presumed, man in KK, then woman 1329UT
1053 KK jammer 1325UT
1206 Yanbian man in KK 1320UT, off channel as usual
1287 JOHR assumed, man in JJ 1323UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

153 R. Rossii. woman in RR //279 1303UT
189 R. Rossii. woman in RR 1303UT //279
837 JOQK woman in JJ //594 1334UT
1116 4BC likely, man in DU EE 1349UT
1323 CRI woman in RR //963 which was stronger at 1328UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

603 HLSA? Quiet voiced man 1322UT, easy listening mx 1326UT
639 CNR1 woman talking //6030 1301UT
864 JJ sounding man 1341UT
954 woman talking, lots of 950 splash, 1310UT; JOKR?
981 CNR1 man talking in splash, seemed //6030, 1325UT
891 JOHK man in JJ //594 1323UT
1314 unID. pop mx 1333UT
1476 unID. man singing, briefly at this level 1346UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

558 702 (hum) 738 756 918 936 945 1035 1134 1143 1242 1251

best wishes,

Nick
